  • Whyd you take down the website? :(

  • I know who that is, it's Hillary Clinton!

  • I love the eraser effect :)

  • Interesting copying technique. Thanks for your patient instruction. peace

  • Hi,

Thank you so much for giving so much of your time to teach us how to draw - the easy way! You are a wonderful teacher, and cover everything thoroughly. I have just enrolled in an Art Course, and you have laid the foundation stones wonderfully for me.

    THANK YOU!!!!

  • you are very kind to take time to teach us to draw. in particular I can say I learned a lot, you're a great teacher.

    thank yo so much.

  • Well, never thought drawing takes so much measurments and mathematics :(.

  • @0Angelfromheaven0 usually it doesnt. every1 has their own methods

  • @0Angelfromheaven0 don't let that discourage you. practice makes it easier and easier, so you can just eyeball/give an accurate guess as to where things must go.

  • where is ep .7?

  • I have a queston I watched all of your measuring videos but I did I drawing I would like to transfer onto a bigger canvas... since triangles are regular shapes ur methods of measuring are easy... but with my drawing being so irregular... how do i transfer it onto a bigger scale onto my canvas? thanks ^_^

  • thank you very very much ...i must say you SIR.... thank you ones again

  • okay so i watched all the episodes and i dont understand how im going to be able to draw a photograph. the videos are great but how are you going to print out 3 different versions of the same pic like with the 3 step thing. im not going to beable to do dark parts first then measure the white then add mid tones. where do you start?? im not going to blur out my pictures and do these steps. how do you draw a portrait that is just a portrait not different versions?? can someone help me

  • Does anyone know what happened to his website? I can't find it OR the exercises.

  • @gogoteca yeah idk either. if you find out could you let me kno

  • @dumbblondebabie101 sure, but I haven't found anything yet xD... It's like it just vanished-

  • @gogoteca yeah i kno it sucks

  • buen trabajo

  • I already know by the lips and beauty mark that it's Marilyn Monroe

  • This was really wonderful. I've been drawing cartoon/comic book style faces for years, and I've always wanted to learn how to draw real faces, but I could never get the features to match up, no matter how I adjusted. Your tips on triangulation and seeing the values as shapes help a lot.

I'm going to go try this exercise with other photos as well.

  • i really appreciate you takin ur time to do this!!!!

    brilliant!

    xo

  • thaaaanx alot for your hard work . followed every step & i like the result alot

  • Thanks a lot !!

I enjoyed your video's and have learned a lot from them.

Another think i must thank you because i made first best Portrait just by looking at the pic !!!

That was great !!! once i was done sketching it and saw it i was really amazed !!!!

    thanks again !!!

  • i frikin love your draws n tutorials, and i make draws, so this helped me to get a lot more profesional, but there are a few things:

    1) most of my draws are not at the same size, i always make them bigger, so what do you recommend?

2)i always copy them from the computer, so now i'll need to imprint them if i want a better result

3)what about draws with color? i'll need to change the image to black and white and then copy it?

    thanks anyway :D!

  • Artists throughout the ages have used mechanical means to help them - in the Renaissance period there was a perspective machine, nowadays some use a projector. The idea is to experiment with what works for YOU. One man's meat is anothers' poison.

  • (continued from below)

I suggest reading 'Mastery' by George Leonard to fools such as below. Thanks for your videos EAA! ;)

  • a xerox copy/

    lol

  • @ricordeon Exactly. Art should by about emotion, a story, an impression and not some Xerox copy...geesh

  • oh comon!

So maybe this isn't art, but it just shows how well he's mastered drawing.

Artists learn to draw realistically before they express themselves.

  • There are many artists who never depart from this process and stick to very mechanical methods of producing pictures from photos that people unfamiliar with the process would find to be spectacular. It's an easy way to get attention and money for your work. But the point of the video is to serve as an exercise, and the artists with potential will use it to train their eye and become less and less reliant on such techniques and that's when their works will begin to take on a life of their own.

  • i so agree with you :) :D

  • @jfrcks Well I think it depends would you consider the Mona Lisa art? How about The Thinker? In my opinion yes. Art is relative to the artist. If there was an artist who could take a photo and draw that photo in full color in such a way that you couldn't tell the difference between the two. You wouldn't call him an artist?

  • merci beaucoup ce cours est vraiment tres utile ^^

  • the portrait looks better than the photoshop version

  • I'm so amazed by this! And to think I thought it was a dog when you started out... ^^;

  • very very very cool!! thx for this tutorial

  • THIS IS IT, say no to photoshop and yes to the pencil

  • @arncj18 I like pencil drawings too, but there is no reason to shun photoshop. Why not apply what you learn in traditional drawing to digital painting as well?

  • @arncj18 Why?

  • @SCAREDBANANA because ur not gonna always have electricity:))

  • @arncj18 Okay, but what do you have against electronic art?

  • It`s Merrrlin.

  • I didn't know wizards were so pretty =)

  • lol, the poster above my last comment said, "it's merrrlin", like Merlin the wizard =)

  • @tropicallanterns i know thats why i lolled

  • They have a spell for that. I was under Marilyn's

  • Thank you, man! You helped me soooo lot. Thak you! Thank you to share your knowledge. Now I am going to sell my drawings and make money :-)

Can you also teach us how to paint? I think the process should not be so different.Whatr do you think?

  • @DethklokK0 Don´t be dunce dude! Youtube is nota English site, and if you can not get Spanish, well so sorry!

  • @linkf1 lol im joking

  • @linkf1 Yeah it is. Youtube is owned by Google. Where is Google Headquarters?

    California...so

  • @linkf1 Actually Youtube is primarily an English website.

  • @linkf1

But that's WRONG, you moron. Youtube is, infact, an English website, and while you can speak Spanish all you want, people are perfectly justified in complaining at you about it.

  • @WriterUnit32 Well asshole, it is perfectly justified that we can insult you in your mother tongue! So fuck off dude! Learn Spanish you moron, instead of complaining! Because of people like you this world is not a better place!

  • I thank you, watching and listening to you vids have really made me into a better artist. God bless...

  • What he did is called rasterbating

  • Good instructional program series, a bit slow for me, but paced well for beginners. Suggestion, when planning a demonstration, allow the piece size to accommodate a mat within your standard size frame. Example: 12"x16" art and 2" mat fits a 16"x20" frame. After all the work, lets protect it.

  • your videos have made me a stronger artist thank you

  • thank you for patiently teaching us clearly and detailed for the beginners..you're really great!!more powers!!god bless..

  • These videos you have made filled me with fascination and also made me find something deep within me what I've been searching for for a long time. The fact that this was the last episode made me quite sad. Thank you for your time and I wish you all the best in your life! =)

  • Great Job man. One question. How did u separate the original image to all those tonal range layers?

  • Photoshop I asume.

  • i guess with an ordinary graphic programm or am i wrong to say this

  • With "posterize" on photoshop, I think.

  • JL thanks.

to the rest, yeah, i'm assuming it's photoshop. the posterize is one that i haven't tried yet. but the effect looks like this.

Another one i was playing around lately is colour range.

  • Yeah, that too.

  • i just cant belive that we are done that was great dude . thank you very very very much.....good luck....

  • aaaw, you mean this was the last episode? :(

  • qwqwqwqw

  • He really needs to blend that picture a little, it makes it look even more real.

  • Look at his other videos. He does blend, and can make a realistic picture with cheetos. O_O

  • I know, hes really good. I'm just saying that he needs to blend it (this picture), and THEN it would look like a mirror image of her...lol I love that Cheeto's video. :D

  • You have done a great job.

Could you please teach how to draw from a live model?

  • Hey dude...where are the rest of the vids...I feel like a kid must feel when Dad says he's going to work but he never comes back and years later you find out he has another family 5 states away...LOL....okay I'm just kidding. This was a great series

  • HAHAHAHA that so made me laugh!! =D =)

  • i agree!

  • I have taken lesson from two renown master artists and you have done a far better job explaining / articulating what it takes to make a good / great portrait. Pay no attention to the jealous bloggers who do not have the patience to achieve the skills you have! More posts... please

  • Putting a piece of paper over the created work is actually a really good idea :o I usually end up smudgeing all my work with my hand haha.

  • hey man.....this series of drawing tutorials are purely a great work.....its fantastic. I actually learnt the simple tecnique to draw a pic.....thank u ^_^

  • This series is a great achievement, you should continue it. I think you have a great understanding of how to teach.

  • you ate this guy?

  • i dont know but i think the nose

  • its marilyn monroe...dips!

  • Damm man you great I also watced all the parts.

    Thanks bro.

  • what james bond tool did you use?

  • I heard it many times, people say draw what you see, but of course when I tried to draw i failed. The way you showed/explained how volumes create an image -I can draw now :))) Of course faces appear out of proportion and some parts look more real than others. But people can recognize the face. As a side effect, when I look at people now, I search for volumes :) Question: Where does one go from here ? Any books that you think is worthwhile ?How do I practice the right way so I get better ?

  • would it be possible to show how to draw the hard stuff? like the nose, since the lips, chin, and neck are fairly standard. and what did you use for the first one? it looks like paint, but whatever you used, its breathtaking.

  • i watched all. cant wait for next batch. thanks.

  • Very good tutorials!

But I have watched them all like 10 times.

And I am waiting for almost one year for a new tutorial!

    Please upload a new one!

    Thanks.

  • I watched all your videos in one night =]

    Inspired me to do something

  • hello!

firstly, I want to thank you for the interesting episodes, I probably learned more than in six years of school art lessons... ^^

Nonetheless, there is something I cannot really understand:

If I understood you right, you normally start drawing with a 4B pencil.. But didn't you say also that one should start with the lightest pencil, whereas 4B is the darkest ? I am a little bit confused :)

  • It doesnt matter what the darkness is, but how hard and light you press, If you have a soft enough touch you could do a whole portrait with a 6B pencil

  • I watched all 27, THANK YOU :) I would never thought of getting the portrait done in this way lol. It takes a looot of patience, but i have it fortunatelly ;] Now i need only to figure out how to do such photoshoped contrast pictures in the right order and i will do some piece of art lol haha.

Thanks again, you did great job + your intoduction to drawing was extraordinary :)

    cheers from Poland!

  • what eraser is he using on this art work i need to know ???

  • its a kneaded eraser, you can find them almost everywhere :) they are quite cheap :D

  • ur amazing .. i love u ! lol

now i can see the light values much btr.. from where can i get the resource .. is there any books u recommend ?

  • thanx that was the best eva!!!!

are you going to do the rest 4 us?

  • METAL ON!

  • OMG! That is the most amazing artwork I've seen in my life! Can you do a whole pic of Marilyn? Please? For us fans?

  • everytime I used to draw a portrait it would look more like a cricature but now I know about value shapes, measuring, etc...

    Thanx.:)

  • I want to see the whole drawing!!

  • Thank you... I can draw faces but, can't get them to look like a particular person. I'm anxious to watch the video set and get started...

  • kudos

  • monroe

  • Thank you very much!!!!!

    for teaching me drawing portraits!!!

now i can draw a lot better!!!!

  • I love you! this should help me to create more realistic drawings Thanks

  • This is the best tutorial I've seen so far! Thank you very much! Not only are you able to make beginning drawers realize what they can do if they use the right techniques, you also show more experienced artists interesting facts and methods in an easy to understand and inspiring way. Watching this helped me a lot. Again thank you!

  • wouldnt blue-tack work if i cant find a knead eraser?

  • this is amazing...

wow how much are u charching me for this classes?

    lmao

    nahhh

hey were or how did u get all those shaded pics step by step

    (pages)

  • This is better than being in class =}

  • You are able to explain everything that you do, with amazing results. I dont know if you are a better teacher or artist.

  • Obviously he IS getting paid if they're putting ads on his videos.

  • The same as the ads on every other video on youtube, beacuse youtube put them there to make money from google.

  • Youtube's owned by google. Youtube/Google get the money from the websites that the ads link to then give Jason/any other lucky ad person a share. I wanna know how to strike one of those deals lol. Anyways, why are we talking about money when we should be discussing how good he is at teaching, isn't it a real eye opener to watch his videos and realize it's not about what you see and label typically but what is actually there when you break it down?

  • F'reals. Ain't art grand? :D

  • Yes.

  • hes alright i suppose...but its slow, im a illuatrster and work nuch quicker, but not to that level of detail.

  • he's purposely going slow.. so he can teach us without confusing us

  • Hi Jason,

Thanks for taking the time to teach us how to draw portraits. These lessons really meant a lot to me. I now have a newfound confidence in creating artwork--it is steady and fine-tuned. And I couldn't have done it without your generous lectures. If you have the time, I was hoping that you could provide tutorials on other media as well. Once again, thank you.

  • Hi, i've been watching your videos, i really like them!!!! thank u very much for teaching me drawing portraits FREE!!!!!! you know, i actually buy all kinds of pencils and good paper, and follow your steps, that's feels really good. Suddently, i find life is much more fun with drawing. No matter how bad my drawing is, i always feel happy. thank u for bring me all these happiness!!! thx!!!

  • hey man these rule you're a saint for putting these up

  • your a great artist and teacher

  • can you make a tutorial for oil painting?

  • So are these exercises (from episode five to episode six) supposed to help you see value? Can these exercises be applied to all forms of art (not just portraiture) like cartooning? Is this helpful for all realism and not just portraiture?

  • these videos are really awesome... thanks a lot for the videos....u r a very talented man... could you plz lemme knw frm where can i download the last part of episode 6. its no longer available in utube or u can upload ot again...for all ur fans...

thanks a lot for all the posts....

  • these videos are really awesome great thanks=] 5*

  • The hair and the mole is a dead giveaway. Awsome tutorials!

  • When are tyou going ot make more videos i am craving some more

  • I really like these videos and I find your advice very helpful, but I think the last ones have been way too long. I often had to skip the parts of the videos that have no talking. This one had too many parts too; the actual teaching could have been condensed into something like 4 parts. I suggest that you speed up the drawing process (3x would be enough) while teaching and explaining on voiceover.

That aside, thank you very much for sharing your knowledge and talent publicly and for free. :)

  • I'm sorry for asking that question earlier, i kicked in halfway through the episode, and i watched the earlier parts just now which explain everything

  • How can one copy a picture if the scaling of original and destination is not 1:1, e.g. if you have to enlarge a certain part of a picture? Triangulation won't work then i guess

  • Yeah it will, go back to that video and he explains that you can scale the triangulation by measuring two angles and you can find the third point by marking where they intersect.

  • Thanks for all ur lessons

    It was really helpful...CONGRATS!!!

  • Should we be starting to see the layers when we look at a picture or subject? Should the shadings start to pop out or is how you see that way coming in futher lessons? Thanks for your time....it is helpful.

  • awesome!!!!

  • Hey Jason! First of all, thank you for the time and pacience...

You have taught me the most helpfull things about drawing, and that made the huggest difference.

I wish I could e-mail you some of my drawings or something so you could see the progress i've done so far.

  • Hey, I appreciate the amount of time and effort you put into these videos to help us become artists. I wanted to ask you a few questions.

1)What paper do you use in your portrait drawings?

    2) Do you use graphite pencils or charcoal pencils, and which hb's do you use most often?

    3) Do you basically go into photoshop with every picture you draw and give it the different values/filters?

Thanks So much and hope I hear from you!

  • 1) Depends on the drawing. Most of the videos are probably canson and strathmore. Acid free drawing paper works well and lasts. Also use 100% cotton papers for important things.

2)answered in an early video in the series.

    3) No, this was done to illustrate stepped value shapes. It is a simplified and obvious example how I look at what I'm drawing.

  • great work def helped out a lot. Would you ever consider doing any other how to videos such as oil paints or acrylics?

  • that was really helpful, thanks for posting!

  • Thanks Jason! Great tutorials. I am following along with the steps. I do one step per day and learning a lot. This makes much more sense than reading a drawing book.

  • after watching all these videos im so glad your speed paintings arent in real time, otherwise it would be like watching these tutorials lol

but thanks, i wish my art teacher spent this much time helping me in school

  • That's why I put the warning to skip ahead. If you're like me you just want to jump in and try it yourself. But people are always asking to watch real time.

  • excellent tutorials!!thanks!!!

  • Really helpful, you must practice a lot! I must start NOW!!! *get's pencils and drawing paper*

  • thanks jason for the 16 posts! it was really cool!

  • watching you draw is simply amazing, ty so much!

  • very good job. i love drawing, but im so bad at it. im not bad at the shading part actually. what im terrible at is seeing a shape and reproducing it...but then again i didnt know the pencil method. thank you!!! i watch ur videos everydaaaayyyy :P

  • Thanks for the videos....Extremely helpful!! You're very generous to take your time to post them.

  • dude i feel so privileged to see this.. EclecticAsylum is a pro :D

  • I feel I can draw better just by looking at you (EclecticAsylumArt) draw. D: <

  • Hair is hard to draw
