Looking good girl! Love the pivots, they're perfect! :)
I know posted this video a while ago and you're probably a pro now, but the main thing I see is that your stirrups are way too long. If you're trying to build more leg strength, that's a good way to go. But when it comes to showing, you're gonna want to shorten those stirrups so that you can post more smoothly and have your legs more flared out & steady. I definitely think you're on the right track & your horse is adorable! :) Good luck!
ummmm i've been riding saddleseat my whole life. if you don't have accses to a real saddleseat horse(or you don't want to ride one) then your hands are fine. but you should try to keep your heels out, toes in. and try to grip with your calves more and less like a hunter.....but you're pretty good for that being your first lesson
I've been riding saddle seat for a while and I am even retraining my saddle seat horse, so I know a bit about this stuff. You look great for a beginner (and riding a stock horse), just keep your elbows in and at your sides, sit straight up, and try to almost push down on your stirrups when you post so you go straight up, not forward. Flare your legs out so your calves aren't touching her. Try riding her with spurs or a whip to get her to move more. You look really good, and I wish you good luck!
I didn't want to go thru all the comments to see if anyone already put this, cuz i'm lazy. BUT if no one did:
Theres a special way to hold the reins. Okay the snaffle is on top of the curb bit. grab the snaffle rein and hold it like you would with a regular bridle. Then the curb bit rein goes between your middle and ring finger. Make sure the snaffle is the rein closest to the outside. (:
@HorseFever596 Saddlebreds, for the last 7 years. I've always held my reins with the snaffle like a regular single-rein bridle. With a double bridle, unlike the single bridle, I've always been taught to ride with my curb between my pinky and ring fingers. It yields a faster response, enables you to work the curb rein with a more feather-like touch and it gives you a better finesse, plus it's easier to shorten and loosen like you need to that way.
I am a saddle seat rider of 9 years and would love to give you some comments! You are sitting up nice and tall, and if you were on a traditional saddle seat horse (Saddlebredect.) then you would hold your hands higher to allow for their natural head carriage, and bring more "action" into their front legs. You need to keep your knees on the saddle, you calves need to be away from it, not gripping like a hunter, and try showing the bottom of your boot to however watching. Check my videos for more!
Thanks so much for the tips! I have a video up of the show I was practicing for here, and I got 2nd in Equitation!! I've decided that saddle seat is a lot of fun, and I can't wait to do it again next year! :)
1. Your lower leg should only touch the horse's side when you're asking it for a transition. You want to grip with the inside of your thighs. It's painful. Riding without stirrups in a flat saddle A LOT will help you with this.
2. You kind of want a right angle in your hands. Your horse's neck doesn't look as if it would allow for this extreme of an angle, so just do what feels right.
3. You want a straight line from heel to hip to ankle. Keep them lined up (:
If you ever come to a horse show where there are no saddleseat classes. You don't let them tell you that your in the wrong class (believe me, I have confront that situation all the time where I live!)! You pick yourself up and keep on trying again and again and again!
I am in the same situation as you are. I have been riding saddleseat since I was little, and I have been tuaght by some of the best saddleseat riding teachers in the North West. Then we moved to Vancouver Island (off of the west coast of Canada) a few years ago and absolutely no one knows a thing about saddleseat. I currently have three American Saddlebreds (one is imported from Kentucky). So for the past four years me and my family have been demonstrating saddleseat riding all over our island!
that is a HUGE no-no. While we're on the leg topic, you need to shorten your stirrups at least two holes, maybe three on each side. Push your heel down, bring your leg back. And as a side note, if your horse is more comfortable with her head tucked in than up, then let her do it. She looks better that way.
Your hands should be pretty close together, not straight out from your sides. Your thumbs need to look at each other, not be straight up and down. Not that your hands need to be horizontal, but just angle them toward each other. Your hands need to stay motionless the entire time, right in the same spot. Saddleseat riders do not hold on with their calves. AT ALL. You need to do a lot of no stirrup work and just hold on with your thighs and knees. I see a lot of daylight between your knees, and
I will start off by saying that I do not approve of stock horses in saddleseat, just making that known. But I do commend your bravery for jumping into something you know very little about. I'll give you some advice (I've been riding saddleseat for 11 years). And as a side note, saddleseat equitation and saddleseat pattern are the same thing. ;]
First off, you arms are way too far in front of you, you need to lengthen your reins and bring your arms back. Elbows need to be right by your side.
@angyllaydying no ur elbows are supposed to be right in front of ur body, do u ride equitation cause elbows by the side make u look really tense, hope u dont show that way, only problem is her hands are not up meaning she needs to bend at the elbow, go wach some real vids and maybe u will understand, wow 11 years and u dont know this
@shorserider18 The way you described is the new way that seems to be spreading like wildfire. I was taught to ride with the tips of my elbows at my sides. I think elbows in front of you looks weird, like the rider is reaching way too far out. It would look especially weird with a rider who does not have a high-headed horse. I did ride this way and still do, and I almost always won my equitation classes. That's just my advice and my way though.
@angyllaydying the reason for having ur elbows in front of ur body is so that u still have contact in the horses mouth i know u still can have contact in the mouth with longer reins but some ppl cant and with ur elbows at ur side some people tighten them ther and they look really tense, and i also understand that it is not that big of a deal as long as u arnt tense, and i am srry for sounding rude, i just read my earlier comment and didnt mean for it to sound that way
@shorserider18 If you're riding for equitation, though -which since the poster of the video said they judge only upon the rider, I assume it's more equitation-based- it is preferable to have your elbow tips at your sides, not in front of you.
u look sooooooooo good! ya just squeeze with ur upper leg and knee.u want ur heels down really far. and relax just take a deep breath but keep ur position and then u will be relaxed and still have nice posture. good luck!
great song (i ♥ Relient K =D) and i HAVE NO IDEA what saddleseat is, sorry! I'd love to help but it's kinda pointless to help someone do something you don't have a clue! ahaha
just a few little things maybe to look at ! i would say try to keep your elbows back more . chin up ! you want to look snobby . like your the best . idk if its possible but maybe speed up her canter . but you look really good ! oh and just a little equitation thing you want to try and flare your legs out and not have ur calf touching her sides . but this is just some advice lol ,
Thanks but please read the description. She is part QH so of course she's gonna look like one :) She's my western/huntseat pleasure horse, we're just doing SS for a couple classes on our high school eq team. I'm not trying to train her to act like a saddlebred.
Ok, so ur eq is really good but ur horse is going a bit 2 slow and is holding its head like a qh (no offense, it just needs some liveliness) it doesnt really need action, just get its head up and make sure her head is almost vertical (even though ur riding eq u need to paint a pretty pic) and last but not least keep ur elbows pinned 2 ur sides
Looking good girl! Love the pivots, they're perfect! :)

You did great for your first time! Here are some tips=)
Try to flare your heels up and have the heels down. Also, in equitation, some put their away from the stomach=)
Another tip to have your hands up just a lil bit more and angle your elbows
I hate this rule so much and this was the worst for me is chin up
Great job!
