Correct, these are Humboldt squid. Another common name is "jumbo" squid, but lately all the CA reports are calling them "giant."

They're pretty big. I mean, six-foot squid that are aggressive and unpredictable, you don't want to fool with that. But Dosidicus gigas, the Humboldt, is nothing like the size of an architeuthis (the original giant) or a colossal squid. Those are almost an order of magnitude bigger: 30-60 feet long, as opposed to maybe six.

They are humbolt squid. And squid are not like octopus. They have hooks on their tentacles and they are very aggressive and they hunt in packs but even a single one will bite you. They have been known to eat humans and they are intelligent....I would rather swim through a pack of reef sharks than a pack of humbolt squid.
