Why would you light it at the bottom? The whole thing would become unstable and collapse!! Have you ever felt the heat produced by a stack of burning pallets? I can assure you, the heat produced at the top of this stack will not be long in working itsway downwards, therefore producing a long burning safe bonfire.

You are absolutley spot on - I too would like to have seen that! However, as much as it would be spectacular, it wouldnt burn evenly. The bottom would burn ferociously away before the flames had reached maybe halfway up.The whole thing would likely collapse sideways onto the spectators. I think the organisers might not be too keen for that to happen!

@jambopiper Hi Jam.... Sorry, but I don't think you completely understand the mechanics of fire. (It helps that my father is a firefighter.)

Heat rises, and fire VERY quickly burns upwards on a structure where there is fuel above the source of the fire.

A Christmas tree, for example, that starts to burn at the bottom can be completely in flames in 3 seconds.

Same with this bonfire. Set at the bottom it would probably been entirely in flames in 20 seconds. Top to bottom all on fire.
