Terrific song and anime, but is there an alternate version like the one in the anime? I'd love to have that one as well, as that buildup is tremendously powerful.
Certain part of this song (1:00-1:10 - where it gradually builds up right before falling slow and calm again) really reminds me of different one from a movie I saw, but I can't recall which movie it was or what song it was and it's been bugging me for weeks now >.<
It embodies all the tragedy of Monster; this was the song that really first made me feel really sorry for Eva after Martin's death, the song that made me realize the gravity of Grimmer's death and, as thebirthdaybomb pointed out, the song that so tragically embodied Tenma's journey into the heart of darkness.
@Pevensify On the base, it's a horror/thriller anime. But it goes into all kinds of depth about psychological conditioning, eugenics, World War II politics, ethnic cleansing, deontology, forgiveness, and plain human relationships. It's sad, creepy, and exhilarating. Unfortunately, it's a bit slow to get started, so most people stop watching. But watch the whole thing - you won't regret it.
@chairmobile I most certainly will, thank you! I can deal with sad and creepy. I like creepy. And I can also deal with slow starts...I waited like 30 episodes before Naruto got good. How long is Monster?
@Pevensify 74 episodes. It sometimes deviates from the main story, but revolves around Tenma (main character) and a few others. I still don't get everything - rewatching it. This particular soundtrack plays during the one scene that made me cry from this anime.
Also, you might like Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni, Ergo Proxy, and especially Death Note if you liked Monster. I'm sure you've probably seen some of these already.
This song is one of those they'd play whenever some kind soul would offer Tenma a place to forget all his troubles and live a happy life, but he'd always refuse with the same line: "I'm sorry, but there's something I have to do..." Those moments always made me feel like Tenma's journey was cursed with an inevitable end of failure, and he knew it all along yet he continued on.
Poor Grimmer D;

@chairmobile I have seen the first episode of Death Note, and I like it. But I haven't heard of the others. Like I said, anime is new to me.

@Pevensify Keep watching Death Note - it gets way better!

This is also my favorite song. They play it differently in the anime, but it's still very beautiful here.
