Hey HH, instead of using a bunch of D cell batteries, which is a waste of power, I hacked a computer power supply by soldering the green wire and another black wire together, and then hooked up a piece of pencil lead to the 12 volt rails on the power supply. The light glowed much brighter than in this video. I'm working on a video response right now...

Just a little advice. If you dont have any pencil led get a power source approx 12v and hook it up to both ends of a normal pencil. Make sure its attached to the led of the pencil so sharpen both ends. This will burn off the wood on the pencil and leave you with the led.

i make them with some nikel strips from a scourer, a small candle, a cristal pot, a couple of wires and 2 4.5v battery.

1) draw two thin holes though the cover and get the wiresthough the holes.

2) attach the thin strip to the wires(the wire must end up being inside the pot)

3) get the candle inside the pot and light it. then close the pot.

4) once the candle has self-etinguished, conect the wires to the battery.

5) enjoy your creation.

Reminds me of the time, in basic training, my buddies showed me an open wall socket, for a light switch. I stripped down a pencil to the graphite. I poked around for a while, and I placed the graphite flat against both of the nodes inside, completing the circuit. Supposedly, you could hear and see the resulting flash throughout the entire floor, the room above, the room below, and in most of the parking lot outside. The pencil shredded down to the nub, and my face was covered in graphite soot.

It's also easy to see moving your figures around. Looking at a 100 watt light bulb. We know it consumes 100 watts and runs on 110 volts. This automaticlly tells us the amperage is about 900 milli amps, or just a hair under one amp. You might be able to slide this pie thorugh electronics, like kicking up the voltage, but there is always a trade off, or loss in amperes, keeping you at the same wattage. Closer leads, would increase the wattage however.

Rather than adding batterys, you could have moved your aligator clips closer together on the pencil lead. It reduces the impedence. You could have also clipped a few pencil leads at your same length, increased your voltage, like you did, and got more effect. The only difference is you would have been using more current. It's easy to understand why this all applys how I'm suggesting. Wattage (AKA consumption) is always Voltage times amperage.
