  • Yeah, we do this stuff with real swords made of steel.

  • if any of you guys are in the muncie indiana area your more than welcome to look us up we do a mix of heavy boffers and S.C.A. heavy fighting we are part of the shire

  • how old do u have to be to join the sca

  • To join? One day old.

To fight, it depends on where you are and what type of fighting you want to do. For this type, you will need to be 16 or 18 in most places. Other combat types can be started earlier.

  • I see armor in every video, and im trying to find out where they get it. Im planning on joining to SCA, and I cant find out anywhere how to get the type of stuff you need.

  • We make it, the only thing is to buy armor you'd have to go to the event and find a smithie or do it your self. You can get helmets and such on ebay though.

  • Im fairly new (Not even in it, but doing some research, and Dad told me) But to fight in the SCA the standard is 16 years old. Though, I did hear about some type of child program they were making with foam swords and stuff, but I dont know if they ever did it. Me and my friend will join very soon, I just have to wait for him to turn 16 in a few months lol

  • thrust thrust! stab him in the face! just take that sword right over your shield and stab him! all that swatting can be seen a mile away buddy! good job though =)

  • I like that attitude there. Positively encouraging and helpful at the same time. Youtube needs more comments like yours. XD

  • thanks =) I'm an arma student, swordfighting is what I do. nothing like a good bout to get the blood going, and the best part about swordsmanship, as opposed to football or what not, is that anyone can do it regardless of size or strength. so while with football most people can really just cheer, with swordsmanship, anyone can get involved. fighting and watching people fight is both fun though.

  • Yup. Very fun. XD

  • My opponent didn't have a thrusting tip on his sword, so that option wasn't available. Good idea though. ;)

He did a great job for a beginner!

    (In the shiny armour)

  • you guys would pass out if you saw arma practice. very little safety gear, and really only rule is to try and avoid killing or maiming your opponent. it can be brutal, but for the most part things go pretty well.

  • I would love to try Arma - it is fascinating, and I would relish the closer parallels to real medieval combat. Great! Unfortunately, it is hard to find here.

I think that one small advantage we have over Arma is that our system allows full contact full speed mass battles with excellent safety, realistic impact and loads of adrenalin. :) For smaller groups, I would prefer something more like Arma.

  • that's true, though you'll find that brute force really isn't the key with european swordsmanship as the misconception is. most swords weighed only a couple pounds and velocity and precision played larger roles. when you were fighting someone with full plate armor, it wasn't possible to smash through the armor with a sword, so you'd hold the sword half-sword and use it like a pike to jab into the chinks of the armor. hense why the bastard sword evolved.

  • I'm pretty sure that historical armour was pretty thin, I've heard 22 gauge, a good solid two-handed blow (with proper edge placement)from a sharp sword should have no problem.

As for bastard sword poking while half-swording, I believe using the weapon like a spear or pike was not the only advantage. If you were to whiff a diagonally downwards swing, you switch to a halfsword grip and take a swing with the back edge. I think Tucks(estocs) were the real two-handed pokey swords.

  • bastard swords were supposed to be a good balance of cut and thrust. I've helped my teacher get into his armor, I can't say it'd be impossible to cut through it with a sword, but it's definately not something you really want to do, for the same reason ya don't want to parry with your edge. Do it enough times and your sword will break and probabally when ya least want it to.

  • A fully armour knight could stand about 1-3 blows from an axe or sword, if a spear was aimed right it would possibly take him down in one to cut through the armor with a sword it would have to be hell of a strike

  • hense why bastard swords tapered down and lots of techniques were developed holding the sword by the blade. Not only did it make it much more wieldy while in rank and file where you can't swing so much but you can jam it directly into the kinks of the armor.

  • Thanks Crowbarr. We are lucky to have such a picturesque practice site.

  • what the fuck? these guys have more balls than you do you shit.

they hit full contact with the equivalent of a bat, and you are saying they have no pubes?

you like boxing or wrestling? this is like that, but with sticks. god damn your a fucktard.

why the fuck were you watching anyway?

if you don't like it, i can understand, but they are not retards or anything. you little prick.

  • mmm that was directed at PFCDickSimmons btw...

  • @poopwadmcgee Steel Weapons still are more Badass, i dont like this SCA Stuff, its pseudo... A Stick is not a sword.

  • @Yrmwulf Have you ever taken a blow from one of these? Obviously not. Do you know anything about SCA combat? From the sounds of it, no.Think about what SCA fighting is for a second, here. You go out onto the field and fight, ACTUALLY fight with people. This means you are taking blows from two inch thick wooden rods from all angles to every part of your body, including your head. Now, do steel weapons sound like a sensible thing to be using while doing this?

  • @UniqelyNerdy Duh! Thats what i do with steel u rocket scientist. Fuck your sticks.

  • @UniqelyNerdy I understand what ur saying and I still kind of like SCA but in Europe we do it with real life steel weapons but accordingly we use heavier and thicker steel armor. I see SCA is fun and less dangerous but I sill prefer heavy fighting with steel. Try for example the movie from the battle of Grunwald "From Dust and steel" on youtube

  • @Piotreksus Hi! This is in Europe - if you listen carefully you might hear we are speaking German.

I have done both steel and rattan fighting, and I personally prefer rattan. With steel, you have "real" weapons, but with rattan, you have a "real" fight - aiming for the head and eyes, using full force, doing everything to trick your opponent.

But it's purely a matter of personal preference - there's room for both games! (and steel sounds much cooler) :)

  • @Yrmwulf I like steel weapons too, but I don't like getting hit with them. It might ruin your day. Besides a real sword or something might go into a slot in the helm, and that my friend might ruin your life.

  • @Yrmwulf And yet, Miyamoto Musashi ( the greatest swordsman in Japan) fought over sixty duels and won them all. In many of these duels he used wooden swords against opponents armed with real katanas.

  • I would just like to say, as someone who is an MMA fighter, the SCA is pretty freakin epic...In fact I'm saving up for gear to join this. I've done martial arts since I was 8, and always wondered about European martial arts, besides boxing I had no idea. As a martial artist, I can say these guys gear up, and hit HARD. Went and watched some guys, guy had me put on his breastplate and hit me, just so I could see. And it does HURT. Punch me all day... But Rattan sticks suck! Can't wait to start! =D

  • Umm, that's not pretend fighting. It's an inch and a half thick piece of wood, making full contact with to your head.

  • good to see someone teaching us newbies, and in such a wicked environment too.
