  • This could be their greatest ever song. Then again, you could say that about as many as 50 of their other songs.

  • Under-rated album for sure. Took me years , as a huge REM fan, to truly appreciate this album.

  • Goodbye REM, and thanks for all your great and inspired music.

  • note the age ..........get afraid

  • float their mal-content

  • Very true Littlevolcano, it is from criminally underrated album - One of my favourite albums.

  • aww fuck it, he went into the fire to hurry on sundown by hawkwind.

fitting if ya knew him...all im saying...

  • jesus, two tunes that get me everytime.

both played at my brothers funeral.

this tune, which i dont mind mentioning,

and a tune by hawkwind...which is just for me.

  • is pink hair at unplugged mandatory or

  • Utterly gorgeous

  • magnificent song.

  • @cosmicrider287 i think so to thanks

  • so good they make a second one

    the first one suck

  • Great song from perhaps their strangest album. These clips are great Caybro. I guess they never released this concert on dvd etc...

  • @radiofreerain there's a sort of bootleg easy to find really well made !

  • This is probably R.E.M.'s best song. It's so true, as all of us who have gone to the University have learned!

  • My favorite REM song. Very underappreciated.

  • no tak jako stipe zpivat umi o tom neni pochyb,ze?

  • Wonderfull Concert. The Acustic version ist more better than from the CD.

  • Excellent post

I completely agree with your well stated perspective.

  • Please, the very fact that REM is still around and making good music is in itself proof. Nivana was a good band, but these guys had and have lots of experience on that band. I love this sad song BTW. Always one of my faves from UP.

  • whats this about, im not really familiar with the story, could you tell :)?

  • @crashedcan I'm assuming you're asking about Stipe trying to save Cobain. The R.E.M./Nirvana collaboration project was actually something Stipe created just to try and help Cobain. Stipe knew how depressed he was (they were good friends) and was trying to get him out to Georgia and get his mind focused on something so as to stop the spiralling depression. Sadly, Cobain didn't go and killed himself days later.

  • they should bring out a CD (or DVD) with their whole unplugged v1 and v2 on it

  • Micheal Stipe almost saved Kurt Cobain. What a man.

  • simply one of the most amazing songs ever heard, this gives me goosebumps

  • michael stipe... you are THE GREATEST ever

... nothing can compare to r.e.m.

  • so right Stipe is a genius

  • Well Nirvana and Kurt Cobain were better, but at the moment yeah your probably right, maybe the pixies they are touring again

  • Kurt and Nirvana are not a better band. Just because someones tortured and imbalanced and does heroin and ultimately a tragic "poetic"suicide doesn't necessarily lend any strength or gravitas to ones music and "art". Cobain was good and had talents but I would wager, in the end, R.E.M. have written beter songs, played better and have more prolific talents.

  • well if you think that you have clearly taken more heroin then Kurt. I am not judging kurt on his death but is fabulous and diverse body of music, far greater to that of R.E.M in a shorter space of time. and i would like the money i have won from that wager delivered in the next to weeks please.

  • @beesley27 Can we agree to disagree? :) Also, note that Kurt sorta idolized Michael Stipe and was an admirer of R.E.M. 3 years ago I would have agreed with you as I didnt see what all the fuss about R.E.M. Then I got into them. Also, dig what was in Kurts cd player when they found his body--An R.E.M. cd! I like Kurt too, though!!

  • Are you Kidding me?!?!?!?!?! Nirvana's music sounds the same... its a good groove, their two albums were really good but R.E.M. has more diversity on one side of one of their albums than Nirvana has in their entire career!!!!!!!!!

  • @beesley27 Were Kurt still alive today, he's slap you silly for saying that.

  • Another excellent, well stated, and objective post from someone who "gets it".

sorry for the late reply, but thought it was worth it.

  • Amazing song. This version is much better than the one on Up. Stipe's wailing voice rocks here.

  • Dear readers, my apologies

I'm drifting in and out of sleep

    Long silence presents the tragedies

Of love. Note the age. Get afraid

The surface hazy with attendant thoughts

A lazy eye metaphor on the rocks

  • Yes, and R.E.M Sleep, I believe, is the deepest sleep you can achieve. If you don't achieve REM sleep, you don't dream.

  • an amazing song...from we all agree very underrated up album...you can tell that Stipe loves this song, pay attention at the end...very emotional. very strong performance...

  • Killer album.'Up' is a mighty piece of work.I think Accelerate will prove itself in the same way too.

  • R.E.M. - Remember Every Moment...

The band's name. And makes a perfect sense for it... THE BEST BAND EVER.

  • The bands name REM comes from the term "Rapid Eye Movement".

    Look it up.

  • @Fliedermous

Not exactly. Yes, that's where the term R.E.M. comes from, but that's not what it means to them nor why they picked it.

  • From what I know, Stipe was said to have randomly opened a dictionary and found the abbreviation R.E.M. and thus was born R.E.M. the band.

    R.E.M. means "Rapid Eye Movement"

They (Stipe) did not pick the name but chose it randomly from the dictionary. Since it was random, I understand that there was no real "meaning" other than the proper definition and it was done purposely so that no attachment of "meaning" would alter the band's essence.

This is what I understand to be true.

  • Oh, I am assuming that since you do not explain any of your points I have to believe that you are guessing or relaying incomplete information from another source.

    Prove me wrong.

  • Watch the video of them performing So. Central Rain on Letterman. At the beginning, Letterman asks about it and Buck explains it. There's also an old Nickelodeon video somewhere of them answering that question.

But what you've said is more or less correct. It was random and meaningless to them—especially as Stipe says, "There weren't any bands with just letters [...] It doesn't mean anything."

But that wasn't what you implied in your first statement.

  • Actually I implied only that R.E.M. has a specific meaning based on a complex physiological deep sleep effect on eye motion.

Nothing more was offered or implied by my original post.

  • Hi..Youre right..UP AND REVEAL are amazing albums which are completely underrated!!!

Im from Germany and i was glad as they played some "old" songs in Berlin and Dresden too..

    Greetings to all FANS

  • excellent! i keep comin back to watch this vid.

  • Beautiful song. It amazes me how Up and Reveal are underrated. Gorgeous albums.

  • for anyone interested, i wrote a toon partly inspired by this song, though i stole none of the chords, melody or lyric....it's called in an empty room. humbly yours, keith.

  • beautiful song from a beautiful band ... my heart melts ...

  • Que canción más linda.

  • They are amazing in their growth and artistry. I love you REM !

  • always been one of my favorite songs from 'up'...'up' would have been a complete classic if 3 or 4 songs were trimmed out of it.

  • Up is such an odd lil record, but there are so so many good "songs" on it... this is one of my favorites from it. too.

  • Kind of a "lost" REM song, but I've always loved it.

  • Thanks again for these caybro. Did they do Chorus and The Ring as part of this set?

    Anyone?

  • They didn't afaik

  • no, they didn't do " chorus and the ring " for this unplugged. another of my favorites though ... " its the knowing with the wink that we expect in southern women ..."

  • i love this song!!

    my favorite song of r.e.m.

    thanks!

  • I love this song one of my favourites, thanks for posting!!

  • yeah your completly right. up was so over looked. and i do think because the songwriting on it was so diverse, ppl didnt understand. its such an amazin album and song song makes the hair on my neck stand. i only wish i could write as song half as good as this.
