The latter part of this video is BS... You raise a black box to your eye, and anyone on the street looking at you could care less whether it's an RF vs. SLR+prime lens, or if its 1.3 inches bigger or smaller, or if the shutter is 10 db vs. 25 db. They know what you're doing. All DSLRs can be manually exposed and focused. Leica makes superb products, but you've drank the Kool Aid if you believe it's the only best one for street photos.
I really liked this video but try not to sell Leica so much, also any camera is good. It doesn't matter if it's rangefinder or not, it's all about person behind the camera.
complaining about how they are too hard to focus just shows how limited your knowledge of photography is. one can effectively point and shoot them using scale hyperfocal focusing, for example. but hey letting your camera do all the work for you has its charms i guess, if thats what you're in to.
He talk's about rangefinders. Not leicas in particular, apart from the fact that leica is the particular rangefinder brand he uses. You can buy rangefinder caemras for $20. This whole 'leicas are expensive toys' thing is getting really old. People love them and they love them for very good reasons, the style of shooting is very different. if you don't own one, then you will never know why people love them.
1. Using a leica will not make your photography better. Nor will using a Nikon or Canon.
2. Leicas are not expensive. Buy used and you can have an M4 and Leica lens for about $1500. My M2 setup cost about $600 in total, which is no more than what most people spend on an entry level DSLR kit.
But being a rangefinder user myself, I'm not so sure I prefer it to SLRs for street. SLRs are quicker, more versatile. Then again, 99% of the street photography I see makes me say "Why do I care about this frame??". So I'm not a huge street fan to begin with and done shoot a lot of it even though I'm a huge fan of people-watching. Also, I'm a very disciplined photographer with regard to framing, so maybe the benefit of rangefinders is something that doesn't apply to me. I dunno...very confusing.
@MasterJediTimm It seems we have more in common than just Religio Politico. Trained in portrait photography myself and spent 15 years in the field professionally. You being a street photographer you'll have a lot to keep your shutter snapping in these coming years with the coming invasion you have been jesuitically helping foment.
Do you not have family or loved ones in the States that you care about? Or are they and you, all guaranteed safe haven by your "handlers" in Jesuit Videodrome Land?
damn, I was hoping for a video on street photography too but in the end I had heard the word rangefinder and Leica being dropped so many times that I couldn't really take it serious anymore
one other thing that irked me, the one guy said a rangefinder allows him to interact with his subjects yet i didnt see him talking to any of them in the video?
@riceboy890 he's pretty much just taking the words straight from Leica's marketing material like most delusional rangefinder users, mainly old men who like expensive toys.
i came in hoping for a street photography doc and got a leica infomercial mixed with a lot of cliche. i think you had good intentions but spent too much time talking about gear and the idea of street photography. the idea of street photography isnt too hard to grasp. wish you spent more time talking about things like composition and technique instead of things like how great rangefinders are.
@sdeary1 I'm sorry it was meant to be a joke. My humour does get me into trouble sometimes...I hope you will forgive me...and anybody who thinks they can do decent street photography with a shitty compact is fooling themselves..or trying to fool t he rest of us. I do however do okay with my dslr haha...rangefinders are fascinating and of course most of the masters used them...and still do I guess...sorry for any misunderstanding!
@writerman242 haha its fine, you should try street photography in glasgow, its an absolute mission, as soon as the camera comes out everyone becomes aggressive :/
So im not artistic because I use a canon? He's just trying to be unique, like everyone else.

Also, "if used properly", even a pinhole camera will also "make a better photographer".
An artist without vision will remain as such regardless of what tool s/he uses. An artist with a unique vision will make unique art with any camera.

Starts off good, ends up being just a rangefinder and Leica advert. I'm talking about a lot of part 2 too.

I just don't have $6000 to spend on a Rangefinder.
Compendium34 1 week ago 5
@Compendium34 then spend less. Not everyone needs a digital rangefinder.

I love analogue life... I live in a digital world
I still shoot film... and digital photography is good
I love writing a letter... and email is also good and fast
I love Patek Philipe hand-winding watches... and also "precise Seiko quartz-watches"
I love biking... and having a fancy car is also cool
Leica for life
etc.

I own and love "anthracite Leica MP" + 35cron... cos I just wanna be different (but not quite discreet tho)
but it's not about the camera... it's about "the moment"
I love classicism and minimalism. Leica for life.
I also like digital too, I would say that "iPhone+instagram/tadaa" = the most practical camera for me now lol
=== IT's SUBJECTIVE why / how WE LOVE LEICA===
===SO leave us alone if some of you DON't like LEICA===

1 thing LOL
Forget Leica everything if you are a begginer and you can't afford Leica, buy a little Ricoh grd 3/4.
It's small extremely fast, it's digital and cheap.
I have one,and now i can say " I don't need to have a Leica!!"
