  • *Grandson looking out the window*: "Oh my god, the engines are on fire!!!"

*Grandfather*: "Hehe. You've never been on a real plane, huh son?"

  • Goose bump time!!

  • You panic when there's no flame !!!!

  • I got to fly in one going from Travis AFB to Tokyo. just past the point of no return on the leg to Hawaii, one of the outboard engines caught fire. we made it in to Honolulu on 3. It checked out ok and we went on. That engine fell off on the way to Midway. We had 5 days there while another engine was flown in from the states. The rest of the trip went smooth as silk, I love that plane! It beat the hell outta the DC-3 we flew from Pennsylvania to SF.

  • That fire is POWER!!!!

  • "There's a rumble in the (aviation) jungle." Round engines forever!

  • oh..that sound....that cool sound...

  • Afterburners...cool!

  • This plane used to be with Qantas.

  • they were nicknamed "best triple-engine plane in transatlantic flight" because one of the radial engines always caught fire on long distance flights.

  • Wow! When they say "Fire-up the engines", they really mean it!!!

  • The Constellation was an incredible plane but I can't believe Hughes invested in them when jets were right around the corner.

  • Never knew radials had afterburner:-P

  • @bassplaya1549 of course they do... they start to burn after a while.

  • lean mixture

a good old radial engine i like it

  • Power!

  • Mixture a little too rich is all!

  • true meaning of an afterburner lol

  • To me, this is one of the most beautiful aircraft ever.

  • Designed to do it, yellow = Rich as its taking off then Blue in flight!

  • Designed to do it, yellow = Rich as its taking off then Blue in flight!

  • Burbank's best.

  • I had a couple of rides in Connies, back in the day....1958-1959

  • @GutpileCharlie I envy you!!!!:):)

  • so beautiful...

  • Now based at HARS at Albion Park, NSW, Australia. The only flying Super Connie left in the world.

  • So many of these planes crashed back in the day when they was populer.

  • Might want to lean that mixture out there buddy, and that comment is also coming from the 15 other Fedex pilots watching this video, so it wasn't just me before everyone starts pointing the finger!

  • Rich mixtures are always used for takeoff and high power settings and climb to keep cylinder head temperatures lower.

  • I love connies !!! .They are fancy, sleek, and have a sensual curved shape. No other liner is nicer than a aconstellation

  • @jgustavs

    Except for a DC-6/7..........

  • when I was 3 in 63 I flew on one when my dad was in the AF. I remember looking out the airplane window at night seeing the flames I'll never forget it.

  • @stargazer444 Stargazer, I was 5 and I too still remember the blue flames that I will never forget, wish I could relive that moment, good to hear you loved it too, thought I was the only one, ha.

  • fuck turboprops this baby aint nothin without them smoky purring old radials

  • I would love to see a connie with turbo props like it was done with the bassler bt67(dc3 with fitted PT6 turb prop)

  • Then you would have a tri tailed Bristol Britainnia.

  • i have been on that plane

  • She is beautiful. One of the most elegant airliners of any age. The Douglas' and Boeing's couldn't (and still can't) hold a match to the Connies' lines! Perhaps only Concorde matches........

  • My Dad works on this plane.....prop service last friday.

  • I was priveleged enough to fly on that actual aircraft back in 1999 or 2000 (can't quite remember) during my time in the Australian Air Force Cadets. It was at the old Adelaide Airport Int. terminal, and we were able to 'hitch a ride' back to Edinburgh RAAF base on it. Amazing experience... I'll never forget the awesome sound and sight of flames belching out the exhausts. Beautiful aircraft.

  • The Connie is a gem. No doubt. I have a b/w photo of my mom sitting on a terrace at Heathrow airport in '54 with Connies and DC6's in the background & also a DC3.

  • Are there any connies that are still flying in America?

  • would be so sweet Eh?

  • Super!

    Flight with Wright R3350-CB1 ???

    kai

  • Is this a 1649? Long live 3350!

    Wally Tabor

  • She is a 1049.

If I recall correctly, there is no airworthy 1649 left.

  • i am just wondering, but what are the differences between these two variants?

  • isnt she beautiful...thanks for sharing:)

  • no words can discribe.

  • Well Powertampa, if you move a few degrees from ANY POINT point in a sphere around the Connie, you suddenly be surprised from an structure you didnt wait ! Thats genius masterpiece, just like Leonardo´s MonaLisa ! What other object in modern world have such a design perfomance in space ?

  • Awesome plane. I got to go in it at the Avalon Airshow. Looks great inside. I got to go inside the cockpit. It also looked great.

    Great plane. Well done HARS

  • Mixture rich, spark retarded... gotta love it!

  • Connie is absolutely one of the most beautiful planes ever made! Todays propellers should be ashamed of. I really wish that someday, somewhere I'd be able to be onboard one of these Connies which are still in flyable condition and flying.

  • They no doubt had the mixture set at full

rich on the engines for take off, thus the flames from the exhaust.

  • "Folks, don't worry about that little bit of fire from the engines... unless it goes out..."

  • @louswire Penguin 1 - How do you know we're out of fuel? Penguin 2 - That red light has stopped flashing and the engines are no longer on... FIRE!!!,

    LOL>

  • @louswire Why is it bad is the fires go out? Does that mean that the engine will shut off?

  • man why did "f"ing jets come along? These radial engine planes just ROCK!!!

  • The Turbo Compund versions of the R-3350 seems to 'blow' more flame on full rich full throttle...perhaps because there's a li'l turbine spinning in the stacks at over 12,000rpm.

    Awesome plane.

  • this happen often cuz the old engines dont burn every single piece of the feul and when the fuel which isnt burned comes out of the engine it burns cuz of the hot engine

  • Awesomwe! Simply awesome! What a demostration of power and majesty!

  • Is it me or does the Super Constellation look like the German Condore patrol planes?

  • The Constellation looks a great deal like the Focke Wulf 200 Condor. Perhaps that's why they are my two favorite multi-engined piston aircraft. They don't make them with this kind of style and grace anymore! What a breathtaking thing watching this beautiful old bird take off at night!

  • 4 3350's...what a sound. The flames are a bonus!

  • A Real Air Plane !!!

  • holy shit, awesome

  • beautiful!
