I made a stomp box which didn't work - I think the problem was it was too hollow, and caused feedback. I reckon the key might be to use a very solid piece of wood. There are some pretty decent looking ones on ebay though, so I might just shell out for a ready-made one.
I was wondering..you mentioned that you couldn't get the bass sound you wanted from a mere piezo pickup, yet the ultimate solution was, indeed, a piezo sandwiched between two pieces of wood. Is THAT alone what made the difference? Did it perhaps provide more resonant surface or something to enrich the sound?
I'm still learning acoustic logic, but as I watched all the different stomp box instructional video, I, like you, thought people were overthinking i.
