  • thanks

  • Thank you soooo much I can talk to my friend now

  • Thnx

  • Thank you for making these videos. I really like how you teach

  • WRONG, WRONG, WRONG.....any word starting with a letter is a "home sign" and not technially ASL.

  • how to flowers smell beautiful?

  • My son is non-verbal(autistic)speech therapist suggested I start signing and he's been catching on to what I've learned from Melissa...It's working but should I be teaching him ASL instead? My hope is that he will start talking at some point and I just want this to be a way we can communicate for now

  • @kimb786 you should teach him ASL, but also talk out loud when you're teaching him so that when he starts to talk he will also know how sign. it would help him alot. and yes i believe he will start to talk, that is why i put "when he starts to talk" :) this way he gets both languages in.

  • @xene7x thank you :-) I know he will too!

  • Wait so this lady is teaching me wrong???? Ive learned like 50 words from her!!!!

  • @AllOfTheAbove213 unfortunately a lot (not all) but a lot of her signs are wrong. Check out Signing time. Really good resource and place to learn ASL.

  • So wrong. I am disappointed expertvillage.

  • you rule, melissa

  • This is similar to ASL. It's what the deaf community calls SEE (Signing Exact English) and it's very commonly used amongst hearing people who don't know ASL. ASL is not English. What she is teaching is close enough that if you use this to a deaf person, we will understand it, it's just not our preferred method of communication, but we will get your point, and you can always fingerspell anything we don't understand your sign for.

  • @daniisshy hi, u see to know what you're doing, and i was wondering how to tell the difference between ASL and SEE. I want to learn ASL, and this show i watch has sign language in it, but the sign for "dance" is the same. The show is called Switched at birth, and its authentic, but are they signing ASL or SEE? If you could help that'd be great, i want to learn the right way.

  • i thought the letter P is formed like a K but upside down, like how the K has your fingers facing up and the P has the fingers facing down?

  • "maybe you want to offer someone a chair, or a table." . . .

  • ummm.... is that really how you sign a P cause I thought it was a up-side-down K??? that's how I was taught to do a P.....

  • not asl? god ive been studying these videos CRAP anyone know a better channel for learning how to

  • @MrsSkittleGir omg yes it is ASL i would know i have my brother and parents that i have to use ASL with all day long cus there def and need i at and i am there interpreter all the time so don't stop useing this lady ok she is good

  • @MrsSkittleGir try aslpro.com thats what I use. its pretty easy to use

  • After watching and signing the words in these videos, I've realized that my fingers are really long!

  • okay,so i've been studying to her vidoes, and this isnt american sign lanuage? whattt the hellll.

  • She is so wrong ! And out dated . Deaf people teach in silence . She needs to go get her Berkeley City College on . Cause she is SO wrong . Remove her off of the net giving people the wrong signs. Signing is a beautiful thing lets keep the signs true !

  • not correct

  • 2 thumbs up best sign language class on youtube.com

  • There is a difference between having an accent and signing things wrong. These signs are wrong and it's frustrating and sad to watch. FLOWER looks like you're eating a sandwich.

  • @AlonnaUNF28 i think eat only uses one hand but its basically the same way of holding the hand

  • One of the biggest misconceptions in sign language is that every sign needs to be an exact way. I keep seeing that some people say, "That's not right!", but most deaf people have an "accent" just like hearing people. For example, "mom" might be made with a closed fist, or with your fingers straight out. Both are right, and a deaf person can read most "accents."

  • @Libramoon77 i thought so..she signs "help" differently than I do-with a closed fist. I was taught to sign "help" with my thumb up

  • @trishdadish82 its closed fist for help

  • Byufanatic.shut up!!!

  • cool so I wasn't wrong! I thought the vid was not great b/c I learned the signs like what you folks discribed pretty =beautiful ect...

  • You people have to understand that everyone has their own style of signing and from the text books signing seems to change every year and any new sign you know become "old" sign. So no one has the the right say she is signing wrong, she is doing just fine.

  • @IntenseObservation Actually, your comment is incorrect. If you were to grab a Japanese-English dictionary and learn a few random words (incorrectly) would that make you qualified to teach Japanese? I didn't think so. As a certified, full-time ASL teacher, I'm quite qualified to state that this woman does NOT know ASL.

  • @BYUFanatic the only thing off about her is her sign for mom and dad, her other signs are fine. I think you are too full of yourself. Just like in the english language, america of course does not speak english properly and you will only annoy people trying to correct each word they say. As a person who hangs on with the deaf community, as i stated before everyone has their own style of signing and I doubt you are anyone to correct deaf people. You just need basics and fingerspell and you are ok.

  • @IntenseObservation Are you a certified ASL instructor? Have you been raised in the Deaf community? If not, you are not qualified to state this woman's signs are "fine." DANCE is incorrect. She is not using any wrist motion. FLOWER is wrong. It is a one-handed sign. PRETTY is done with an open hand, ending with a closed hand. CHAIR is done with the index and middle fingers of both hands. TABLE is made with both palms facing down, not one facing up, one down. She did EVERY SINGLE SIGN wrong.

  • Please do not continue this kind of education. It destroy ASL culture.

  • this girl bugs me

  • No offence lady but my little cousins deaf she has been her whole life for almost 7 years and Ive become fluant in sign language my whole family has and I think its safe to say every word coming out of your mouth is total shit!!

You have no idea what your talking about! and to everyone watching this video I agree with some of the comments telling you to find a better source of information. .x

  • Does any one know how the sign the word "some"

  • Comment removed

  • Everyone - PLEASE, do not use this woman's videos to learn ASL. This woman knows absolutely nothing about ASL and all of her videos are full of errors. There are MUCH better sources out there!

  • Oh my gosh, she is ridiculous.... She is totally wrong. She's hearing... why doesn't she mind her own native language.

  • @NinaTexas04 ok wow really even if she got some wrong, to say oh she hearing mind her own native language, is so stupid! so by your standards the deaf should only ever talk to the deaf and no one should try to learn not only signing of any form but any other language ???? that is uber close minded.

  • OKay, have no interest in trying to see behind the words to see your hands clearly. Won't be returning to this for ASL. Sorry.

  • Why post a video then cover it in words and black background. Pretty stupid!!!

  • @jrbj2000 I was wondering that too, but then I thought, maybe because it's a sign language which is for the deaf.. you know? But I'm not really sure.

  • @xaa4life26 Lol, when I first say this video when I made my comment the whole screen was in black with words on it. I guess the fixed the problem. It was pretty crazy when I first saw it. At least you can see it now.

  • Thanks! This is really helpful. I know some of the alphabet letters but I just started them today so hopefully I won't get frustrated. My problem is that I have not-so-good hand coordination.

For "chair", should you always use your left hand to make the "C" and then use your right fingers to sit in the chair? It seems like order would be important. Anyway, great video! :) I've met people who used sign language but I didn't know any. I felt sad about that and it would help if I knew some.

  • Comment removed

  • but melissa plz let me know how can i see your signs? the written instructions do not alow me to see you

  • Meddling in Deaf language and represent as ASL teacher, tsk tsk. This is NOT even American Sign Language, none of them whatsoever.

  • what is "bandana" and "not cool" in sign language? :p

  • I full deaf. Pretty different. Dance different. No ASL ... Video confuse .....Thankyou gerriecl below..

  • I am not a very good interpreter but I can see she learned from some ghetto place I know thise signs and not 1 is right!!!! I would not reccomend, I would rather go to aslpro.com

  • Epic fail! All of signs that you do wronggg.. that's incorrect sign language. You should take thr best asl class, not that crap signs.

  • It's suppose to say "SIGNING",

    toolazytocomeupwith1.

  • WRONG.. only one right.. "dance" She is sick. Where did she come from? Who let her teach? This is outrageous. People inventing signs is hurting the deaf. I will thus invent different ways to pronounce words orally/ vocally for hearing people and see how they like it.

  • She did pretty wrong. I learned it different. And chair too! So um yeah. Nt to be mean but it's

    Not how I learned...

  • THIS IS NOT AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE.

    THIS IS manually coded english.

Thsi person demonstrating these signs is clearly not certified to teach ASL (ASLTA); and clearly not a certified interpreter (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf).

IF ANYONE WISHES TO LEARN AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE< THEY NEED TO ATTEND ACCREDITED COLLEGES OR UNIVERSITIES THAT OFFER ASL.

  • @sjw47630 , I've taken ASL classes at an accreddited college and these are the exact signs I learned for these words..

  • @pastafarian37 As a CODA (a child of a deaf adult), these signs not correct, you need to double check the qualification of your professor. You're going to look stupid if you try and sign that to deaf people. The only one that was right was dance.

  • American sign is soo stupid!!!! It's very, very different from irish sign

  • Sneezy1996, don't judge ASL based on this video. This is not ASL. SHE is the problem, not American Sign Language. She is probably signing SEE or some other junk, that she learned from a book and then decided she was an "expert."

  • this isn't american. its canadian and its different.

  • @broadwaymelody33, actually, ASL is what is used in Canada too. Or LSQ.

  • it says signing, not singing...

  • um...did I miss sing?

  • I have learned alot. thank you

  • She does her P's wrong soooo stupid and she changes constantly

  • @Kerihilson7 She might be using a form of the British signing

  • She's from Canada, she's a news reporter. They actually do have a mix of British and American Sign. It's like a mish mash of different accents, if you will.

Expert village will let anyone on here, so don't bash her too much. there's another signer on the website who is better, as she is actually deaf.

  • wow so amazing...

  • she never did singing...... lol

  • @MrBuTtErMiLkBiScUiT it isn't singing it's SIGNING. =p It is not hard to mistake the two, though. So it's ok.

  • it says signing....... lol

  • this is great! so helpfuL!

  • you suck lady! i heard it was wrong asl sign! stuff :P

  • It's signing.. not singing....just so you know ipodtouchmaster...person.

  • lawls that was great!

  • did she show us singing?

  • really helpful! thanks :)

  • Whoa, okay so the signs here are pretty stiff, and she used massive amount of english or SEE like pretty...other than that the palm orientation and such is correct, but we use ASL for conversation, not just irrelevant movement of hands but to accomplish communication. Try Signing Naturally 1- ...really great.

  • You Say Them 2 Slow.

  • Sh eis saying them slow so you can understand dufus.

  • is this wrong? or what because i really need to learn this bacuse at my school there some peple that cant talk so i want to be able to talk to then can please some one aswer me and tell me is this is wrong or not thank u very much

  • Its right!

  • this is fab,it's something,I'd always liked 2 learn,I think it's cool =)

  • if this is wrong then where should I go! I need to learn to sign at least some basic things to communicate with this girl...

  • WhOO CAREESS it MEANNSS dAA SAMEE thiNNGG!!! dER diFFERENt fROMM OthERRSS bUt MEANNSS dAA SAME..GOShh YAll SOO StUPiDD lOlZ!! NO OffENCE!

  • You're a bit of a hypocrite to call someone stupid when you spell like that and and use so many capitals.

  • STHU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • we are stupid? check your grammer -_-

  • WHATEVER

  • Grammar**

Sorry, I did it for the irony. :P

  • Her signs are wrong...

  • how!? LOL Im tryin to learn they better not be wrong...

  • Your face is wrong!

  • wow how imature are you -_- i mean are you so stupid you actually comment back to someone like that? so childish.

  • I could be wrong, but she sounds Canadian. Maybe some of these signs are regional, even though they are ASL. Just a guess.

  • i used to speak sign language wen i was little and this is wrong

  • I learned ASL very different...is she wrong, or am I?

  • She is wrong. You probably learned from a Deaf person or an ASL teacher. She is neither. In fact, she is a broadcasting personality. She is merely "acting" like an expert.

  • Hearing people, when a Deaf person says that someone is doing sign language wrong, why on earth wouldn't you listen to them? She is neither Deaf nor a qualified ASL teacher. Seek accurate sources of ASL information elsewhere. For example, BYUFanatic on YouTube is an ASL teacher who is Deaf. He also uses repetition and signs in slow motion to help people who are learning.

  • Thanks for the tip, i'll check it out. But in this ladies defense, even books that are written by supposedly qualified ASL instructors can vary. So do teachers, as I found out the hard way.

  • Completely horrified as I watched her making these signs! She got all the signs wrong! Take this from me, a deaf person who uses American Sign language as his primary language: she definitely is NOT an expert!

  • This lady is not an expert. Please rate this video "poor" because she is misleading thousands, and makes mistakes on almost every video.

  • The sign pretty is initialized so that is really english and the best way to sign it

this really should be signed as beautiful. The other thing is you are signing a communist sign for sit. This should be the first two fingers sitting onto the other first two fingers. Please look in a dictionary. Just trying to help.

  • I am learning ASL and I also have learned "sit" as the index and middle finger on the other index and middle finger. Thanks for being helpful. I'm so excited that YouTube is helping me broaden my signing knowledge!

  • Your ways is the way I learned it also. But, like any other language, there are variations. It's good to learn other ways, you never know when you might come across it. :)

  • The "pretty" sign looks like initialized SEE, that's my guess.

  • i know a different sign for pretty...i never seen that one..but thank u for this videos cause is helping me alot to learn more and more.

  • ya i always thought it was different too

  • This is not an ASL - -...

  • um yes it is...

  • I want to know how to say THANK YOU!

  • flat hand to chin, palm in, and move it like away form your face, the top part at least

  • No good signer.

  • She looks like Carice Van Houten

  • Ya i tried this on someone but she slapped my face so i think i did it wrong.

  • hahaha

  • 1:46 ............... HAR HAR HAR!

  • haha 1:49 is better

  • She is signing "SEE" which is a manual code for spoken English. SEE is based off of sounds and follows English grammar and syntax. DON'T confuse this with ASL! (American Sign Language)

  • @signer4life Kay I'm really tired of people saying this. I have no idea what I'm learning when everyone says this isn't American Sign Language. Is it British? Spanish? French? I don't get it. I also don't understand how to use verbs to say a sentence such as: "I'm playing ball and it is snowing outside." She teaches a lot of nouns and some adjectives. So, I can't use these to talk to a friend at school? -.-
  • dam. ive been learning the basics off this for a few months now :( so she's completely wrong or is it just this particular clip?

is there a good site that i can learn from watching videos? because i really really love sign and id love to learn it properly.

  • D: When I signed flower I got fuzz up my nose. Very unpleasant.

...I'm going to ignore people saying she is wrong for now. I suppose knowing something similar to what I want to know will be useful until I take signing in collage.

  • fyi Melissa is CANADIAN... and she has videos on all kinds of things, office organization, etc... so I don't think she's a sign expert at all. (I looked her up on Expert Village)

  • I agree with signalex. I was a certified interpreter and now teach ASL at a high school and I would NOT recommend this site to my students. She is teaching what seems to be signed English with sprinkles of S.E.E. signs in it, maybe even from Canada or England or something...

And there is no "facial expression" that is part of the sign for flower!

Maybe someone needs to write to Expert Village itself.

  • @gerriecl They seem to be Canadian variations; but even still she bounces too much; and she is not relaxed.

  • @gerriecl not very good "signed English" from Canada or ENGLAND!!! or somewhere......now, thats FUNNY!

  • @gerriecl thank you im taking sign language one and i was trying to learn and i would have been using this usally expertvillage sucks one most things but i thought id try

  • Thanks for the comments about learning elsewhere. I'm getting frustrated with the randomness of the groups of words. I would like to learn some basic greetings - "nice to see you", "how are you" or even "great job with this" etc.

Also, I'm confused with her C - it was a backwards C, so, would I reverse it? Can someone suggest a great source for learning the basics? (I don't think this is it)

    Thank You!!!

  • at least she got the sign for dance right...

  • is this wrong? oh no! i was so excited. oh well.

  • i have the same name as you lol

&& well i am taking up a class of American Sign Language, so I'm a beginner && this is also helping quite nicely

  • I have had some asl and I dito the others in saying you have the signs all wrong, leave it to the deaf to teach us sign language they know what they are talking about.

  • PLEASE PLEASE do not learn from this clip.. she is showing ALL WRONG!!! wrong sign for flower.. and chair.. oh my god.. and sign for table.. i am not sure what it is. Believe me if you meet other deaf people and they would not understand you one bit!!

  • Oh my, I should have watched the whole video. The sign for "table" and "chair" is also wrong. It makes me sad that this woman actually believes that she is teaching sign language. Expert village - nope, try again! She's NO expert!

  • Hey Melissa, do us all a favor and STOP making these videos. You sign for flowers is WRONG! The sign for "pretty" is an English sign, not ASL!! You are teaching groups of words out of context that have nothing to do with each other!! Stop, for the love of god just stop!!

If you want to learn sign language, go take a class from a certified instructor, not her!!

  • offer someone a chair, or table :O?

  • and that sign that shes doing for chair is the sign for ride.

  • You are correct. This woman wouldn't know sign language if it bit her in the a**!!

  • um pretty is not like that

  • lmao

    you want to

    offer someone

    a table

    cool vids.

    heleped me alot.

  • when you offer someone a table or a seat at the table ......

  • great clip

  • Great clips!

  • this was so helpful. Thank you

  • Thank you!!!
