I am planning on giving the super squat program a try-I am 130 pounds soaking wet and would like to get some hard muscle onto my frame. It will not be easy, though, because I have longer legs than most others, so I have that much further to go down and come up.
@tryandlike also, maybe not so many exercises on heavy days. Focus on the basics. Don't do squats and deads on same day. They're both very taxing. Also don't do bodyweight every day. You need to get some rest and recovery in order to build muscle. Especially if you want to gain 20lbs! More is not always better. Check out Zach Evenesh website (type into google) and sign up for his free PDFs also check out Matt's website. He has free PDFs.
@tryandlike make sure to get a long enough stick or PVC or even use resistance bands. I'm not double jointed and I can do it. As for your training, that sounds good as long as you're progressing in weights, reps and/or sets, then you will will get bigger. Just make sure to eat ALOT like more than normal because soccer is a great sport and burns calories like crazy!!
This is very impressive. I am trying to gain 20lbs. I'm 6' tall 155lb now (skinny I know). I want to get bigger legs for soccer. Do you think lifting heavy two days per week will make a difference? For example, Mondays and Fridays lift heavy, and play soccer the rest of the week, and do body weight exercises (like pushups, pullups, situps, and bodyweight squats). The heavy days i will do variations of deadlift, bench, squat, powercleans, rows, and shoulder press. Thanks. Great video.
Matt, please forgive me for a basic question, but I see that you go well past parallel at the bottom of your squats. I just started going deeper in my squats and so far so good, I try to ensure that the hamstrings touch the calves at the bottom, is this good? Any tips would be awesome , great video as usual! -bill
very impressive. i've just gained 20 pounds in 2 months doing supersquats once per week. takes 4 days to walk normal again. i'm 35, 190-210 pounds. now i'm doing 180 pound supersquats, 3 sets. who would have thought i had a bright future at 35 years old. maybe if i keep this up i'll be supersquatting 300 by age 37.
brilliant Matt, am in my mid 40s. used to do weights 30 yrs back. gonna start again. The stuff you do is exactly what i am gonna do. with ofcourse a fraction of the weight.lol
@LieutendantDan what a chump like you sees as "fake" or impossible, a guy like me does before breakfast. This isn't even hard for me anymore, and I assure you my calf size has nothing to do with it.
@mwich40 a month later looking at this video and my comment over again I feel like a jackass for saying that. I apologize for being a dick, I wasn't watching the video close enough.
Nice!! Anyone that performs 20 rep squats like these has my respect (not like it's worth much) and deserves to be respected by others. I hear (and understand) that these are some of the hardest ever! One Oldtime strongman (can't remember his name) did such an intense 20 rep squat that his teeth even hurt. I can't wait until I start up on the 20 rep squat. I'm just waiting until I become a little more advanced. So have you ever considered doing some light barbell pullovers after doing these squa
@mwich40 Thanks Matt. But why not just throw 3 45 pound metal plates on each end and be done with it? Why loading the bar in this manner. It is akin to loading 12 5 kg plates per side. Is this done as an affectation?
@spudnutsncoffee i usually warm up 50 pounds at a time, so throwing on 10 kg plates works easy for me sometimes, especially free standing outside the squat rack if i need to dump it. In the rack , sure, I usually train with large plates. But here, i just kept tacking on one plate at a time until I got to my working weight
@spudnutsncoffee thats going to vary for each individual, but i squat frequently, so what works for me is to do 2-3 reps every 50 pounds or so til I get to my working set. 1 option: bodyweight 2x15 bar 1x10 95x8 135x5 185x3 225x3 275x2 315x1 335xmax something like that works for me, but it varies depending on how i feel, what plates i am using, etc.
@mwich40 That sounds reasonable. I use to love the SSquats program, but I have an illness which prevents me from oxygenating. Even if I use sup. oxygen, it's iffy. 2008 I was in the hospital 10 times. Lost 70% of my lung function. Only this past week did I dare try 20 reps again. I used only the bar. As the week progressed I was able to use more weight, but not nearly enough to equate to a 10 rep max for 20 reps. I am still trying to learn to breath again.
only super squats are REAL squats! only the people with the strongest mind are able to do that. I've just done it a few hours ago, twenty reps ass to grass. Great clip!
Great post. I remembering reading and article a while back about a routine called “Squat and Milk”. I have also heard it called Breathing Squats and sometimes Super Squats. I was always afraid to try it because of an old knee injury (broke it in half), but I think I am finally ready. Everyone should do S&M at least once. Thanks for the reminder. First I have to finish MOS by Zack and Smitty lol.
if you love to train, and love trying new programs, you will find this very compelling. Its like a game to see how high I can go, i really look forward to squat day, as boring as it looks, it gets me jacked up
@mwich40 Great idea. So much of training is finding motivation. You have to do whatever it takes. Especially, after 30 years old. I can find more reasons to not try than ever before. I've lost most of that spontaneous irrational motivation.
"Where am I going with this at my age."
"I'll never be the best I could have ever been, had I pursued earlier."
"Are any great achievements realistic?"
"This feels more like a job than fun."
Every week those pop into my head, but I keep going.
@SMCStudio you start with a weight a little below your 10RM and crank out 20 reps. You take your time, breath, and squat. this weekend is the end of the 2nd week for me. I started at 315 x 20, a few days later, 320x20, then 330x20, then 335 x 23. My goal is 405x20. my plan is to squat 10 more pounds on saturday than i did on Tuesday, then 5 more pounds the following Tuesday, Then 10 more Saturday... I'll continue until I stall then go to plan "B", hopefully I get to 405 before i stall.
i got to 220x20 when doing the 20 rep routine. and i wasn't walking like you are after that ;)
but even better is the dan john's "100 rep workout". do 100 singles. i did it with squats. one squat per minute. barely made it home, couldn't walk the next day.
@0wnagefactory make small incremental advances in your training and stay consistent. you are 17 with a 190lb squat, if you add 1 lb a week to your squat, thats about 50lbs a year, which would be a 250 lb increase in squat strength (full body strength) in 5 years, giving you a 440lb squat at age 22. Then you have 10 more years to discover yourself under the bar before you'll be my age now. Then others will envy your strength, discipline and will

Something about those plates looks off. How does he come up with 335 pounds here?
spudnutsncoffee 1 year ago
@spudnutsncoffee bar =20 kg=44 lbs
6x10 kg bumper plates on each side=12x10kg=120 kg=264lbs
there is a 5 kg metal plate per side = 22 lbs
there is a 2.5 lb plate per side = 5 lbs
264+44=308+22=330+5=335
hope that helps
