Hee, hee, ha, ha! Donald Shuterland's character "Oodball" is one of the main reasons I loved this classic all-star lined up of a movie! Drama and dark at times, but the cliches' and goofy wartime yuk yuks make this gem of a production to watch! Made during a time when America dealt with the present world problems by making a somewhat political-correct dark comedy on WW II. "The three Kings" starring George Cooney brought this story up to date. But Eastwood and Savalas still rule it best.
Arries, on the movie soundtrack by Lalo Schifrin, it's called Close Order Drill, but I'm not sure what the real name is, if it has one. Anyway, do a google search on "Lalo Schifrin close order drill" and look for website Filmscoremonthly (about the 7th one listed) & you can listen to it there. It's the 11th track, "Close Order Drill." Maybe you can find a place where you can download it, or you can download it at that site using something like Download Helper, a Firefox add-on.
When I heard the song they were playing during the march I started singing "You're in the Army now. You ain't behind a plow. You're digging a ditch. You son of a bitch. You're in the Army now.".
You missed the radio operator is 'Angel' from the Rockford Files. The tank mechanic is 'Captain Stubing' from Love Boat. The general? 'Archie Bunker' from All in the family and the German tank commander (Karl Otto Alberty) is in dozens of WW2 movies.
I've seen it 3 times at the cinema,1st time when it was released, god knows how many times on video and tv, I got the special edition CD and soundtrack album and I still watch it when its on TV...its that good.
Say for the first time in 1971 in Honduras Central America. It was called "El Botin de los Valientes". I have the VHS and the DVD, I love the theme at the end. I must have seen this at least 30 times.
Oddball needs to become a meme.
