Ever noticed the mistake in this movie when Tate dies? When he gets crushed by the machine it's rotating clockwise. When he's dead it's suddenly rotating anti-clockwise. I finally got it on DVD after all those bloody years of long waiting. I'm also pleased it's wide screen and stereo. When it was on VHS, it was dumb why it was released in mono. The only disappointment is, two scenes are still cut.
I remember watching parts of this movie when I was 9 or so(27 now). I freaked out when the kid had a "ridealong" with that police officer, turned it off and went to sleep terrified. Anyone know if you can get a hold on this on dvd? I would like to see the whole movie, I guess I`m nostalgic these days.
@Schizo27 Any smart kid would have known to stay quite duck his head down and let them drive by, but no the kid screams out ITS THEM ITS THEM. What a moron!!!!
Such an under appreciated video. It should be re-released on DVD or a modern remade version. Cohen as Gary Oldman or Ben Kingsley and Tate as maybe Colin Farrel??
If anyone is interested, I have 2 copies of this film on VHS. One was won on eBay from a video rental place closing down. The tape has its original sleeve cover. And the other I bought from Amazon.com with a cheesy sleeve cover. Both are in great condition. I'm willing to sell and part with only one, so if you'd like the other one, send me a message and let me know. And as far as I know to this day, it has not been released on DVD. That's why I chose to get the VHS copies. So just let me know!
This is a great "B" movie. It's long overdue for widescreen DVD release. The late, great Roy Scheider brings a lot of subtle humanity to his role as veteran hitman, Mr. Cohen.
Being a part of a theatrical agency here in Houston, I watched them film this movie. That was more interesting and exciting than the motion picture itself HAHA. There were no more than 5 people in the theatre on the release night.
And now, a response to RudyizCool's year-old comment: That's because the distributor gave it absolutely zero marketing push (no tv/radio/print ads) and dumped it a couple hundred theaters--compared to the standard 1,500-2,000 at the time.
Eric Red did not direct Near Dark. It was Kathryn Bigelow.

This movies has one of the most unique endings ever!
But Roy Scheider still deserves better material.
