  • Main problem we had with our first Akita was it kept offering toys to the cats that were bigger than the cats, one of the reasons we got a second Akita.

Both have always been very good with all our cats, even mothering the kittens and looking out for them against other cats.

  • The akita is using his paw the same way the cat is lol

  • All three of my akitas were fantastic with our barn cats. They played so gently with them. This is a great example of how gentle they play.

  • Any animal willl be friendly with another, so long as they grew up with it. For example, a fox and a rabbit will be best friends if they are raised together from birth. Also keeping your pet assiciated with others from birth will help it be more friendly.

  • so a person could have an akita and a cat

  • a person can have an akita and a wtv else in the world you want people dont realize they say akitas shouldnt be around other pets but akitas can be around anything its up to the owner to train them to be good around anyone..my previous akita was arond a cat a smaller dog that i still have that plays with my new akita now and its about how you train them to behave

  • if i get 1 will it hurt my cats even if i rais it from birth?

  • I got my Akita 3 years ago and had the cats since they were kittens. When my akita arrived they were scared. As he got older, the cats got more relaxed with him, but they are afraid of him. He tries to run after them with his toys to get them to play with him but they run away. He has never hurt the cats, just wants to play with them. My advice is get a young akita, socialise your cats as much as possible with him, and make sure your dog learns he can't harm the cats and to be gentle with them

  • You see how it's standing over it's neck, it's showing the cat power, he is showing the cat it could take it out in a bite if he wants to, they won't act on it though. Practically all akita's will do this when they are " playing. " even with other dogs.

  • i dont think so kid not all akitas are dominant like that..it depends on how you train the dog..when my little tiny chihuahua thats smaller then my foot jumps all over my akita my akita lays on his back and lets him know he gives up

  • Fuck off with your ignorance first off, I said Practically all... I have a Chi, and a Akita as well, my Chi will do like 360 bites and hang off her neck and shit.. My akita just don't want to hurt him, it's her little buddy. On the other hand, if she is getting annoyed, she will put him into his place.

  • such an angry kid i feel sorry for your dogs loser

  • Feel sorry for my dogs? lmfao. Why? They are probably alot more geneticly stable then your mutts.

  • like owner like dog...and there isnt anything stable about you

  • lol, why the fuck do you think I bought a Akita.

  • Awe how cute!...........I wish my akita had that kind of tolerance!

  • soooo lovely!!! what a dog...great breed

  • HAHA! This brings back memories. At my old place, my Akita (then just a pup) made friends with a neighborhood cat through the window. When they finally met outside, they flopped all over and pawed at each other with no aggression or fear whatsoever. Now, at three years old, my Akita is uncharacteristically tolerant of smaller animals. I credit that damn cat! Great vid!

  • either you guys had the cat while your akita was a "little" puppy...or thats one gangsta kitty...LOL

  • knowing Rumiko takahashi was inspired by akitas 2 make inuyasha, it is like inuyasha is playing with buyo.

  • my akita only plays wit my cat but not anyone elses but also myn is gud wit people

  • This just shows that all akitas try to use there paws like hands. Mine do all the time. Oh and mine chase anything that is small and has fur.

  • I have two of them and they also use their paws like handes its cute and really amazing

  • Mine never has done this, it's not a pure breed either though, but it's akita dominant.

  • It's Inuyasha and Kagome's pet cay Buyo...LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

sorry I had to say it

  • I do teh same things with my cat and it hurteds me all the times

  • my akita destroyed all live creature

  • Well to that point he had always tested the waters w/ me and when I went for the bone he came after me too but after a belt in the mellon and flight across the living room he reconsidered his dominance w/ me. Now while I felt bad for physically discipling him in such a manner I do not regret it one bit. to this DAY he has never tested me and will give up a warm greasy pork chop w/o so much as a snarl. Anyone ELSE though... Not a chance. He's a great dog from an AWSOME breed but not for the timid

  • Good call to not discipline your Akita W/violence and its great that it worked in your case however; Akitas are very alpha and if not show otherwise one could have a real problem on there hands w/ a passive/aggressive dog. My 6 yr old Akita Shogun is an awsome companion and friend but I am the ONLY one he will obey. When he was 2 he nabbed a chicken bone from the garbage and my ex made the mistake of trying to take it away from him and almost lost an arm.

  • she looks EXACTLY like my akita.... she is 7 months and already about 80 lbs!

  • Akitas are what you want them to be. Akitas are what you make them. Every puppy is a blank sheet. Ignorance and stupidity are the things that give any breed a bad reputation.

In the right hands, there is no greater dog!!

  • greatly said.. just like huskies.. they'll protect the cat of the house faster right after biting the mailman

  • so cute

  • our lovely akita (now 6 yrs) came to us as a rescue/abandoned 5 years ago...i knew NOTHING about akitas BUT she loved my daughter (then 6 yrs old) and all SIX house cats and me...beautiful inside and out we can't imagine life without her...how could ANYONE in their right mind abandon such a dog?!?!

  • you are so right. my akita is now 7 months old and he is adorable. He is extremely friendly with people and dogs and is very playful! Akitas have a rep of bad dogs but its the owner who is bad not the dog. I never hit my akita, I use the reward thing to train him and just show him my disaproval with other ways so he doesnt' get aggresive through violence

  • thats a brave cat akitas dont play lol

  • they probably been together for a few years. and i'm sure the cat is declawed. nonetheless, i'd agree that akitas can be quite unpredictable.

  • any animal can be unpredictable.. i have an akita, she wouldnt play with a cat, but she wasnt raised around cats and doesnt understand them... she see's them as a treat.

  • >_< my akita wants to eat my cat!

  • soooo lovely!!! what a dog...great breed

  • My Akita would let my cats sleep by her belly at night. It was the cutest thing.

    She lived to be ten.

My new puppy, a Akita/Boxer mix is a little let friendly with the cats, all he wants to do is chase them. haha.

But yeah, Akitas are great with cats.

  • what about shiba's

  • my american staff sleeps with my kitten to lol i wanna get a akita for christmas hopefully my dad or mum will let me their seperated so that gives me 2 chances lol :)

  • This dog is so beautiful...the way it stands on his four legs I find it beautiful to paint ^.^

  • I used to have one. Now he's gone but it was a love of my life.

His name was Zen, he had sooo strong personality, but he was so loving at the same time!

  • All Akitas originated in Japan; the split between American style and Japanese style has only come about in the last half of the twentieth century. Today's American style more closely resembles the pre-WW2 Akita dog of Japan.

For lots of information on Akitas, including tips for successfully introducing them to other animals, check out the Akita Rescue Mid-Atlantic Coast web site (akitarescue dot org).

  • Akitas are so awesome. Especially the Japanese Akitas that originated in Japan.

  • do you think a japanese akita will beat an american akita in a fight

  • Maybe so. But I wouldn't know for sure.

  • this is realy puppy? oh my god so big

  • i have got a white akita just like the one in the video and they are amazing dogs they are play full but are very very protective if anyone comes to the door that my akita dus not no he gose mad but with a little time smellying the stangers hes o.k ( they are very big dogs)

  • I can't wait to get my hands on my dear Akita! I want to train him! Did you train yours? Obedience and stuff

  • PART 1 - I have a female Akita for almost 3 years. She is THE BEST and the sweetest dog I can imagine to live with (prior to my Akita, I had an Irish Setter, Mini-Puddle and Samoyed, so I do have some experience with the dogs - at least I think so). Akita's are just amazing and I'll always buy an Akita! My girl is very protective of me and my husband, our house, our cat - actually, everything we own is hers :-)) That is how it goes with Akitas! :-))

  • PART2 - Her purpose in life is to be with her "pack" and to participate in everything we are doing :-). She is curious, VERY smart, strong minded, somewhat aloof with strangers (she picks who she likes and who she does not like or trust... and up to now, she was a 100% correct in her judgement of the people).

  • I haven't socialized my Akita properly yet because he has some health problems right now. He is 2 months old so I should be able to make him sociable right>? I am not too late or something...

  • You should be fine. He is only 8 weeks old - a baby!

BTW - don't let him climb steps on his own (up or down the steps) for as long as you can, so he does not damage his joints and develop problems with hips later in life (that rule applies to all large breeds). They also sell food for Large breed puppies that they are supposed to eat up to 2 years of age.

  • Thanks for the tip!!!! Is he allowed to stand on his 2 feet?

  • :-)) of course he is... but I am guessing he'll be standing more on his 4 feet/paws and just occasionally on his rear paws. I just saw a video of your puppy... really, really cute! :-))

  • I will be posting more!

  • "(she picks who she likes and who she does not like or trust... and up to now, she was a 100% correct in her judgement of the people)."

That was true with our Akita, too. She knew who was no good just by smellin' them.

  • it's alright...I just wanted to know some info about the Akita....they really are great dogs...I think ^.^

  • I love you Akita....question: does your Akita get along with strangers...I'm thinking of owning one myself ^.^ maybe you can tell me a little bit about them...I've done some research but I also want to know from owners as well...

  • Akita's in general are aloof with strangers. Although I took my girl out for a lot of socialization when she was young she's still not fond of strangers. When people come over she'd rather just go lay down in her corner than say hello.

Also, just because that Akita likes cats doesn't mean they all do.

We used to have a cat, he and my girl got into it one night and she nearly killed him. We kept them separated after that. Her prey drive is just too strong for her to play with cats safely.

  • my female is very friendly with strangers and other dogs, but she loves chasing cats, squrilles, birds, lol pretty much anything that looks fun to chase, she is very tame, she lets very small toddlers play with her, i can bring her around without a leesh and she will respond to my commands, and she is not very overly protective about her food, bones, toys, ect and i raised her with a ton of socialization.

  • I am not an owner yet.I am sorry If I gave that impression. My Akita is coming next week or the week after the latest. A friend of mine bought a Siamese cat and we are going to try and socialise them.

They will be both very young so they just might get along. If not, at least I tried.

Yes, Akitas are aloof. I love that characteristic!

  • PART3 - She hardly ever barks (but she "talks" a lot :-))I would say that is extremely important to start training your new Akita puppy ASAP and socializing him/her with people, dogs, cats... When my dog was a puppy, I used to go almost every night to a PetsMart where she was able to play with other dogs of all sizes and she was 'touched' and hugged by many people of all ages (and also she was exposed in seeing other animals as well).
