if i culd chose to hear anny song live i wuld chose this one by faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar....
While I greatly appreciate the artistry of Orbital, I feel that as a live act they're a couple of complete wankers. There's no performance; they just hit "start" on their sequencers and then hop around with their arms in the air. It seems with this one, they even had trouble with the "start" button.
You couldnt be more wrong, compare this to a studio version..its clear its being performed live. Orbital are famous for live improvising during their gigs. While one does his bez impresion you can be sure the other is working his ass off.
On another note it really is amazing how the amen break takes any electro track to the next level.
so i take it when they hit "start" that also controls the mixing console and all the analog controls on thier machines like the 909 808 303 moogs dauntlessmath you are clueless
I'm always interested when people break out the old "they just press start" argument about orbital and other dance acts.
Do you say they fake it because music like this cannot be performed "live", or they fake it because why WOULD they do it when you could just press start and dance around like a wanker, pretending to swing out of the mixing desk?
I was at this gig. Best fun in the fucking world, real or fake. But Phil was a bit OTT with the grooving, possibly he was drunk or high!
Even if they do just press start on a thing, they still have to be VERY familiar with the synthesizers that they're using. No random yahoo can come up with something like this off the top of their heads. My friend has a Roland SH-201, and it's no easy keyboard to manipulate. To get a keyboard to the exact settings you want it to be at still takes a lot of talent.
*laughs* I woulda paid damn good money to see a dalek being crowd surfed :P Though that woulda been one hell of a trip I admit.. especailly if the crowd started chanting "EX-TER-MIN-ATE!"
Well played but they totally screwed it up by putting the middle 8 bars in at the wrong points. That's the best bit of the piece, its not meant to be the reccuring theme.
can you hear me shout "we love you!" right after they fuck up the beginning bit and Paul says "hold on a minute" - my claim to Orbital fame! and we do love you, please come back, best show of my life!!!!!!!!!!xxx
I heard this cos this is the theme on doctor who confidental and i didnt like it. I love the new doctor theme, whole wales orchestra the last, sounds amazing, i cant stop listning to it
I know orbital had access the mastertape, but they really didnt do a godo job in my opinion, its sounds week?
It's a lovely story, but sadly not so. The Hartnoll brothers (Orbital) aren't related to William Hartnell (the first Dr Who) in anyway. They're just fans of the show. But I was at this gig and even though we were all stood ankle deep in freezing mud being soaked to the skin by the non-stop rain of that Glastonbury, it was still a blast to be there! But God! Was I glad to go home afterwards!
Doctor Who is a science fiction series about a man known only as the Doctor. He is a time lord 'alien' and he travels in space and time in a TARDIS 'time and relitive dimentions in space'. Search doctor who on youtube and have a look.
i just saw a documentary that was on bbc4 about the radiophonic workshop in the 50's. my god they were ahead of their time. they made that tune using loads of samples played faster and slower on multiple tape decks. if your interested, the film was called 'alchemists of sound' and is definately worth watching. anyway, this is a pretty cool remix, i'd love to hear another remix of it tho. apperntly the mars volta used to rehearse the theme tune lol
'Doctor Who' is a British Sci-fi series that started in 1963 and has recently restarted after having been stopped in 89. It was written mainly by Ron Grainer and put together by Delia Derbyshire with the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. This version is a remix, but I don't know when Orbital remixed it.
they did a b track called deeper i think it went something like focus your attention on a spot blah blah then went into a meditation tune anyone got it please post

In the new Doctor Who Series they need to go back to glastonbury 2004 and it could be the doctor himself who causes the glith.

I personally couldn't disagree more. I love the original theme and orbital's cover; hate the orchestral.

The original Doctor Who, William Hartnell, was their grandfather. His line starts it off.

Really? That's very interesting to learn...and a rather nice way to pay tribute to him and the show--the icon--he helped define.
