he shows xenia type places with youth creating their own hipster culture. this is shown here in the clothing etc. but also the soundtrack, which is why in one scene we have doom metal(sleep), and in another scene (that involves gun against a childhead) we have madonnas like a prayer. but it all fits like a puzzle with each piece made of a diffrent material (use that in your essay) i love the kubrick influence in the visceral angles. love the casual way shows life can always make your skin crawl.
no words except Orbison's lyrics. its a documentary about my childhood. its about me. no one else. I love this movie more and it hurts me more. I got no choice at all.
This is a sad movie as its intention. But it show the world or who ever take 80 minutes of their day to watch this shit that life is a fucked up thing.
everyone needs to shut the fuck up about the meaning of the moive. harmony was obviously high the entire time he shot it (and he admitted to this). sometimes shit just happens. the movie is only to marveled at because hes captured so many minds and forced them to obsess over something the creator of didnt even but as much thought into.
@COBRARocky - you have clearly missed the point of this film by a wide margin if you think anything about it 'represents hope'. You seem to be trying to read some kind of Hollywood moral into something that's trying to be as anti-Hollywood as possible. A film like this doesn't need to end with some kind of hope or redemption--it is what it is. Korine wanted to show real life, as horrifying as it is--that's why he used so few actual actors.
everyone in this movie looks fuckn WEIRD!!! at the end... is that suppost to be the tornado coming in? thereby killing every character we just saw throughout the movie?
i wouldn't go so far as to say it's the best film of the century. tha't a LITTLE dramatic. it was pretty good. it was interesting. it was very sad. everyone was being taken advantage of. it doesn't take much to be able to look beyond the tragedy of life though and see the ups between the downs. life isn't all animal cruelty, rape and poverty.
I always consider the ending of this movie when the bunny boy shows the cat at the end. I find it would have been more powerful to just end with that. Helen singing at the end just makes me laugh.
this movie reminds me of napoleon dynamite...only much more surreal and sinister...nobody wins except for the old lady who gets offed by the cat poachers

Gummo is, was, remains, and always will be garbage. This is my opinion, Now if you like low-budget, off the wall films, then be my guest and amuse yourself. In my opinion and in the vast majority of critics at the time it was garbage. It has some sort of strange cult following that I don't understand. I think its appeal is to that underbelly of people to whom losing and watching losing is somehow winning..... Somehow.
Actually, this film is a commentary on America's forgotten lower class. This scene is basically saying that, the best thing that ever happened to Xenia Ohio was a tornado. Its a dose of reality, that most big city americans don't see. That their country is f*cked. Their american dream is a fraud. Its about living with no reason to live other than to keep breathing. Maybe you like blockbusters? OR you like REAL... drama?
Its a straight view on a twisted world. I guess that makes for a bad movie. "In your opinion" of course. And opinions are a dime a dozen. Free on sunday and inescapable.
Hold it...The best thing that happened to Xenia was the tornado??? 34 dead, 2,000 injured, and half the town wiped out? That's a pretty skewed definition of "best." Secondly, I don't believe that America is f*****. Xenia showed a lot of grit and determination to get up after that kind of clobbering. To me, that is more "American" than all the CEO's and crooked politicians combined.
@traumatek also to put stock images of a tornado or animals or etc to a 40 or 50's song is an art form!!!i find this movies ending an the one of dc.strange love the best in eny movies!!!
lol. its just funny, because you KNOW somewhere out there in the world these people exist. they're out there somethwere... shooting dead cats in the rain.
whats the name of the song thats playing when Tummler and Soloman are breaking into the Queer Catkiller's house?? i cant figure it out when i look through the soundtrack.
I saw the DVD in a garage sale for 35 cents. No kidding. I thought it was highly appropriate except it was priced about 30 cents too high. What a piece of Hollywood intellectual fascist crap. But let's go get a Latte and discuss it over our New York Times, shall we? I mean we ARE so superior and cute. Aren't we?
35 cents and, in your case, an entire paragraph of a youtube comment. So since you yourself chose to discuss it (like "teh liberalz elitist" enemy)- grande or venti, sir?
Insulting to Xenia Ohio-Insulting to the state of Ohio, and just plainly a piece of shit film made by a bunch of wannabe's who will turn into neverwere's. Harmony is hardly a name to go down as legend in the film industry. Film wasn't even shot in Xenia. Losers, all of them.
It's an idiotic, stupid an totally innacurate picture of southwest Ohio. But I guess you're right; When the great movies of the century are numbered 1-10, why of course Gummo will be among them! Stupid me! It's so obvious! YES! I've seen the light! G-U-M-M-O!
