gillan was so good. . he really lost it around 1990.for a while or something then i saw a couple later performances in early 2000 that were good I think.. .Overall he had a lot of good years of great singing and you can see him on some shows to when he was young already had a quality vocal
I read somewhere that Blackmore was ranked something like 250th on some lame magazine's list of Top 500 Guitarists of All Time! Are they serious? Along with the obvious others that should be on anyone's Top 10 (maybe even 5), after listening to these solos alone, how can anyone leave Blackmore off their list? To this day, lots of guitarists still scratch their heads asking themselves "how did he do that?" On the 2nd solo, I counted 3 different simultaneous effects/tones used over just 2 bars.
hey everybody go to jun626 and watch his solo of this song.it is note for note. it is scary perfect. no i dont know him i am from detroit and he is from japan. he nails this solo perfectly!
Blackmore at his best! His later work with Deep Purple before he formed Blackmore's Night was quite sub-standard, lots of 'scrapy scrapy' noises between actual notes, no decent melodic stuff like we hear here.
Thanks for uploading this, Ledzep69Man. There are so many different "Made In Japan/ Highway Star" versions on youtube, but NOTHING beats the original. Blackmore was off the hook in this version.
I am always so impressed by John Lords organ solo, I never, until now, noticed Ritchies wonderful guitar accompanyment, complimenting Johns solo. (On the left hand channel, best heard through headphones).
and to think they almost did not do thhis project even after was not to be released to us market the real video would be nicea real find other then the 10 sec clip
Perfection in sound. Funny that this powerhouse track should have an Everly Brothers influence: Wake Up Little Susie at 1:41 and 1:47 etc. One of the meanest riffs in Highway Star, it's amazing to think it originated in 1957...
When Rock was Rock and you couldn't get enough! This song would come on WRIF in Detroit and the every car on Telegraph Rd. would have it blaring. What a time we had.
I saw them in concert in the mid 70's in Springfield Mass. It was the best concert I ever saw, amazing. The original Made In Japan Album, where this song comes from, is the best of all Deep Purple music. They shouldn't have put out two Made In Japan albums. It's confusing and the original one was better.
Deep Purple at its best !! Blackmore is one of the best guitarists around. And just listen to Child In Time off this album. Gillan's vocals will send chills down your spine.
I was 14 when my older brother brought MIJ home in 1973. This is the LP that turned me on to DP and I'm still a big fan to this day. And *this* was the tune off of the album that was IT, man! I got goosebumps when I heard that long sustained note at 0:51 and still do. Play this, then put on the studio version from Machine Head - the live version absolutely kicks. its. ass. No comparison.
@b1zook ...actually just a few second before that long note Ritchie plays a few rhythm notes just as Ian Paice is setting the stronger snare... that bit makes my spine tingle!
Yup, probably the best live album of all time.... (Although Thin Lizzies Live and Dangerous is a contender..)
@b1zook How about the last 4 bars of Blackmore's solo...where he goes crazy with the whammy bar and then goes back to hammer-ons in a seamless transition...absolutely brilliant, nobody has or will play like that, never again. Save this recording for eternity. Raw savagery. That's the best way I can put it into words. Controlled mayhem on the guitar.
I wonder how many of us got speeding tickets to this tune when we were in our teens??? The BEST!!!! AT about 110 - 115 mph the telephone poles fly by to the beat of the song.
My brother came home with the Made In Japan album when I was about twelve years or so, he cranked the radio up with Highway Star.......
It changed my live and Almost ten years later it still turns me on (in a positive way) everytime I listen to this cd and it makes me drive way too fast everytime....
This is the song that made me a permanent Ritchie Blackmore fan. I first bought this on vinyl on Sept. 5, 1973, the day I had my high school senior photo taken. How many people can say they have a picture taken the same day they bought Made In Japan??? And I still have a copy of that picture!
Finally! I kept listening to all these other "Made In Japan" Highway Star versions and was wondering if I was nuts. Then I found this one. All these others arn't even close.
Only this recording of the song is worth a fuck. Night and day compared to all the others. The way they played this, it's a completely different tune.
@KazKylheku The original tapes of this and other recordings from the MIJ tour were released on CD about 15 years ago. I have a copy. This version is there but sounds nothing like this because it was extensively remixed. While the recording is faithful to the musicians' input, the mix is entirely different from what the audience heard at the concert.
DP were a virtuoso band. They played everything different each time they played it.
Esta versión de Highway Star fué en Osaka el 16 de Agosto 1972, existen versiones de esta gira del 15 y del 17 de Agosto, pero definitivamente la interpretación del día 16 fué la mejor......gracias por compartirla.
This is pure pussy. I agree with all who said this is one of rocks greatest live moments. Why these people are not in the HOF is one of lifes great mysteries.

This is a band at the very zenith of their career and it absolutely doesn't get any better than this.

Ledzep69man - I am 46 years old. We lived in Mexicio in the early to mid 70s.
