  • Beautiful. But seeing buildings like this also makes me depressed thinking about all the beautiful movie palaces (i.e. the Fox Theater nearby in San Francisco) that have been demolished, particularly during the Cold War era, and replaced with ugly blocks of homogeneity. It was especially dumb in retrospect considering how city centers/downtown areas are rejuvenating and need history/culture like this. :-(

  • My nephew who is 6'5" loves this theater's main floor because it has legroom all over!

  • I love this place! I'm going to see Puss in Boots tomorrow!

  • i go here all the time

  • This is a great idea to market such a wonderful movie theater! I live in Illinois and make it a point to see any old movie palace whenever I'm traveling, and now this one is definitely on my list of theaters I must see. The owner seems like he has really kept the Grand Lake in its original splendor, and that is a thing to be cherished. Love that there's still a functioning organ, as well!

  • I come when ever there's a movie I want to see. Tonight I am going to see "The Black Swan"

  • Love the theater and the owner who is socially responsible, willing to stand behind his beliefs and values regardless of 'commercial' value. We come to this theater whenever a film we want to see is offered there. We support the owner as well as the value of this historic theater. I hope it remains the landmark beauty it is and has been. Thank you.

  • Love this old theatre! I used to come for Disney triple features, back in the day :-) Mahalo for your aloha of old movie palaces and for keeping this gem up and running, Mr. Michaan!

  • Best theatre in the Bay Area.

  • This is a great theater. I recommend a Friday or Saturday evening to hear the organ player..I love this place

  • I love the philosophy that this cinema embraces.

  • man i grew up going to the grand lake theater it's a cool place i'm glad this old school theater is still in oakland i have so many memorys here seen so many movies here 2 many to name ....

  • i grew up in the Bay in the late 60's/early 70's going to this theater sharing many fond memories of weekend movie matinees of Disney fare like Darby O'Gill & The Little People & Flubber etc. My neighborhood rag tag friends - think the little rascals + the u.n. - couldn't wait to get on our bikes (some pedaling, others on handlebars) to make our way to the Grand Lake followed by Giant Burger up the street. Of course, it was a different time, but I'm glad to see its still open

  • It is so good to see such a team dedicated to the world of the Movie Palace, complete with Theatre Organ and such. Thank you so much for your work from a retired projectionist. I wish I lived in the Oakland area.

  • I live in Oakland and am in fact going to this beautiful old theatre tonight. there is very little crime in this neighborhood. I've never felt unsafe here. This is a great, clean, old, beautiful throw back theatre. Grand indeed! So much better than the McMall, cookie cutters most people go to.

  • I live in Oakland where this beautiful old theater remains. Visit it but remember, Hold on to your purse tight, don't pull money out of your wallet while still outside, allways look around you and enjoy the movie! Did I mention I live in Oakland? This is not the same Oakland from 1926 unfortunately. The theature still deserve's it's grand name though. Grand Lake. An original show piece.

  • I love those old movie palaces.

  • Warren--a great colleague in the theatre organ world--and Packard aficiando! Hello and Best Wishes!
