  • It's the same when walking past a car that's just pulled up. I hate doing it because you expect the passenger getting out to just slam the door open and take you out aha. Isn't really related to this video but it's nearly happened to me before.

  • meant to pass parked cars with 1Mt gap

  • i tell you what winds me up is cyclists riding two abreast legally they can but it is so arogant and dangerous for other road users

  • And he missed you with his door? Silly old fart, missed a great opportunity right there!

  • Well it's the same thing if u driveing a car...ppl never look around when they get out of their car...

  • i nearly had some dozy idiot do tht on my motorbik @ 60mph- he was pulled over o a dual carriageway with no hazards

  • It's always a good idea to be 2ft out at all times, it gives you somewhere to go when the idiots get too close. They just want us in the gutters cos its more important that they get to where they're going 5 seconds earlier!

  • @acme181169 I really is that small a distance, I was passed by my brother in his car doing around 90mph (he said) ten miles away from our home when I was learning to ride a motorcycle and i was pottering along at 45mph on my 125cc, I pulled into our road as he was backing onto the drive. I also used to achieve 120mpg on that thing.

I just wish more people were aware of the miniscule difference to their journey time their elevated speed makes.

  • I was driving along Great Western Road heading toward Anniesland Cross from Knightswood and a cyclist was knocked off the was you could have been. He was okay but it was nasty. I was the only person who stopped to make sure he was okay.

  • What if "the door zone" is the only place to cycle. I live in Caronto (Toronto) and you literally need to have jedi powers to avoid skin+concrete.

Fuck motorists though, they always have some shitty excuse for not looking in their mirrors after almost killing you. Will it take my corpse on their windshield before they realize there foolishness?

I have jaywalkers glued to their crackberries telling me to watch out for riding my bike in there path.

Seriously, fuck everyone that doesnt bike.

  • too bad not all cars have Lambo style doors that swing up and forward.... that was a real novel idea for cyclists... wonder why that got discontinued...

  • Great video.

It's good practice to, like this video shows, stay out of door zones, eventhough an accident between a car door and a cyclist can be blamed on the person opening the car door.

A door prize is no prize I want.

  • I always check my mirrors before opening the car door, so I won't be hurting any cyclists, or getting my doors ripped off by cars :)

  • good vid, i understand the safety aspect, but that wasnt even close. you had plenty of time.

  • Exactly. I wasn't close. I was just highlighting why I cycle away from parked cars. If I cycled in the door zone, this could have been serious.

  • This video shows how staying out of the "door zone" will keep a cyclist safe regardless of how "close" they are from an opening door or how much "time" they have to react. Those aspects are only relevant if a cyclist is in the "door zone".

So, the video isn't suppose to show a case where a cyclist is in the "door zone" and almost had an accident.

  • this happened to me when i was on my way to college...

  • This happened to me a few years ago. Cycling down a hill at 35MPH in a 40, car door opens and just clips my handle bars and sent me over the top and onto the road. The car coming in the opposite direction crashed in to a buss stop. I got a new bike and helmet, 3 months off work, and the girl who crashed into the buss stop got a new car and Leeds got a new buss stop. All on the dozy guy who opened his car door without looking. It must have cost his insurance a small fortune.

  • Wow. You're lucky to be alive. I'm suprised no one was killed with all that damage. 3 month recovery must mean some pretty bad injuries. I hope you're better.

    Safe riding man!

  • magnatom, Excellent video! It explains simply why the door zone is NOT the place to cycle. Mostly, I'll use the secondary position, but I use the primary when needed. The problem is that the primary position really irritates the ~90% of motorists who know virtually nothing about cycling. (As usual, the Dunning-Kruger effect applies)

  • Unfortunately , local councils put cycle lanes well within the 'doorzone' when lanes are constructed with parking on the inside (left) and moving traffic on the right. Local councils ... as dangerous as drunk drivers.

  • The other day I was walking an a car just stopped next to a sharp blind bend in the road, centre of lane [about three feet out], the driver's door was thrown open and a woman got out letter in hand. I said 'it's not very close to the kerb'. She said 'it's all right, I won't be a second'. She was going to post a letter. She took alot longer than a second.

I'm convinced she's a strong candidate for dooring a cyclist and causing accidents.

I was speechless! What a stupid cow!

  • Me and my mate were walking down the street not long ago, we walked round a bend, and a car had parked, about 1 metre from the kerb. We both couldn't believe it, it was practically filling the lane, but there was no one in the car.

  • I hope certain motorists who claim cyclists should ride as far left as possible to 'be out of their way' take note.

  • my thoughts entirley - good example magnatom

  • Nice one Tomster!

Highway code does tell cyclists to remain one car-door's width away from parked traffic.

These days I've gone back to keeping a whistle between my lips when out on my bike... it works well.

    Be safe. :-)

  • The door zone is not a good zone!

Have you ever been hit before? I came really close once.

  • lol. 2 doors open at once
