I had a spare Sterling upper that I shortened including custom made shortened heat treated piston rod, a modified GG&G CAR front grip assy with a vertical grip and a custom muzzle break. The cost in labor doing the work plus parts is not feasible for me to do for anyone else. This gun is now one of a kind unless somebody has duplicated what I've done.
I was getting some whicked key holing in semi yesterday. Never noticed it before cus this was the first time I had actualy shot it in semi off a bench at paper and not auto at some poor container or car!... I was using FMJ 55 grain pills... Am I going too light or heavy? What else could be causing this?
Awesome weapon. I will take a transferable AR-18 for half the price of an M-16. The May 2009 issue of Small Arms Review has an interview with Arthur Miller, a designer of this weapon. Check it out for first hand information.
This came AFTER the AR15/M16.... ArmaLite sold the rights to the design over to Colt, and Eugene had to come up with something for them to sell. He made a cheaper version, with more stampings instead of forgings... AR18.
Well the performance of my AR180 is better then the performance i get out of my AR15, though the comfort isn't as great as the AR15. This is only my personal opinion.
It feeds every round with no problem, where as i have feeding problems with my AR15 and use the forward assist time to time, overall I feel the 180 is more reliable. Accuracy is about the same, but all depends on what barrel manufacture, length and barrel twist you have.
Are you sure it is not a magazine issue? Does it jam with PMags?
Who made the various parts of your rifle?
An AR made by one of the Mil-Spec companies should not jam, especially under range conditions. I have 600 rounds through an AR15 w/ a CMMG upper... no failures of any kind, various types of magazines, various type of ammo (cheap, steel cased ammo too).
The AR doesn't have reliability problems, if it is made right...
Stoner had nothing to do with this design. He was long gone to greener fields when it was being designed. The AR-18 was the work of Arthur Miller, George Sullivan, and Charles Dorchester.
If you can please PM me. I own a AR-180 made by HOWA. And anything I can learn is helpfull. Last I heard there were only about 20,000 made.
Mine has a very strange button on the rear of the guide rod assy, just behind the sight. It makes no sense to me. I would love to know what it was for.
Also is'nt it about time the AR-15 catch up with the short stroke piston system?
well the real reason for the development for the AR18 was Armalite sold the rights and license for the AR15/AR10 to Colt. When Colt was able to sell the AR to the U.S. Airforce and U.S. Army, Armalite needed a new rifle that it cold sell to military that wouldn't violate the license colt now owned. Armalite couldn't use direct impingement gas operation so it "reinvented" the riffle so it could be made more cheaply by using stamped metal construction. The original Gas operating system is better.
Really? All I have read leads me to believe the AR18's gas piston system is superior. Less fouling in bolt. The H&K G36 borrows heavily from the AR18's design, and it is a very reliable weapon. Now the military is trying to find a replacement for the M16, and all candidates are gas-piston designs... the direct impingement design seems to be on it's way out.
The 18 only lacked in ergonomics, and a good bolt catch. One more day at the drawing board and it would have been THE RIFLE for all combat. I love mine, but I have the need to build an Ar-15 now.
Mike you need a history lesson the AR18 was not developed as a PREDECESSOR to the M16 but rather a SUCCESSOR, developed in the late 1960's and introduced commercially in the mid 1980's as a cheaper .223 alternative rifle because of the stamped upper receiver and AK-style bolt assembly. The AR18 also inherited certain design influences from the Daewoo Max-1 and Max-2 AR-type rifles.
I own a Black Widow, and any info is a help. Finally someone posted a video. Wish I had been first. I hear there were only about 20,000 made. Mine is a Howa from Japan.

Did you have this upper made for you? I know there was a shorty version of the AR-18, I think the S model, but this looks custom.

The front grip started life as a GG&G CAR Tactical AR15 assembly. I performed major alterations to make them fit the 18.

What kind of performance? Accuracy? Reliability? Terminal ballistics?
Performance is a broad term.... define performance.

Fuck impingement. And its just now that the Ar-15 gets the upgrade. I love my 180. And the IRA calls them the Black Widow.
