I saw the original broadcast and was a bit pissed that it wasn't til reading the credits at the end, which credited the actors, that they reveal it was fake, not that I really doubted it, but in principle, they should have said at the start it was fiction, or based on an allegedly true incident.

JourneyAnyway is incorrect. They had VIDEO cameras since the late 60's. There was beta, beta SP, VHS & super8. I had a super8 camera in 1988. this was filmed in Super8. My guess is this. This video has the best acting I've ever seen or the guy filming didn't tell his family about this and they were reacting as it was real. Aliens look ahhh but again I never seen an alien just 2 ufos in my time. I'm a digital artist and have worked on tons of video production work and this is real video.

If a video camera breaks, it is not going to show snow, the screen would just go black. Also...remember back when this was supposed to be filmed, there was no digital media yet, that means cameras were still using old school film. Why would you see snow or white noise on old school film after a camera broke. Completely amateur mistake by the director.

If you look at the three aliens bodies closely at the end of this clip, you can tell that they are all the same body width.. you can see they walk very robotic and in a very similar order, almost like zombies.. I think that's very hard to fake if it's made up..

Also this is the real one and the government made the 2nd reinactment to confuse people. All of the original footage has been destroyed and they gave this footage to a japanese show for laughs so people won't think it's real.

In the real one it ends like this... The boy holding the camera gos upstairs into a SMALL bedroom then turns to face the door he came through. The alien is right there and grabs the camera from the boy, then turns it to the boy who is absolutely frozen. The recording then stops. The only beings in the room are the boy and the alien. It's a bedroom not a bathroom. The family members were getting red dots on thier backs. The family members were reacting in such a way as you would expect.

I've seen the actual abduction video on t.v in 1993. There are 3 versions in total of the same video. Two fake ones, and one real one. One of the reasons I know the original was real is the fact that a lot of effort has gone into covering up the original footage. I don't know who did the cover up. The original one is convincing , very much unlike the fake ones. Original copies burned in a fire? I don't buy it.
