It really sucked for the wounded in Stalingrad. At the worse of their fortunes, the only choice for the Russians was to attempt to transport their wounded to the eastern bank under constant German artillery and machine gun fire. Barges full with wounded were literally blown out of the water. Later, when it got bad for the germans, people died from lack of medical care due to lack of supplies and personnel, many freezing to death later on when it snowed.
