How do you get it to autofocus while in video mode? Do you have to press the shutter to get it to re-focus? Please let me know if you can! I can't find the info anywhere!
I just shot a short film using the canon equiv - which is better - but I am a Nikon man through and through and can't tear myself away from that - but anyway we recorded the sound onto Minidisc away from the camera (as you should) and got marvellous results - Even I was impressed and I ususally shoot on Red with Digi Primes - the differences are getting smaller all the time - and you can go much wider and longer with these cameras for much less too !!
Agreed, we use a 4 track hard disc recorder and the results make the sound guy very happy, he has discreet tracks for dialogue and atmos that he can work with, although interstingly the last shoot we did, the onboard mic actually captured some usefull dialogue when the talent wasn't near the main mic, , so I am going to get a small onboard mic, like the Rode VideoMic to make sure that even the cameras audio is at least marginally useable.
Keep in mind this is only when using the onboard mic which you would NEVER use for production. If you patch a mic into the camera with a minijack cable then you wont get the autofocus noise. That being said it takes so long to get a lock using contrast AF that I think you will still always focus manually anyway.
1. because I have an external recorder that attaches to the top of my d90 that I use for movies
and it would be SO much easier to just plug in a little cord and record, without having to sync it all together on the computer, which takes so unbelievably long
And i was excited when I heard it has autofocus. but not if its gonna be as annoying as that :(
