  • Nothing in rock these days comes anywhere close to the excellemce of this..its like comparing champagne to dog piss.

  • gillan was so good. . he really lost it around 1990.for a while or something then i saw a couple later performances in early 2000 that were good I think.. .Overall he had a lot of good years of great singing and you can see him on some shows to when he was young already had a quality vocal

  • ok who has done better since ? enough said

  • still amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Like a freight train about to crush your ass..the most seismic version from the best Deep Purple album period.

  • Listen to Glover's bass track in the verse just before Ritchie's solo. "I GOT BLISTAHS ON MAH FINGAHS!!"

  • @Jimed756 it's not bass! it's ritchies guitar with tremolo down!

  • I read somewhere that Blackmore was ranked something like 250th on some lame magazine's list of Top 500 Guitarists of All Time! Are they serious? Along with the obvious others that should be on anyone's Top 10 (maybe even 5), after listening to these solos alone, how can anyone leave Blackmore off their list? To this day, lots of guitarists still scratch their heads asking themselves "how did he do that?" On the 2nd solo, I counted 3 different simultaneous effects/tones used over just 2 bars.

  • Sorry, typo, meant to say it never GETS old.

  • This song NEVER gest old, ever.

  • Blackmore's solo here had got to be the all time finest!

  • Still sends goosebumps down yer back

  • what's the day of this concert ?

    because i've already seen 15 and 17/aug/ 1972 !!

    which one is this ?

  • @lukerendar 16/aug/1972

  • ancora oggi dopo 40 anni ti scorre nel sangue come fosse cocaina

  • I rate this one of the best live performances of any musical genre.

  • hey everybody go to jun626 and watch his solo of this song.it is note for note. it is scary perfect. no i dont know him i am from detroit and he is from japan. he nails this solo perfectly!

  • A true Purple Microdot CLASSIC! Ritchie was never better than this.

  • 4:16 for Blackmore's guitar solo!

  • love this album was introduced to this album in 1972 by big fat James

  • this is the one, nothing else like in the whole damn world!!

  • yes! Yes! YES! this is *the* definitive version.

  • Blackmore at his best! His later work with Deep Purple before he formed Blackmore's Night was quite sub-standard, lots of 'scrapy scrapy' noises between actual notes, no decent melodic stuff like we hear here.

  • this is original made in japan version, best version all time.

  • Thanks for uploading this, Ledzep69Man. There are so many different "Made In Japan/ Highway Star" versions on youtube, but NOTHING beats the original. Blackmore was off the hook in this version.

  • best live album ever

  • I am always so impressed by John Lords organ solo, I never, until now, noticed Ritchies wonderful guitar accompanyment, complimenting Johns solo. (On the left hand channel, best heard through headphones).

  • @metafis Myself!! I'm just hearing it now and I've been listening to this particular recording ever since it was originally released.

  • Let's build a time machine.....go back to the 70's and have some fun, back when

Zep and Deep Purple ruled the world!

  • one of the best albums of the history deep purple rocks ;)

  • and to think they almost did not do thhis project even after was not to be released to us market the real video would be nicea real find other then the 10 sec clip

  • 5:36-5:38 never reprod ever..

  • Perfection in sound. Funny that this powerhouse track should have an Everly Brothers influence: Wake Up Little Susie at 1:41 and 1:47 etc. One of the meanest riffs in Highway Star, it's amazing to think it originated in 1957...

  • 00:06 - 00:20 I love that part!

  • AMAZING

  • If I could only ever listen to one more song before I die, then this performance here would be the one.

  • @metafis I told my wife at my death party play 5:36=5:38 in a loop

  • Absolutely the best version !! still rocks like hell !

  • oK____________

  • I strongly agree, the best version of highway star !!!

  • Ritchie-YOU ARE THE MAN!!

  • best version ever......!!!!!!!!!

  • When Rock was Rock and you couldn't get enough! This song would come on WRIF in Detroit and the every car on Telegraph Rd. would have it blaring. What a time we had.

  • I saw them in concert in the mid 70's in Springfield Mass. It was the best concert I ever saw, amazing. The original Made In Japan Album, where this song comes from, is the best of all Deep Purple music. They shouldn't have put out two Made In Japan albums. It's confusing and the original one was better.

  • why there's two versions of Highway Star from made in japan ??

  • Finally, somebody uploads the original version of MIJ Highway Star. THE BEST1!

This is, without a doubt, the greatest guitar solo in all of Rockdom! The last 4 bars of Blackmore's solo = Brilliance beyond human comprehension.

  • Finally, somebody uploads the original version of MIJ Highway Star. THE BEST1

  • Deep Purple at its best !! Blackmore is one of the best guitarists around. And just listen to Child In Time off this album. Gillan's vocals will send chills down your spine.

  • fuckin' SPINE SHIVERING!!

  • Best Live album of all Times...

  • I Love the tags, "raging vocals, kickass drumming, bottom bass"

    Pretty Epic

  • I was 14 when my older brother brought MIJ home in 1973. This is the LP that turned me on to DP and I'm still a big fan to this day. And *this* was the tune off of the album that was IT, man! I got goosebumps when I heard that long sustained note at 0:51 and still do. Play this, then put on the studio version from Machine Head - the live version absolutely kicks. its. ass. No comparison.

  • @b1zook ...actually just a few second before that long note Ritchie plays a few rhythm notes just as Ian Paice is setting the stronger snare... that bit makes my spine tingle!

Yup, probably the best live album of all time.... (Although Thin Lizzies Live and Dangerous is a contender..)

  • @b1zook How about the last 4 bars of Blackmore's solo...where he goes crazy with the whammy bar and then goes back to hammer-ons in a seamless transition...absolutely brilliant, nobody has or will play like that, never again. Save this recording for eternity. Raw savagery. That's the best way I can put it into words. Controlled mayhem on the guitar.

  • @repetitivemotion

Yes, and his sweep picking (4:57 onwards) is magic.

  • @repetitivemotion He beat the hell out of that Strat, didn't he!!! Amazing.

  • @Jimed756 Who else played with that level of ferocity, talent and technique?

  • @repetitivemotion Um...NOBODY!!!

  • The fiirst and best live album I ever heard! Thanks for uploading this, the supreme version!

  • 70's rock and roll..where did you go?Let's build a time machine,go back and have some fun.THE MEMORIES FLOW AND I CAN'T GET ENOUGH!!

  • !! the Best version of Highway Star !!.., Made in Japan, not 15, not 17, it was 16/Aug/72...Thanks ledzep69man for posting it.

  • THIS is 'Made in Japan" THANK YOU!

  • my home sweet home......buddy!! how many times did our parents tell us to stop jumping on the bed and turn this rackett down!

  • my home sweet home......buddy!!

  • best version.............

  • I wonder how many of us got speeding tickets to this tune when we were in our teens??? The BEST!!!! AT about 110 - 115 mph the telephone poles fly by to the beat of the song.

  • My brother came home with the Made In Japan album when I was about twelve years or so, he cranked the radio up with Highway Star.......

It changed my live and Almost ten years later it still turns me on (in a positive way) everytime I listen to this cd and it makes me drive way too fast everytime....

    Be warned

  • The only ORIGINAL Made In Japan Highway Star on YouTube YEAHHHH!

  • Most Excellent!

    Thanks for posting the Original

  • pocaaa madreee de rolaa me poneee bn locoootee

  • pincheeee rolaaaaa me poneeee bn locoooooteeeee uuhhhhh sakenlaaaa la motaaaa

  • IVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS FOR YEARS

  • This is the song that made me a permanent Ritchie Blackmore fan. I first bought this on vinyl on Sept. 5, 1973, the day I had my high school senior photo taken. How many people can say they have a picture taken the same day they bought Made In Japan??? And I still have a copy of that picture!

  • Finally! I kept listening to all these other "Made In Japan" Highway Star versions and was wondering if I was nuts. Then I found this one. All these others arn't even close.

Thanks for posting the REAL one.

  • Jam?

its the best Highway star verison ever

  • @LowDeath23 tottally agree

  • hahahaha....whatever people say....Zeppelin cannot top this...HAHAHAHAH!!!!!!

  • @benchmat hey...........leave zeppelin out of this. both bands are phenomenal at what they do

  • Yeah!!!....this is the one on the MIJ that I got on vinyl......the very best version ...nothing compares to this!!!!!!!\m/ \m/

  • It's back!!! Thanks!

  • I can only wonder how may speeding tickets this song has caused.

  • Only this recording of the song is worth a fuck. Night and day compared to all the others. The way they played this, it's a completely different tune.

  • @KazKylheku The original tapes of this and other recordings from the MIJ tour were released on CD about 15 years ago. I have a copy. This version is there but sounds nothing like this because it was extensively remixed. While the recording is faithful to the musicians' input, the mix is entirely different from what the audience heard at the concert.

DP were a virtuoso band. They played everything different each time they played it.

  • The best version of highway star of all time!!!!! 10 years since i lost the cd!!! Great to hear it again!

  • nice to see it back!

  • The best driving song ever.

  • I think I've still got the vinyl double set in my basement in a box somewhere. I bought it when it was first published.

  • Example of Ritchie beating the hell out of that strat!!

  • 4:18 -Here it comes... 4:22 - here it comes...4:24 Here it is!!!

  • THIS is the original!!!!! I finally found it!!! Many thanks for posting this.

  • the best dipeiper!

  • Esta versión de Highway Star fué en Osaka el 16 de Agosto 1972, existen versiones de esta gira del 15 y del 17 de Agosto, pero definitivamente la interpretación del día 16 fué la mejor......gracias por compartirla.

  • This is pure pussy. I agree with all who said this is one of rocks greatest live moments. Why these people are not in the HOF is one of lifes great mysteries.

You might not agree with eeverything Blackmore says or does, but he can beat the shit outta that poor strat.

This is a band at the very zenith of their career and it absolutely doesn't get any better than this.

  • Can you beleive this. They wrote this song on a bus.

  • The Stratocaster really rings true on Blackmores' lead doesn't it? Just like all the stuff Malmsteen does.

  • I tried to share w/ facebook and can't I will find something else instead of youtube now you suck

  • @scottfalen I think you just need to get into your settings. I had a bit of trouble for awhile but worked through the google, facebood account connections and got it to work.

  • @scottfalen You just need to go into the connect accounts. It took me awhile but I was able to get then to jive and now I can post on facebook with no problem.

  • DP vs BS absolutely - but don't mix Zeppelin into that, cause it's just unfair.

  • DP were faster than LZ and BS combined

  • @kautilya21 I love Sabbath's sludgey, crawling sound. Definitely the founding father's of doom metal. It's not all about speed you know.

  • @kautilya21 Listen some bootleg of zeppelin period 71-72 or europeann show of dazed and confused and stuf ;)

  • The magic starts at 4:30

  • Nagyon elsült a kezük Osakában!!!

  • 1000% agree. The BEST Version of this Song and one of the best Live-Songs ever!

  • pumping rock, and in my opinion a guitar solo translating all what rock and roll stands for..........

  • Live in OSAKA JAPAN

  • BEST...ALBUM...EVER! No discussion allowed.

  • This is so great. I thank God for this one!!!

  • @HerrCarsten ¡Nein!--¡NIcht "Gott sei Dank"!

Instead, Let us thank The Provider: Ledzep69Man... :)

  • I had this on CD but whenever I wanted to show the dazzling guitar solo through youtube I always found different versions not as stratospheric as this one. Finally I can pass it on to my mates over the net.

  • This song should be played as loud as you can in your car!

  • no other song compares to this when driving fast

  • the best!

  • Glad I got to hear this today. Thanks.

  • Ledzep69man - I am 46 years old. We lived in Mexicio in the early to mid 70s. In those days, American and British rock n roll wasn't so easy to come by -- but an older American friend of mine had "Made in Japan" on reel-to-reel. I hadn't heard this version in decades -- and yes THIS particular version is the Real McCoy and yes you can tell from John Lord's riffing at the very beginning (as reyjaime notes). Thank you SO MUCH. A timeless classic for all and a Trip down Nostalgia Lane for me.

  • this guy does Richie's solo pretty good never heard anyone any better you tube highway star made in japan solo jun626 is the post

  • @tornadojoe WTF?! it is blackmore

  • Awesome! Finally the original version from the 'Made in Japan' Vinyl LP. Who compiled this CD with the same name?

  • this is the best

  • Indeed. Everything about this recording (especially the wail at 2:10) is just spectacular, and it makes the recorded of this version sound awful (tempo on the album version is far too low).

I don't think rock music gets much better than this.

  • @reyjaime Then there's the two G notes that Roger Glover hits during John Lord's keyboards at the beginning.

  • The real thing. Thanks man.

  • Somethinhg that isn't a shitty "live" version.

    Amen.
