he shows xenia type places with youth creating their own hipster culture. this is shown here in the clothing etc. but also the soundtrack, which is why in one scene we have doom metal(sleep), and in another scene (that involves gun against a childhead) we have madonnas like a prayer. but it all fits like a puzzle with each piece made of a diffrent material (use that in your essay) i love the kubrick influence in the visceral angles. love the casual way shows life can always make your skin crawl.

@COBRARocky - you have clearly missed the point of this film by a wide margin if you think anything about it 'represents hope'. You seem to be trying to read some kind of Hollywood moral into something that's trying to be as anti-Hollywood as possible.  A film like this doesn't need to end with some kind of hope or redemption--it is what it is. Korine wanted to show real life, as horrifying as it is--that's why he used so few actual actors.

i wouldn't go so far as to say it's the best film of the century. tha't a LITTLE dramatic. it was pretty good. it was interesting. it was very sad. everyone was being taken advantage of. it doesn't take much to be able to look beyond the tragedy of life though and see the ups between the downs. life isn't all animal cruelty, rape and poverty.

I always consider the ending of this movie when the bunny boy shows the cat at the end. I find it would have been more powerful to just end with that. Helen singing at the end just makes me laugh.

Gummo is, was, remains, and always will be garbage. This is my opinion, Now if you like low-budget, off the wall films, then be my guest and amuse yourself. In my opinion and in the vast majority of critics at the time it was garbage. It has some sort of strange cult following that I don't understand. I think its appeal is to that underbelly of people to whom losing and watching losing is somehow winning..... Somehow.

Actually, this film is a commentary on America's forgotten lower class. This scene is basically saying that, the best thing that ever happened to Xenia Ohio was a tornado. Its a dose of reality, that most big city americans don't see. That their country is f*cked. Their american dream is a fraud. Its about living with no reason to live other than to keep breathing. Maybe you like blockbusters? OR you like REAL... drama?

Hold it...The best thing that happened to Xenia was the tornado??? 34 dead, 2,000 injured, and half the town wiped out? That's a pretty skewed definition of "best." Secondly, I don't believe that America is f*****. Xenia showed a lot of grit and determination to get up after that kind of clobbering. To me, that is more "American" than all the CEO's and crooked politicians combined.
