What he was doing is not useless. In fact if he were to properly lock the arm and keep his body close, he could throw a knee to the groin or head butt followed by a throw or take down. if his opponents arm was properly locked and he stepped in close to the other fighters body he's protecting his center line so a groin strike the way you showed would not be as effective. thats "if" he were to effectively lock the arm, and that position is really only effective if he throws him after. Great job.
much respect 2 ne school who spars barehand. if i may b permitted to comment what the instructor corrected was not the same tech the student used.in the correction the instructors arm wasnt locked. the student had the right arm of his sparring partner in an arm lock if u look correctly. the correction should of been how 2 lock the arm properly, not 2 just throw it away and call it useless.there is no useless techs just techs that r performed incorrectly.thk u and pls dont b offended.muchrespect
@2bhappylive Hello thank you for your kind comments. you are quite right. This is just a moment in time. My correction is only that im sharing my preference for striking the groin. Even with an arm locked (which we would really try to avoid by following his power) I would strike either the groin or his head with my own...YOur point is well taken though. thanks
Hi, when you spar, don't you use kicks higher than knee-height/sweeps? as in to the stomach, ribs, head... I thought Fujian white crane uses those.
Also, why don't you guys wear head protection or at least gloves (such as MMA gloves if u need an open hand), then you can work full contact.
and one last thing you guys aren't moving to the sides almost at all during the spar (only some backward and forward).. overall very nice and i liked it (I don't do fujian)
@takeda780 Hi kicks as well as ground kicks exist of course. As with most southern systems, we use high kicks sparingly as they expose the groin and can leave one vulnerable to sweeps. Of course it depends who is kicking. Let me assure you both these fighters have excellent high kicks.
@takeda780 In any case, we will do medium contact fairly often but full contact tends to last a few seconds..Its not worth it. Moving to the side is a hallmark of a good fighter (especially in white crane)but keep in mind both these guys know each other too well and are of similar levels and in other to sidestep one has to defend versus a commited attack. They are no really committing as in a streetfight as they know each others tricks etc....
@whitecranecanada i training Hung gar kung fu and it has crane, tiger, snake, panther and dragon. but i don't see the the similarities between the crane and white crane that they use.
How would a practitioner of White Crane handle the MMA style with submission and grappling? I would think you should make a demo video on techniques against the MMA, BJJ style fighting. Thanks.
There are crane techniques in several systems. especially southern systems such as hung ga etc. there is also tibetan white crane (no relationus) and then there is fujian or fukien white crane kung fu. This is a branch of fukien white crane called flying crane. It is one of the original 4 branches of the said art...
as i have seen, this style have a lot much in common with wing chun kung fu. I cant stop feeling that there must be a relation between this two styles.
-wing chun and yong chun sound quite similar. As a matter of facts in pinyin the name is yong chun
-in the wing chung leyend, Ng Mui made up the style by watching a snake and a CRANE.
- Both systems focus on the stances, close combat and strikes. In fact, some wing chun branches utilizes phoenix eyes punches too.

@TaiJuJutsu - I agree with you ,cause you are correct in saying White Crane has some relationship with Wing Chun . The story you mentioned ,is based on highly respected , and treasured Oral Histories of many wing chun Lineages , not just some old legends . Wing chun is Cantonese , while Yong chun is Mandarin .The only thing this sparring practice session needs is more " Sticking " , but then again ,most Wing Chun today . sadly ,doesn`t have much either . Best Wishes !
I am a little curious as to why that clinch position has been deemed useless? Simply indicating a groin grab doesn't neutralize the potency of that position for offense.
NO problem, Actually, besides my white crane training, I am also a buck sing practitioner. In fact I have me your sifu once at a choy lay fut federation banquet. Best of luck and keep up the training!
@vorhees You would think with the way these styles handle weapon techniques they could do some damage to the street fights and can easily use a gun/taser too.
hello nice vid. you may be interested in Koshiki competition..open to all traditional styles..you can test you skills against other styles safe and realistically. please check my videos and comment. cheers and keep up the path.
As with any good traditional system we cover most bases...We have lots of chin na or grappling but our grabs are often done in conjunction with strikes to pressure points or the grab itself is seperating muscles and inflicting great pain. This is of course for higher level students. we have a few throws and sweeps but the emphasis is more on striking with our phoenix eye fists...
thanks for the quick reply. you guys must do some serious body conditioning to perform those chin na techniques. you should put up some videos of your body conditioning to show these " martial artists " with rude comments what real training is about.
I have very little knowledge about White Crane. I'm only very interested since it's the forefather of my style - Goju Ryu. But I'd say these guys are really nailing it. They mix in blocks and parries that seem to pertain to those in White Crane forms. And as far as punching goes, they look fast and precise to me.
As in almost every martial art...as soon as it's sparring/fighting time, tradition usually goes out the window and western style boxing jabs, swings and stances take lead. This could be from conditioning and mixed training. I couldn't say it's a natural way of fighting(even though it feels like it) because martial artists in the East didn't use it. It's strange, the most natural way to 'put up your dukes' was unnatural because of tradition, and now it's natural because of tradition. Irony.
Although i agree with your comment, this is not the case here. Flying crane actually resembles western boxing in that our principal punches are straight line pivots along the center. We have few hook. Rather we have cuts or chops Which are slaps in friendly sparring. Our stances have a closed groin too which boxing does not. So I would say its rather that these 2 styles are similar , not that we cant use our kung fu...Ther are at least 20 identical techniques such as: parry, brush off...
@blueprophet9 I agree, but I tend to use many kicks in when I fight, cuz I used to do tae kwon do. Although that style emphasizes high kicks, I dont do them that often that just leaves you wide open, I prefer low kicks.
How often is the crane's beak actually used in white crane? In Kung Fu movies, the white crane guy uses it all the time. I realize of course kung fu movie fight scenes and choreography are far from real life. What is the difference between crane's beak and the mantis hook? What's the minimum amount of time one should take for conditioning their fingers for striking? Ah, sorry if I asked too many questions.
Crane's beak is a basic move although the fingers must be trained extensively. Here you wont see it's use as it's quite dangerous. One needs to train quite a bit to develop hard fingers. It is used to strike soft points. There are several variations of cranes beak. The movies do in fact over exagerrate it's use. We use phoenix eye fist to a much greator extent as it is easy to train and therefore even beginner's can use it .Crane's beak in flying crane is more to hit not grab.
Youre point is well taken. We do some throws and your correct a throw would be quite appropriate. My point was that a groin strike was faster than a grapple and perhaps more effective. Here we see stylistic preferences when it comes to techniques. We like groin strikes but indeed a throw would be quite acceptable...
If you want to learn more about our style there is a well constructed book on flying crane. And if you still have questions your welcome to touch hands. In hope that this concluded this pointless discussion.
I actually found your comments on my white crane funny! Its one thing to comment on a system that you dont know, but its quite another thing to insult a practitioner personally! I dont care much for your input on my way of fighting, but I dont take kindly to people insulting my shifu.
My white crane fighters refuse to incorporate anything from any system. Many martial art have similar looking techniques. The devil is in the details . MY response was divided into 3 because of the word count. Please learn more about traditional kung fu before being so rude. Your lack of martial knowledge and ethics is obvious. This being said I wish you all the best and I hope you can learn more and reflect upon how one should spend one's time.
A proper pak da would jam the opponent's fist to his own body ( you know that right)but white crane's "shi gse so" (which I assume you understand... sap gee so in cantonese) cuts it down... I would explain more but I feel no need to as you are not my student. Are you so ill informed as to be believe only one system uses grabbing techniques or front kicks or what a boxer would call a parry and we call tui lan?
Manners are important in martial arts as they reflect upon one and one's teacher. You sir have none. One and only answer to your troll: None of my white crane students ever learned nor want to learn wing chun even though i did study that system for 15 years.

Yes, I have worked in situations where the groin shot is a "go-to" play, but in the instance on video, the arm was trapped.
The knees he was about to apply WERE pretty much useless the way he was using them, so I see why you stopped the spar there.
Your instruction is top notch as your students do have very good control, movement and intent. It is a pleasure to see good kungfu out there.
