  • I started on center marimba for my indoor drumline. and if we treated our stuff like this, we'd be kicked out. without a doubt.

you can't play an instrument well if you don't give it the love it needs

  • I'm just in high school, and i've only been playing for a year, but i would never treat any instrument with that sort of disrespect. I've only been playing mallets for a little less than a year, but i would never treat my own mallets that way, and i would never treat anyone else's mallets that way either.

Even sound quality is what you need, and mallets that aren't so harsh.

Technique is everything, i didn't learn anything musical on any mallet instrument until a couple months of playing.

  • @TimmLaguna If I'd use someone else's instruments I would of course treat them any way the owner wanted me to. You may treat yours with as much respect as you see fit, and should I for some reason use your stuff I would do the same. But my own stuff I will treat any god damn way I want. And quit bullshitting me about not being able to play an instrument if you don't treat it with love; there are countless great musicians whom have completely trashed their equipment.

  • @Mardrommen I feel bad for the instrument, i'm sure it could be played beautifully, but it'll never have the chance

  • @TimmLaguna I can hear it weep at night. I'm such a horrible person.

  • @Mardrommen yup

  • 1) Thats a mallet, not a drumstick. Treat it with some respect. What you did at the start is not cool.

    2) Please respect the Vibraphone too. don't throw your mallet on it like what you did at the end.

    3) Be a little more professional, don't wear a watch (or any wrist accessories) when playing percussion.

    4) nothing wrong with your rhythm. Its your pulse that's horrible. know the difference.

5)get your fundamentals right. no amount of practice will help if you cant even get the grip right.

  • @timmyplankster

    1) It is indeed a mallet. And since mallets are not living beings, I'm sure it will not get upset if I don't treat it with the proper respect. And I personally still thinks what I did at the start is pretty cool.

    2) Just like the mallets, the vibraphone won't get insulted by how I treat it. Also, after treating it like that for over 5 years it still works, I'll let you know.

  • @Mardrommen you say you've been treating this vibraphone like this for 5 years. well, i have to admit that you have learned a lot in those 5 years. /sarcasm off

  • @LeoW2012 Observe the date of the comment in which I stated I had been treating the vibraphone like that for 5 years. Observe the date of this video. Substract the years of the comment's date with the years of the video's date. Draw your conclusions.

  • @Mardrommen yeah, well, comment 2 months ago (2011) - video uploaded 2006: 2011-2006, 5 years. correct me if i'm wrong

  • @LeoW2012 Nope, that is correct! Your confident way of saying it, though, suggests you don't consider this information anything new. If so, I can only assume you actually meant I have improved during the 5 years following the posting of this video, and that your statement really wasn't sarcastic (I couldn't tell whether the "/sarcasm off" was sarcasticly meant itself). And if so, I need to ask how you could possibly know how good I am at vibraphone nowadays?

  • @Mardrommen haha, well i think we both got there something wrong. i meant that you still haven't learned how to treat your vibraphone when you still just throw your mallets onto it like that. everyone should treat an instrument with respect, whether if you're an professional or not and whether if it's your own or instrument or a friend's. i don't know how you're playing nowadays, and i didn't want to say anything about your current playing level. sorry 'bout that

  • @LeoW2012 I see, good we got that sorted out :P But I have to disagree with you. It's smart to not treat an instrument in such a way that it risks decreasing it's performance, if you want it to sound good. However, I don't think my treatment of the vibraphone will have any noticable effect of that kind. To second that opinion, my father who is a proffessional percussionist claims he treats his equipment pretty much the same way, and they're still good enough to use in a proffessional orchestra.

  • @timmyplankster 3) I was not payed for this, hence I am not a professional, so why should I act like one? I also reckon that even professionals needs to keep track of time so why would you forbid them to wear watches?

    4) I now know the difference, thank you. Also I'm beginning to suspect that my "pulse" was not as horrible as it seems, cause it looks like the video was unintentionally speed up at some places which might result in it appearing as if my pulse was unstable.

  • @timmyplankster 5) If I ever intended to become a decent vibraphonist I would probably have looked up the proper grip, but as of now I have barely played vibraphone seriously since this video was shot 5 years ago.

Thank you for your remarks, I hope my responses has been of use or amusement to you! Have a nice day :)

  • i hate you

  • @Jcc477 You don't know anything about me except for that which you can see in this video and read from my comment responses, yet you hate me. You're just very emotional, aren't you?

  • @Mardrommen yes

  • @Mardrommen I hate you too

  • @darkshinmoteuchi Oh bummer!

  • @Mardrommen So true! ;)

  • @Mardrommen i also hate you!

  • @Senii17 Well jesus christ, here I'm going along, minding my own business, and suddenly everyone hates me? I guess I should feel flattered that I've managed to touch people on such a deep emotional level, although I'm not sure what I've done to deserve the honour.

  • @Mardrommen I don't hate you! i love you. :P haha just kidding i dont even know you. but atleast i dont hate you. :P

  • @gamertooth17 You know, after all the flaming I've got so far that really brightens my day, thank you, and I don't hate you either! :)

  • @Mardrommen lol welcome. i dont hate many people. except trolls.

  • @gamertooth17 You hate trolls? Wow, you've got to have quite fun on the internet then :P

  • @Mardrommen indeed. :P

  • what are the notes

  • @DamStraight24 There are a lot of notes, can't write them all down here. But it starts with an "E", try to figure the rest put by ear if you can, that's what I did :)

  • lolololololol. your lack of rhythm makes me laugh

  • @mynameaborat993 I'm glad to be able to bring such joy into your life, just think about all the happiness you would've missed out on if I had played it better!

  • @Mardrommen lol, didn't expect you to reply like that.

  • @mynameaborat993 I'm just full of surprises, aren't I?

  • @cleac Why don't you post some of your master pieces and show us how's it really done.

  • shake them haters off

  • @enigma3200 mmm!

  • wow man that sucked

  • @christiancastillo93 You are probably right, but let me just ask you; why would you tell me such a thing? Just stating that I'm doing something poorly will only result in me getting sad (if anything) and probably lose motivation to improva my skills. It would be better if you would just tell me that I need to improve, but that I could probably do so with practice. That would make me happier and the world would become a better place. So think about that :)

  • @Mardrommen well what about you just get better and delete the videos that you suck on and post better ones cause if you have videos like this ppl will just make fun of you and show more ppl the vid and you will be a laughing stock well you already are since ive shown this vid to ppl lol

  • @christiancastillo93 Yeah, I'm well aware of that. But to tell the truth, I find it a little entertaining to argue with people who makes negative comments on this video, and I'm also keeping it for nostalgic reasons. So even if I would post an "improved" video I would probably keep this one anyway.

  • @Mardrommen Clearly not. It would actually make you stop to write a comment that manages to insult him back.

It could also make you reflect on your music and motivate you to continue practicing until people couldn't say your playing sucked. Then, you could come back on to YouTube, internationally renowned as a vibraphone player, and show all the haters the beautiful butterfly you have become. The world, at least for you, would become a place of wonder that you could express musically.

  • @SilenceBeGolden Not sure exactly what you mean, but it sounded wise.

  • It is a vibraphone he just not using the pedal

  • @Patrick78912 Precisely.

  • better than what i can do lol

  • That's not a vibraphone

  • @Wierdoinc I can ensure you, it is a vibraphone.

  • I'm pretty sure that's a xylophone bro.

  • @Wierdoinc And I am completely sure that is a vibraphone. First of all, it has a vibrato pedal, which I believe only vibraphones has. Or maybe xylophones can have them to, but either way, my father is a professional percussionist and he claims it to be a vibraphone. It is very unlikely that he would be mistaken.

  • Oh, my mistake. I didn't realize you weren't playing without the pedal.

  • @Wierdoinc Well then, glad we solved that disagreement :)

  • "Verry Bad Trip" XD

  • Haha, sweet, a lot of people has complained about the pedal, the timing and the sound quality, but you're actually the first to complain about my little trick with the mallet in the beginning. I personally thought it was kind of cool, but I suppose taste varies :)

  • DING!

  • Gratz!

  • Might I suggest recording it again, but using the pedal as well?

  • I have been considering the very same, I might just do it if I can find the time (or motivation). I skipped the pedal in this video because the camera's sound-recording engine couldn't handle the sound, thus making it sound awful, but I have a new camera now so it might work now.

  • do more than one note at a time

  • Never! :D

  • lol, awesome XD

  • Thank you x)

  • I have no idea what you just said, but thanks anyway :)

  • He asked if you have the notes to the tune.

  • Oh, thank you!

  • Though I'll probably won't be able to answer hi anyway :P

  • I agree... three years ago, you had no sense of rhythm. XD And I would say that your stickings are a bit primitive then too.

  • Haha, thanks :P Vibraphone has never been my main instrument, so I'm kinda just playing in whatever way feels most natural at the moment :)

  • practice with a metronome please, the notes are good but you need too tight this up a little bit

  • The video is over three years old, I've got better sense of rythm now.

  • did u learn the 4 mallet part for this? its kinda fun and u missed some little notes o.o

  • Nope, I have not learned the 4 mallet part, I only play with 2 mallets :P Oh, where did I miss?

  • nvm i thought u missed a note but it was just the rythme that made me thinkxD im srry :I

  • what kind of vibraphone is this?

  • It's called "Master M", made in Sweden.

  • 0:21-0:29 man i still can't get that! glad you did! maybe i can see if i can replay the vid 4000 times and try to copy the notes lol

  • You don't know what notes it is? It's E, C, D, B, C, A, G# (paus) E, C, D, B, C, E, A, G#.

The first A and G# are lower and the second A and G# are higher.

  • aw thanks!

  • No problem :)

  • Say what??? I need this on sheet. Coud I trouble you to find a way to do tha for me? It would actually bring my grade in percussion fromand A to and A+

Can't wait for all district tryouts

  • You want me to write the song down, or what did you mean? If you want the notes, you can probably just google for them.

  • couldnt find em' on google. tell me where you got the sheet music and if its posible plese draw the lines out for me and type them n stuff

  • Actually, I didn't use a sheet myself, I learned it by ear, but only the melody. Hence, I don't know if I can help you by drawing a sheet since I don't know what they should look like.

  • Waste of time!

  • No, SUCCESSFULLY wasted time :)

  • LOL

  • You're typing, you're typing LOL, you're typing but you're not laughing!

  • you shouldnt post this video if already know its not very good (i watched your information on this video)

  • Well, seeing that I had been playing it the whole day trying to hit all the notes right, I thought it would've been a waste of time if I didn't post it. Simply :)

  • lol... ?

  • Ah, somebody shoot me

  • Sure thing :)

  • good stuff, I like this.

  • You should work on alternating your sticking.

    What happened to the pedal?

Also, try "Stick Control for the Modern Drummer"

But.. that was pretty cool! Did you figure it out yourself? I can't play by ear at all...

  • The pedal sounded horrible when recorded, so I skipped it. And yes, I figured it out by ear :)

  • I'm trying to learn Jazz improv on vibes right now and it's so difficult! Improv/playing by ear/etc is a skill I've never had, so I commend you for that.

Learned any interesting solos lately? I'm assuming you've been playing for at least a few years by now

  • It was good, I know you said so many people told you that you have no rhythm but to help you out, you can use a metronome to practice.

    It was good though.

  • Thanks for the tips, though the video is 2,5 years old and I can honestly say my sense of rhythm has improved since then ;)

  • no rhythm....

  • Thank you, I know, I've been told so about 50 times already.

  • 151 wont hurt ;)

  • Hehe, no I suppose not ^^

  • good job

  • Thank you!

  • :3 cute.

  • Indeed.

  • I have to say that I don't think this is a vibe.

    :/

Then again I've only been playing vibes for 4 months or something.

But I must agree on the mallets. I looked in awe when you threw them. My pit director would KILL ME xD

  • Yes it is a vibe, my father is a percussionist and he can confirm it :P I don't understand why he should be so mad, they don't brake that easily, they're made of wood after all, not glass.

  • My school vibe is terribly out of tune; I really wouldn't know what one REALLY sounds like.

But we ARE getting our borrowed one within a few weeks! :D

And the mallets I have are super delicate wood. They warned me about it when they gave me the sticks. My director works at Vic Firth and would know.

  • Super delicate wood or not, I can assure you from personal experience that you can throw around those mallets all you want without breaking them. Or maybe I just got mallets with better quality than yours, who knows?

  • i really feel sorry for the poster of this vid. people who post videos like this get retards that think they're pro at the instrument because they're the section leader for their high school band to come and critique them.

  • uhmm, you get a better sound if you play in the middle of the bar, i know it was just for kicks but, yea-just a recomendation, and you shouldnt throw mallets around unless you just like spending money on mallets..

  • I don't really know where I played, and mallets don't brake that easily, if they did I wouldn't let my cat play with them.

  • i thought he was getting fine sound. he wasn't hitting any nodal points or anything. and the way i see it, he can do whatever the hell he wants to do with his mallets.

  • ...

  • Absolutely Amazing.

I think i like it better than 1,000,000 Avril Lavignes.

  • ugh. Tempo = Crap. Overall technique = Crap.

And there's this crazy thing on the bottom of the vibe called a PETAL. Yeah. Try using that on half notes. And count. And get better mallets. And get a thoery book. Yeah.

  • I know the tempo is crap, I know the technique is crap, the video is over a year old and I'm a lot better now and everytime I see this I feel sick becouse it sucks so much. No need to point that out. The reason why I didn't use the petal is becouse it sounded terrible when recorded, so I skipped it. I don't have any other mallets and I don't plan to spend any money on new ones couse I don't play that much. I can't see the point with a theory book really.

  • That's youtube. If it's not perfect, it's total crap.

  • Amen.

  • which, it shouldn't be that way..............

  • lol. greenturtlecove. you're an idiot. seriously. you're a total dumbass. thats like saying to someone who's new to playing trumpet or any other instrument that they're total crap at it. of course they are, dumbshit, they're new. NEW.

  • ugh. . ... ..lol

I take that as an insult that I (or the poster) need(s) to be told what happened in this video..as if I didn't watch it?

  • couldnt be worse!

  • t' was nice.. I suggest practice with metronome.. there are some slight errors in the tempo..

  • pedal much?

    you should count.

  • I agree. It sounds more like a marimba than the vibes.

  • rofl. doesnt sound anything like a marimba.

  • you should probably learn to hold the stick s right also

  • yeah to help improve you're timing, you should count

  • Just searching vibraphone works, and came upon this. Nice job with it, but I'd love to see you work on your timing and pauses. Hopefully after a year you've improved-- you've got the ability, now it just takes practice.

  • You wear your watch on your right hand too? I thought I was the only idiot who did that. (Are you right-handed too?)

Makes me wish I had access to a vibraphone to play...my school only has a xylophone and a glockenspiel.

  • I'm right handed, yes :P

  • not bad

  • Lol, nice exit.

  • cool , Is it just like the pianos notes?

  • Where's the sustain pedal???

  • tempo dude...other than that pretty cool

  • hahaha LOOOSSERRR!!!!

  • ahahaha!! i did play this instrument in grade 1 to grade 6 ahahaha!!! hum.. every body of my school did play this instrument...

  • the tempo is like fucked up. Is it the video quality?

  • i remember when i used to play like that i consider myself Awsome a vibes now. That's what other people tell me. Just don't forge dude REBOUND and sound quality. Keep it up dude.

  • Ooh... we have one of those things. Vibraphones... yeah. But I can't say I'm good at it. My cousin's prety nifty. I should put a video up of her, she uses three mallets. But you were awesome. And you do the swirly twirly thing with the mallets... pretty nifty.

  • I know that. I really don't know what I was thinking now that I watch it after I puplished it, but it seems like I didn't realize it when I shot it.

  • we know that you can do bitchin' stick tricks, and you know all the notes, but you really need to work on your rhythm. it's utterly vomitous.

  • your lack of rythm hurts my feelings. you play some parts waaaaay too fast. settle down, christ.

  • I noticed that after I published the video. I never actully watch it again, couse I think it truly sucks.

  • jamacin tetris...ya man red stripe its beeeyaaaa hurayyyy beeeyaaa

  • Wow you own a vibrahome at home!!

  • Yep

  • ha ha your a noobie :) keep up the good work

  • Indeed I'm.

  • Awesome.

  • I used vibrato first, but it didn't sound very well in the movie.

  • needs some sustain and some vibrato maybe

  • great :)

  • sweet.. :)

  • cool i loved the ending too when u just threw the sticks lol and by the way is that played the sme on piano like has it got the same things like a e d g b c if u no wot i mean? so if i knew how 2 play it on that would it be the same on piano?im probably not making any sense lol =)

  • Yeah, it's the same as on a piano, but you use the sticks to hit the metal....things instead of playing with your fingers.

I didn't expect that so many people would like this. Thanks!

  • that was great

  • don't be so hard on yourself dude this wasn't bad

  • Try a duet! Get someone to do the left hand!

  • nice, but also funny

  • oh shit tou are good;)

  • did somebody drop you on your head when you were a baby? the dude can't even count!

  • Easy, I'm much better nowadays. I'm thinking about making a new version, when I can find the time. Actually, I think I was able to play that in the correct timing back then as well, but I was tired, I had played the whole day trying to get it right and I thought that it would have to do.

  • ah. I see...I was actually thinking of posting one, too

  • vibraphone rulez and tetris much more ;D

  • sweet

  • I liked it. :D

  • you should do the left hand with two sticks so you could play the simple back and forth part while playing the melody with the right hand...It wouldn't be that much more difficult...

  • I'm not all that good with vibraphone, so I made a simple version of tetris.
