Rhythm, structure, and a particular key for the song are beyond these musicians. They went beyond common sense a long time ago. To cheer this as "music" is like cheering the kid that scratches the chalkboard. It's funny but the sound hurts the ears. Thanks for the humor!!
To all the haters of this kind of music. It's just you don't understand it. Avantgarde is really actually very organized. All these notes go together with each other, the drum playing fits the style. A very organized piece of spontaneous puzzle. Don't know how that works or if it makes sense.. but yeah. Its a hate it or love it kind of genre.
i love avant garde and freestyle, because is more spontaneous, more natural, more human that beign attached to a structure, im not saying that i hate the jazz structures, i think are beautiful, but i find this a little more "spiritual".
That right there tells me that these people are stumbling over their instruments (be it hand, brush, saxophone, or piano), just HOPING for a cool-sounding result. I find extreme free jazz overly pretentious and schmug, most of all because it's nothing but a statement, like "this is improvised" well I don't care! interesting thoughts. i think that's why free jazz is so fascinating: it's so inconclusively controversial. honestly, i feel like it lacks the structure that made me fall in love with jazz in the first place. dissonance is great, but only in the context of some kind of resolution, which i feel this lacks.. but music and art is all a matter of opinion, and that's just mine. others aren't necessarily wrong because they disagree with me on what constitutes good music.
i think this music has separated the cerebral function of musicianship from the process of making music; these guys aren't playing with their brains, they're playing with their hands. it sounds like they're thinking, "i think i'll play a few notes down on this end of the keyboard now, then i'll head somewhere down the other way and maybe tap a few on my way there" instead of thinking, "i want to achieve a 5 note succession that sounds precisely like this."
the worst thing ive ever heard in my life. Sounds like 4 year olds banging around on anything they can get their hands on. Its not art, and shouldnt even been associated w/ Jazz.
Well it's more musical than alot of the stuff I make lol jk.
Avant-Garde is alot of fun to play and this performance is very musical compared to what else is out there. Music is notes with feeling. This has notes with feeling. Unconventional notes but notes nonetheless. If there was a concert like this near me I'd go in a heartbeat.
if this is improvisation it think it's amazing to notice how they can come together, by making it possible to do your own thing with presentation of unique sounds, as music isn't only notes but floating streams.
In closing you can't get something for nothing. Create something of worth and I will take it seriously. What really saddens me is that you are up there giving the master class and, at least giving the appearence of doing well while the busking saxophonist in the subway station has, or atleast shows, 100 times more skill that the likes of you all. Not all avant garde is bad. You just give it a bad name. The idea is origonality. Banging on piano keys was done, by me at age 3.
Art is in a terrible state today. Visual artists dump a pile of dirt on the ground and musicians make noise that can be replicated by a group of untrained childen. The masses as well as many educated don't like it but many are scared to admit it as they don't want to look uncultured. You swarm in with your umbrella of "high art." I consider art to take skill. While you might consider the masters of the past old fasioned, they had skill, you don't. If you want to be new, do ut creativly.
I am tired of "musicians" passing off this rubbish as music and art. Before you slam me with the assumption that I am a lamen to music and art, I will clarify. I spent many years studying all facets of music. I am a composer as well as a performer of jazz and the classical generes. But you and your kind have been coorupting the population into believing that music must sound like this perverted filth that you displayed.
regardless of personal opinions on 'musicality, you all have to admit this is an extremely difficult form of playing and takes a considerable amount of dedication and commitment to be able to achieve the levels of intensity displayed. Maybe those that doubt the complexity should listen to more than the first 2 minutes.
This music is sustained intense crescendo. It is music, I like it personally, but that's what it seems to be. Many examples 'begin and end' with the same 'movement' of varying intense bursts, whether they be the transfixing performance of a Sanders/Coltrane My Favorite Things or some crackpot kids next door in the garage. Many many times 'free jazz' will display the same emotional texture and movement. When great cats do it, I love it.
what the hell are these guys doing? they probably think they're like groundbreaking artists or something, this jjst sucks, it's not jazz by any accounts, it's jazz musicians that are in a bad period of there mid- life crisis, and have taken it out on their instruments!
Oh, and just to fill in some blanks: being a good musician doesn't mean you also make good music. It's the result that matters, and the result here is un-listenable. I am pretty sure that these people are accomplished musicians but, what is the point, anyway?
Sometimes music may be made for not be listen to. The avant garde jazz fulfill the aesthetic characteristics to be considered music and, therefore, art.
Oh, and other thing: I mistakenly marked your other post as spam when I was about to answer it. Sorry. .__.
You have a point here, indeed. Yet, I must confess that I still believe that music's primary feature is having (a sort of) a melody in it, in general. The term "music" must also be examined with respect to its etymology, to fully understand its use and purpose. I am saying this because you also use another "maltreated" term: Art!
Still, I believe we can have a nice exchange of ideas here, your comment is really to the point. Cheers.
OK, it's a matter of taste (some people like this) but I don't think this should be categorized under the label "music". "Random sounds" is more appropriate. Making sounds with musical instruments does not necessarily imply creating music.
Actually, I bet they could play this again 'note for note', but how would that be improvisation/experimentation in this musical genre? *If you want to hear this twice, by their CD!
jazz musicians dont play the same in the next concert. If u want to hear the same go turn ur tv to mtv. If jazz was playd the same then they might as well record themselves and press play instead of playing it themselves.
forgive me for saying this, but it sounds like a band warming up before a performance, not the performance itself! what is the point in listening to music without any sort of beat or set key? it's not music, it's noise that happens to be made by instruments...
All music is noise that happens to be made with instruments. If you don't reckognize the musicality in the piece it is your own fault, don't discredit what you don't understand.
go ahead mark me down and make some comment involving 'Britney Spears' or some other terrible pop music. For the record i don't listen to that since the music is meaningless and the people who make it are not talented. This 'music' may be very different but it's just as bad if not worse! Even the most cheesy rubbishy pop song has had more work put in (by somebody, not nessecarily the so called 'star') than this has! This is a bunch of people who can't play any instruments.
just because you can't recognize the musicality doesn't mean its not there. Take a jazz theory class before you try and say these people can't play their instruments because these are master musicicians. If you can recognize the musicality in rubbish pop songs, perhaps that is what you should stick too.
Jazz theory classes don't apply to this other than the fact they are performing on instruments of that genre. This is a lump of noise with no musicality what so ever! Look at the piano playing for instance it's just random keys... seriously stop trying to defend this peice by saying it is musically good. If you like it for how it sounds fine but don't try and say it is musically good because it really is just people who arn't playing instruments in any way shape or form beyond that of a child!
Oh? Tell me how any of what i just posted is wrong with a grown up answer and not some nonesense like 'This is art man! You can't understand it.'It ain't it's noise. Now if you like this fair enough i know some people who like noise as in the genre (various sounds and tones in no structure just jumbles) and they can like it but it ain't my thing however at least that has a following of listeners who realise it isn't music! This is people who are playing instruments at the level of a child in this
they are playing extremely complex jazz scales at immense speeds, to the untrained ear, i'll admit it sound like noise but if you're are familiar with jazz theory you'd appreciate this much more. and yes i listen to noise and can completely differentiate the difference from that to this.
I am familiar with jazz theory and still think this is total random sounds with no meaning whatsoever. After all, the expression "to the untrained ear" is a bit elitist and racist, don't you think? This is just a meaningless array of sounds, even "trained" ears can admit that. There is no musicality in it and there won't be any, even if you scrutinize the notes and put them down to sheet music.
Well, my account contains 1 video of AC-DC and 1 of The Cinematic Orchestra covering AEOC's "Theme de YoYo". Can you express a concrete opinion about my tastes? No! Yet, you judged me partially by that AC-DC video. I may not be an elitist but you are definitely unable to use a reasonable argument to validate your opinion. Thus, you are very close to being stupid
First of all, learn to spell the word "receive". It's not that hard.
Secondly, some advice: never judge people before you have actually found out what they have accomplished. You don't know me but you act like you're my biographer.
Oh, and about "being out of element": Good music is a matter of taste and of musical knowledge.-
no, taste doesn't matter at all. why should anyone accept your absurd opinions on what is "good" and "bad?" keep that shit to yourself, learn to analyze and understand music outside of the subjective realm.
it is not about staying objective, it's about argumentation. Of course music is entirely a subjective matter, that's what's so nice about it. We just have to break our opinions down, so that the person we're discussing with perhaps will understand - and if we're good at it, he/she will be convinced. And there you are; the way to change the world.
You should be careful what you are saying. These people have probably played a gazillion times more and longer then your crappy pop artists. Maybe you should try to play instruments, and youll get somewhat familiar with the term freestyle, and just maybe, appreciate it more
I have just released "Break Away" featuring Joel and poet Jere Carroll. Joel is truly a great player and great friend. The guitarist is Jimmy Williams and he has played with many musicians. Thank you so much for your comment. Paul
every group murphy puts together is made up of devestating musicians."EXCURSIONS" is his latest release. the reviews are 5 star and paul and larry willis have just taken jazz to a new level.thank you for posting.
Wow Paul, I just looked at your main page and see that you live in North Beach. I also live in MD and pass through your town on the way to St. Mary's and Solomons quite often. I play free, leave me a message if you are ever looking for players.
Beautiful improvisation! I like the comment about this style of music not being about competition, but about exploration. It's those magic moments that come from nowhere and just make your jaw drop and time stop. Thanks! Al
i had no IDEA that such extreme madness existed... to me avant garde was Mingus, Ornette Coleman and bands like Henry Cow, Art Zoyd and so forth... now all of them sounds like New Age compared to this...
can anyone tell me some band names on this genre? thanks!
Cecil Taylor, Jimmy Lyons, Chicago Art Ensemble, Albert Ayler, Rashied Ali, Andrew Cyrille, Sun Ra, William Parker, Karen Borca, Sam Rivers and John Zorn. I love to listen as much as I love to play. Thank You, MURPHY.

i think this music has separated the cerebral function of musicianship from the process of making music; these guys aren't playing with their brains, they're playing with their hands. it sounds like they're thinking, "i think i'll play a few notes down on this end of the keyboard now, then i'll head somewhere down the other way and maybe tap a few on my way there" instead of thinking, "i want to achieve a 5 note succession that sounds precisely like this."

If you want to be new, do ut creativly.
aaldredge 3 years ago
I am tired of "musicians" passing off this rubbish as music and art. Before you slam me with the assumption that I am a lamen to music and art, I will clarify. I spent many years studying all facets of music. I am a composer as well as a performer of jazz and the classical generes. But you and your kind have been coorupting the population into believing that music must sound like this perverted filth that you displayed.

AJOPDX 3 years ago
regardless of personal opinions on 'musicality, you all have to admit this is an extremely difficult form of playing and takes a considerable amount of dedication and commitment to be able to achieve the levels of intensity displayed. Maybe those that doubt the complexity should listen to more than the first 2 minutes.
546login 3 years ago
a true musician wouldn't say anything is not music, for to truly be a "musician"
you would except that everything is musical to some degree,
banging together pots and pans can be musical
playing chaotically can be music.
the whole point of avant garde is its controlled chaos, which in itself is an artistic expression, and also has musicality to it making it music.
your personal determination of skill level to it is soloy based on your history with and of music.
KajjeKillsKamikaze 3 years ago 3
This music is sustained intense crescendo. It is music, I like it personally, but that's what it seems to be. Many examples 'begin and end' with the same 'movement' of varying intense bursts, whether they be the transfixing performance of a Sanders/Coltrane My Favorite Things or some crackpot kids next door in the garage. Many many times 'free jazz' will display the same emotional texture and movement. When great cats do it, I love it.

what the hell are these guys doing? they probably think they're like groundbreaking artists or something, this jjst sucks, it's not jazz by any accounts, it's jazz musicians that are in a bad period of there mid- life crisis, and have taken it out on their instruments!
bendinggreenvans 3 years ago
Oh, and just to fill in some blanks: being a good musician doesn't mean you also make good music. It's the result that matters, and the result here is un-listenable. I am pretty sure that these people are accomplished musicians but, what is the point, anyway?
Capillus 3 years ago
Sometimes music may be made for not be listen to. The avant garde jazz fulfill the aesthetic characteristics to be considered music and, therefore, art.
Oh, and other thing: I mistakenly marked your other post as spam when I was about to answer it. Sorry. .__.
Gmaytorena 3 years ago
You have a point here, indeed. Yet, I must confess that I still believe that music's primary feature is having (a sort of) a melody in it, in general. The term "music" must also be examined with respect to its etymology, to fully understand its use and purpose. I am saying this because you also use another "maltreated" term: Art!
Still, I believe we can have a nice exchange of ideas here, your comment is really to the point. Cheers.
Capillus 3 years ago
You know if i was to throw a guitar down some stairs it would be just as musical as this is by which i mean it wouldn't be.
karl198 3 years ago
OK, it's a matter of taste (some people like this) but I don't think this should be categorized under the label "music". "Random sounds" is more appropriate. Making sounds with musical instruments does not necessarily imply creating music.
Capillus 3 years ago
xxsavemysoulxx have a point...Is ther a beat in the "music" when they are warming up?

Actually, I bet they could play this again 'note for note', but how would that be improvisation/experimentation in this musical genre? *If you want to hear this twice, by their CD!
Peace
bobdwilliams 4 years ago
jazz musicians dont play the same in the next concert. If u want to hear the same go turn ur tv to mtv. If jazz was playd the same then they might as well record themselves and press play instead of playing it themselves.
japa1990 3 years ago
yeah, what would be the point in going to a concert anyway if your just listening to the same monkey that played on your cd player before.

cheesechipcookie 4 years ago
forgive me for saying this, but it sounds like a band warming up before a performance, not the performance itself! what is the point in listening to music without any sort of beat or set key? it's not music, it's noise that happens to be made by instruments...
xxsavemysoulxx 4 years ago
alot of people like "noise" made by instruments. It's like abstract painting.. you either get it, or you don't.
potar 4 years ago 5
All music is noise that happens to be made with instruments. If you don't reckognize the musicality in the piece it is your own fault, don't discredit what you don't understand.
fatalposition 3 years ago
I recognize it, but I don't know if I reckognize it.
SouthwesternEagle 3 years ago
1 month late on that spelling correction, but thanks anyways.
fatalposition 3 years ago
go ahead mark me down and make some comment involving 'Britney Spears' or some other terrible pop music. For the record i don't listen to that since the music is meaningless and the people who make it are not talented. This 'music' may be very different but it's just as bad if not worse! Even the most cheesy rubbishy pop song has had more work put in (by somebody, not nessecarily the so called 'star') than this has! This is a bunch of people who can't play any instruments.
karl198 3 years ago
just because you can't recognize the musicality doesn't mean its not there. Take a jazz theory class before you try and say these people can't play their instruments because these are master musicicians. If you can recognize the musicality in rubbish pop songs, perhaps that is what you should stick too.
fatalposition 3 years ago
Agreed!
Xure 3 years ago
Jazz theory classes don't apply to this other than the fact they are performing on instruments of that genre. This is a lump of noise with no musicality what so ever! Look at the piano playing for instance it's just random keys... seriously stop trying to defend this peice by saying it is musically good. If you like it for how it sounds fine but don't try and say it is musically good because it really is just people who arn't playing instruments in any way shape or form beyond that of a child!
karl198 3 years ago
you don't know what you're talking about.
fatalposition 3 years ago
This is people who are playing instruments at the level of a child in this
karl198 3 years ago
they are playing extremely complex jazz scales at immense speeds, to the untrained ear, i'll admit it sound like noise but if you're are familiar with jazz theory you'd appreciate this much more. and yes i listen to noise and can completely differentiate the difference from that to this.
fatalposition 3 years ago
The guy scraping the strings downwards with two bows on a double bass is a complex scale? Sorry but please tell me what :)
karl198 3 years ago
I am familiar with jazz theory and still think this is total random sounds with no meaning whatsoever. After all, the expression "to the untrained ear" is a bit elitist and racist, don't you think? This is just a meaningless array of sounds, even "trained" ears can admit that. There is no musicality in it and there won't be any, even if you scrutinize the notes and put them down to sheet music.
Capillus 3 years ago
Racist? Thats about the most ignorant thing i've seen someone posts here. Stick to simple music like ac/dc. how's that for elitist?
fatalposition 3 years ago
Well, my account contains 1 video of AC-DC and 1 of The Cinematic Orchestra covering AEOC's "Theme de YoYo". Can you express a concrete opinion about my tastes? No! Yet, you judged me partially by that AC-DC video. I may not be an elitist but you are definitely unable to use a reasonable argument to validate your opinion. Thus, you are very close to being stupid
Capillus 3 years ago
You're out of your element here, stick to what you know. What jazz education or training have you recieved if you really understand it???
fatalposition 3 years ago
First of all, learn to spell the word "receive". It's not that hard.
Secondly, some advice: never judge people before you have actually found out what they have accomplished. You don't know me but you act like you're my biographer.
Oh, and about "being out of element": Good music is a matter of taste and of musical knowledge.-
Capillus 3 years ago
nice, correct my spelling to avoid the question. its kind of hard not to judge when you're acting like a stereotypical troll.
fatalposition 3 years ago
But taste is what matters primarily, OK?
Capillus 3 years ago
thus comes the expression "bad taste"
fatalposition 3 years ago
no, taste doesn't matter at all. why should anyone accept your absurd opinions on what is "good" and "bad?" keep that shit to yourself, learn to analyze and understand music outside of the subjective realm.
defdeezy 3 years ago
it is not about staying objective, it's about argumentation. Of course music is entirely a subjective matter, that's what's so nice about it. We just have to break our opinions down, so that the person we're discussing with perhaps will understand - and if we're good at it, he/she will be convinced. And there you are; the way to change the world.
FredeGF 3 years ago
You should be careful what you are saying. These people have probably played a gazillion times more and longer then your crappy pop artists. Maybe you should try to play instruments, and youll get somewhat familiar with the term freestyle, and just maybe, appreciate it more
