  • This is great - I'm a piano player and my guitarist wanted to do this song so knowing what he's playing really helps me create my piano part. I agree that the sound is primary. But, to be theoretically correct those chords are 7sus9 chords. And the altered IV chord progression is would actually be: A7/C# Dsus9 | C13 A7sus9 B7sus9 | The "Dbmin b5" chord is actually just the top three notes of an A7 chord. HOWEVER, I think the way you explained it actually makes it easier to learn. Cheers!

  • I'm reallu sorry for my scolastic english... but i think that is good enough to say "this is the best video/lesson I ever seen" thank you sooooo much .... grazie e ciao dall'italia

  • Fantastic. I struggled a bit with this song especially the C#-D-C mods. you also have the right feel for it. Any douche-bag trying to correct you has undoubtedly never taken their guitar out of their bed room. This came up last Thurs Jam nite and the funny thing is that the other guitar player knew the chords but didn't capture the right feel for the verse riff... so we alternated and it came out preety good. Thanks for this vid. extremely helpful!

  • Cool dog! ^^

    Cool playin' ;)

  • Dude, you rock. Great chops and helpful instruction. If the point is to learn how to play this song and not quiz you on your theory I'd rather you physically show us what to play rather than why it's called what it's called.

  • I have a Mini Dachshund too! :D

  • I like your dog.

  • dont worry about your sinign, it reminds me of robert cray's singing, has that same tone

  • Thanks Mike!! I´ve been wondering for a long time wich are the right chords for this version.. It seems that my search it´s over... Saludos, desde Sinaloa, México!!

  • Canta mal pra carai xD

Só dei positivo pela boa vontade...

  • relax im a doctor

  • PUPPY! I love your Dachshund!

  • thanks!

  • Thanks man... finally someone show's it slow and simple... this has really helped me... please, post some more lessons!!

  • XD is great!

  • Thanks man! Saved me hours! lol thanks again

  • Thanks for the lesson. This was a big help....

    Cheers!

  • Thank you so much. Max from Bologna, Italy.

  • Thanks a bunch, very helpful and cool sounding chords

  • Thx man, it really helped me out!! I don't understand the slightest bit of jazz, but by playing these chords (among some other JM stuff), I'm starting to get it a bit. Thx again!

  • good sound!

  • nice wiener dude!! BTW thanks for the vid

  • good job thanks man:)

  • thanks... I've trying to improve my playing - and this helps a lot...

  • Nice job. We are playing this tune (your way) this weekend.

  • Mayer sucks. Do the Steve Marriott version, dude.

  • don't worry about all these anal types - this video has helped me a lot and I don't care what the chords are called - thanks man!

  • you're very welcome my friend.

  • @lennymac123 Anal?

  • I'm not going in semanthic terms in order to bother people or anything. Just wanting to help out a little bit with my knowledge and trying to get some critics in order to improve myself as musician. Do you get it...? Or u want it in other words? Hahahaha =D

  • It's all good man. It's just that in musical terms, there are tons of valid ways you can choose to look at something. It's just that there are tons of people posting comments saying, "No, this is really what it is, not this" instead of "or you can also choose to look at it this way".

A lot of times, the people that post those kinds of comments on here are wrong.

So it just gets irritating after a while.

  • The two "slash chords" you are talking about are really dominant suspended chords. In easy way--> A7sus4(9) and B7sus4(9). Theyre also used in the secod part. If you want to make little embellishments just like mayer does, beware of using the mayor third, it should be completly omitted.

  • great, more semantics......it never ends.....

  • And I meant mayer's singing before anyone gets testy.

  • nice. e blues. no Dbm7b5. C#m7b5 to D2sus4 to the C6 on the first. reg blues would just go to the 4 (A for E blues). here they go to the C# which is the sixth in E (3rd of A). cool. then they get to the 5 (B7) & turn around w/ the A9 G9 A9 (7ths implied here in jazz). your sound is perfect. great 12 bar blues song originally by ray charles i think. schofield is great & mayer, as he ages, starting to sound like stevie ray.

  • Maxamizer5004, and everybody else commenting on the names of the chords. Dbm7b5#11: a b5 is a #11... nobody refers to a chord as a b5#11, it's redundant. And besides, even in strict music theory jargon, I'm voicing the b5 an octave up, making it a #11. Who cares? it's the same function? The point is you know what it sounds like.

  • D7sus4: not correct. There's definitely a 9 in there. The 4 is in there, but it's an octave up, making it an 11. It's not necessarily a sus chord just because I'm not playing the 3rd in my voicing, the actual chord in the music may not be a sus, and I'm just playing a workable grip over it.

C 6/9: yes that's a C6/9 and not a strict C6, but in jazz, they're interchangable and it's up to the musician to make the musical choice. In reality, who cares? both chords serve the same

  • As for your slash chords, think about it. A/B and B/C#? think about where your hands would be in those voicings, you're way off.

Overall, the important thing is that you know what notes and extensions are being played within the chord and that it's the right voicing of the chord that you're playing.

Arguing over what to call the chord.... leave that crap to the academic musicians.

  • Thanks for the lesson, but wrong names for chords tho..

  • What do you think the names of the chords are?

  • Hi Dutch!

someone asked about the Db (C# is VI (vi) of E, certainly common in blues, sooo...). however, "Db"-7b5 is [also] A9.

i just heard this song 20 minutes ago, so i maybe wrong...

after the #11 i hear in the C chord, i hear maj 2nd movement, like G on the 4th string with A on the 3rd (D on 2nd)?

i have not studied all the tuts here. the only version i have, and am using here, is the Sco/Mayer on Tonight Show.

Sco is the first guy i met, briefly, when i got to Berklee in Sep. '72.

  • Hi,

Good tut. I hear a #11 in that C chord on the Mayer with Scofield on Leno on YouTube.

  • God thank you. Finally.. been tryin to learn this by ear forever.

  • Nice Dachshund

  • that helps, thank you

  • Great job. I like the feel in your playing. Hi Dutch!

  • WTF !!...it's good !....it's funny when you say " dr " : )

but your performance is very good..

    nice

  • great tutorial -Thanks!

  • glad someone can tell me the chords!

a thousand people can show me the riff, but not the chords. Thanks bud

  • what kind of strat is that by chance?

  • I custom made my guitar. It's a one piece alder body sprayed in nitro and it has a Warmoth neck and Suhr pickups.

Thanks for the kind words Ricky!

  • Great job and i like the style!!!

haha the singing was cool, it's just like the guitar it takes time haha!!! and i hate time!!!

    lol..

  • you should try transposing to match key with your vocal range..........or not. good job tho. thnx

  • Great work. What amp/amp settings are you using? I'm looking for that clean beefy sound you have

  • The amp is a personal project that my friend rebuilt.

He totally gutted my old Fender Silverface Twin and rebuilt the whole thing with high quality components and with a bunch of modifications.

I custom made my guitar. It's a one piece alder body sprayed in nitro and it has a Warmoth neck and Suhr pickups.

Thanks for the complements on my sound! I really appreciate it.

  • ya it sure does sound good my les paul is soundin crappy to that fender

  • i dont know what kind of les paul you have, but no stratocaster sound bether than any les paul, work on the tuning of your amp:P

  • You could not be more wrong my friend. It is a matter of taste actually... And it is all about what kind of music you are playing... I don`t like the Les Paul best for instance. I love the Gretsch hollow and the Gibson ES335 hollow. As for the solid I love the Gibson SG and the Les Paul, but as I said it is not my first choice...

  • i know, those guitars all sounds great. and it is a matter of taste, but I play a lot of different kinds of music, and for that the les paul is great by the way, asspecially with the p=90 pick-ups. But I just think that stratocasters all have just no round tone at all, and it sounds bat in every kind of music. But still your right, thats my oppiniun

  • Finally someone is fair... That is wise indeed. Stupid me I was preparing for a battle... :)) All the best.

  • haha n00b. If that were true, would that make Clapton, Hendrix, Frusciante, Knopfler, etc all idiots? Stop being a Slash fanboy and think before you speak.

  • I am no slash fanboy, I just like that tone better, and if clapton and hendrix ect. have a different uppinion, ok, that does not make them idiots you idiot.

  • Haha then you should have said "IN MY OPINION, Gibson's sound better."

  • strat < anything

  • I think so 2, and o, don't place everyone in a box from who is fan of who. When you really learn to play guitar, your not gonna be fan of somebody anymore;)

  • How do you tune an amp, genius?

  • tune [ww.] fix adjust genius

  • THANK YOUUU this helped me so much !!

  • nice playing man! i like it!

dont feel sorry for the singing, i love singing too! even though my sister says no! haha!

  • Thanx! I had to skip the dog. Sorry for that..

  • hey ur sooo gr8! :D love seeing people having fun wid gr8 music :D..

check out my page.. add me as a friend :D

  • Thanks for the kind words. I'll definitely add you as a friend!

  • Thx alot mikey..you've helped a lot with those chords..

  • you're welcome!

  • love that part: sorry bout the singin'

I dont bother at all btw

  • Dude i jus want to thank you those chords were aggravating to try and figure out. We play the intro differently, but they both sound authentic. Great tutorial. thanks again. Nice strat by the way ..i love mine to death.

  • thanks for the kind words!

Yeah, I built that strat myself. I love it!

  • your tone is great man! :-)

  • Thank you very much!

  • Hey Mike, very nice. The only thing I would add is that the C6 chord you show is actually a C6/9 - it has the classic sound of a 6/9.

Other than that, very well done!

  • yeah you're right. I screwed up on the names of the slash chords too. It's hard doing all that in one take and being totally "correct".

A lot of times, even though it's 6/9 chord, I'll think of it just as a 6 chord. There's also the quintessential 6/Major 7 chord too, but I think of that just a s a 6 chord as well.

I know how the chords sound and have a good idea of how they work. A lot of times I think of chords simply in my mind, but theoretically correct names can sure be a bother.

  • you can also call those Gmaj/A and Amaj/B dominant 11 chords. By the way do you know how they come up with chords like a Dbm7b5 in the key of E blues:P??

  • Very well done. You should do more.

  • u play it similarly to scofield..

    mayer plays it quite differently..

    good vid though.

  • good point. Yeah I copped this off of the "original" version of it, the one off of John Scofield's ablum "That's what I say" where John Mayer does a cameo.

thanks for the kind words! Happy New Year!

  • oo hello mike.. i'm italian artist and you are very cool!! thanks for very utility lesson

  • You're very Welcome!

  • Thanx Bro please do more easier jazz/blues stuff. Thats right where I'm at...or mabey some Agogo stuff by Scofield...nice work Pat.

  • thanks for the kind words Pat!

Yeah, I'll try to put more stuff up man. But boy, is life kicking my ass right now, it's hard enough just to find time to practice.

I hope to have more stuff up in the future, just don't know when that be right now.

  • Nice work man. Youtube needs for musicians like you giving back. Appreciated the video

  • Thanks for the kind words!

  • Very cool! Thanks for posting this...helped me a lot figuring a bass part over those middle chords. Also glad to see I'm not the only one with a "bothersome" dachshund!

  • yeah dude, doxies rule!

    thanks for the kind words!

  • Thanks so much, ESPECIALLY for the chord names! I am learning music theory and it helps me understand how the song works so I can write some of my own stuff. About the singing, I think that if you just let it out and try not to strain your voice I think it would help some! Not bad though (I sure as hell can't hit those high notes singing)

  • You're very welcome!

Yeah, the voice thing. I'm working on it. Taking voice lessons and whatnot. Thanks for the encouragement!

  • really helpful, thanks alot and good playing!

  • You're very welcome!

    Thanks for the kind words!

  • thnks man. i learned the riff by ear but the chords just completely threw me off

  • you're welcome!

yeah, it took me a while to sound them out too.

  • OMGOSH THANK YOU

  • You're welcome!

  • Thanksss!!!!

  • thank u man

    helpfull video

  • I don't know why this doens't have a 5 star rating. I've been trying to figure out those pre-chorus chords for over a year now. Yours definitely sound better than what I was using.

  • Absolument excellent...Absolutly nice !

  • Merci!

  • Nice work

  • thanks man! keep givin back

  • really good video man. make some more!!!

  • Thanks dude. I couldn't get the chords either. But now... fuck yeahhh!!! cheers.

    Andy from England

  • Thanks man, I couldn't figure those chords out to save my life...

  • hey great.

  • Hi Mike,

Thanks for this one mate! Great job! Love your guitar tone too...I agree totally with your comments about the talent on youtube...I'm always amazed at how many amazing musicians I find on here...anyway keep up the good work...cheers mate!

  • man, instead of the C6 after the D, use C(b5) add 9. That's the one.

    Cheers!

  • Great stuff! I googled the chords and found this. Nice one.

PS got a couple of '80s Sco vids in my account if you're interested.

  • Mike

Do more...get Dutch in there too!

Dutch play pedals steel or anything?

Dig the chickens in the back too!

  • Mike

    Aloha

Thanks so friggin much for putting this out!

I, and apparently several others, have been trying to nail this for some time! And you have been a great help. This is a really fun tune and you're singing' ain't gettin' in the way of the guitarwork! You seem totally cool.

    Thanks again bro"

    Peace.

    blackdog

  • Thanks for this. I've been struggling with this one for ages. The other ones I found suck compared to this.

  • Do you like the wormoth necks?

  • sorry for the late reply. But yeah, I love warmoth necks, they're great!

You just got to know what you want and like, and they'll make it exactly as you ask. Takes some experimentation, but then you get to try different things out.

    I'd definitely recommend Warmoth.

  • thanks for the lesson

  • I'm John, I wrote La Migra, and Skyline. Thanks for your support!

  • thanks for this one bro!

  • You're welcome! I like your band! I checked your myspace page. Are you Brian or John?

  • nice man

yeah, i've always kinda guessed around with those chords, its nice to have a tutorial like this so i can see em right there

thanks for the shout out too man, i really appreciate it.

  • hey, no problem man. Keep posting videos!
