  • Thanks for the many comments posted here and on my othe vids. Sorry it's been so long since I updated here. If the demand exists I would like to expand upon this lesson with some more vids over the next couple of weeks!

    Regards

    Paul

  • Great playing, great lesson, tks from Barcelona !!

  • great, thank you...I really needed something to add to my basic minor pentatonic rudimentary leads. good video.

  • Thanks.......great licks...

  • THank you, this answers my questions on how to get that "Jazz" sound...

It's those in-between notes and sliding into them and jumping around.

    Thank you!

    Dm

  • I really enjoyed this lesson. I think it's great that you are using the blues to help draw people a little bit into the world of Jazz, it really will benefit musicians of all types!

  • nice tele. Is that the G E Smith model?

  • This is the explanation and demo I've been waiting for. Not just chords, but those fine bluesy lead licks that trace the augmented and diminished chords. What a great sound so uniquely guitar. Nothing's quite like it. Many thanks!

  • START PLAYING FK !!!

  • GREAT lesson Paul. Appreciate it LOTS. Opened a few doors for me for sure. Keep it up !!

  • You got the right notes!!, now, add "emotional content"

  • what scale did you use it?? from france thank's

  • Very very useful. This is what I was trying to figure out. Didnt realise it was just addition of 2 notes. But i guess a lot depends on the feel as well. Thanks again

  • fantastic tutorial sir! thank you for willing to spend time to make dis tutorial!

    =D great stuff for sure!

  • thanks Paul!

    you are the cats meow!

  • an you are awesome !!!

  • I recently started picking jazz... and i always wondered what sort of scales to use... and you sir... is my God. :)

Thank you so much for this. you helped me figured in out within 9 minutes 29 seconds.

I'm getting closer and closer !

  • Thank you fine sir. I always mess with this scale(its like the only one I know) for the blues. Now I see more possibilities. Eureka! =P

  • That third really does add a different sound. Rather than bending the C.

  • im new too swing blues

i enjoyed it very much , thanks for a very easy ang good lesson

    im more inspired

  • Great tutorial Sir!

    Many thanks!

  • very nice...very musical. I like your teaching style and humble attitude. I learned something here today

  • Im from Montenegro I always watching your Lesson its greyt !!! thanks man !

  • tidy lesson a closer view of the fretboard would be better! but its helpful ta

  • Great lesson!Thank you for sharing!

  • Great lesson. Teaches me a lot; and you make sense. Cheers

  • bravo

  • you should rather do it in B-flat or F in order to make it sound jazzier, right?

    good lesson, anyway

  • B-flat is a very good choice for jazzier sound,I think it's better than F!

  • As far as I know, playing in Bb or in F won't make it jazzier but it'll be easier to play for the horns and other instruments in Bb who have to transpose a major second higher (whom you will accompany).

  • Bb is the the key of C for transposing Bb horns (trumpets, alto sax and clarinet, trombones). This makes it easier for them to play. F is the second easiest to play, (it is actually easier in songs with a dominant tonality) since it transposes to G on those instruments.

F is a very common key for blues for exactly that reason.

  • Nice work. Nice clean tone too.

  • ill stick to my 3 chord pop punk ...thanks

  • good idea, this is a place for skillful musicians, go back to your busted, kaiser chiefs stuff.

    Pauls the man, great lesson!

  • Thanks Paul. What you do with a few notes is incredible. Great tips.

Are you familiar with John Hornby Skewes - music dist? They are tops in the U.K.

Also, if you attend the musik Messe, let me know.

  • great lesson man :-)

  • Thank You!! Great lesson!! Very Very Helpful!!!

  • thank you so much i have a jazz band audition for guitar tomorrow and i have three other people trying out. I played guitar last year for jazz band but our band director changed it so we have to audition. I'm kinda worried cause i love playing jazz, but at the same time the other players are good guitar players but they play heavy metal and they also don't no as many jazz chords as i do. The real only thing one of them had over me is improvising solos, hes alittle better then me. This helpedalot

  • cool man, i'm one of those players who started with metal but now i've been studying jazz for a couple years, if you wanna exchange tips on how to get better at jazz it'd be cool, we could probably help each other out.

  • If I could find an instructor like you, I would sign-up in a minute !

  • I had to come back and comment on your great lesson. I'm a guitar instructor as well. I love your approach and your ideas for this swing style in A is terrific! Thanx again.

  • Great lesson!

  • Good stuff. I'm subscribin....6000 stars

  • this is such a wonderful lesson! how could anybody give this less than 5 stars? i'm gonna do some serious plagerizing here!

  • gracias men

  • couldn't really follow your fingers on the vid, but it sounded more like a major pentatonic with a couple minor pentatonic notes thrown in.

  • Great lesseon with good ideas!!! Thank you so much. Greetings from Germany.

  • thank you so much!

  • Fantastic! Do you have any videos for 2-5-1 chord changes with this style?

  • thanks...

  • this guy chats a bit too much.

    more guitar playing, less chatter.

  • LOL but hes teaching us and a great teacher at that :)

  • Thanks a lot for the comments everyone!

I'm using a Fenix Telecaster copy (recently sold to number one student -Harry).

This is going into a POD2 into my PC, nothing fancy.

There's lots more to show you, and some backing tracks to upload once I get myself into action again, hopefully very soon.

    Thanks again!

    Paul

  • thanks so much. what a great lesson - and just what i needed to break me out of some of my existing pentatonic patterns

  • that was gud i learnt alot!

  • wt amp are u usin there coz it sounds really gud!

  • I dig the D-sharp! Nice sounds.

  • thanks for that, exactly what i've been looking for....to get past only strumming chords :D

  • This would be the single best guitar lesson I've had (and I've had many years of them) A combination of your fine playing making me determined to learn, and me only recently finding the manual dexterity (heaps of daily execise folks) to actually be able to copy you. Great teaching, THANKS HEAPS

  • Thanks Paul, your a really nice player with v good technique, I spend a lot of time on technique and probably don't know so much about what to actually play but you've definitely thrown some light on it with your video's. Thanks a lot.

  • ill...what kind of amp kind of amp are you using?

  • well done thats opened some doors for me. thank you.

  • very good !

  • very good !

  • great, THANKS

  • thanks paul, a great intro to jazzy blues.

  • Great sound and tips!!

  • Thanks Paul. A Great Help!

  • it is not easy,,

  • It sounds so good, I love it .

  • it really sounds great! but i can´t learn even a little bit from you, it´s much too fast for me, i can´t see wht you are doing. i´d like to play like that but after plying the jazzguitar for 2 month it seems to be too difficult for me.

    but: you play great!

  • It isn't easy to follow a guitarist's moves on YouTube. Get a copy of Corey Christiansen's Jazz scales for guitar. This scale is in there, along with loads of others. Then you'll be able to see what Paul is doing. Above all DON'T give up.

    Regards

    John

  • excellent playing,..../great guitar?/help my get some free notes, maby some webs for free notes

  • I've seen so many similar videos in the past and found myself frustrated. Not sure why but you simplify it. Truly appreciate your instruction technique. THANKS!

  • Thanks for the comments everyone! This vid has proved to be very popular, and I am building myself for a follow up!

I don't have any tabs at the moment, but may consider putting up some lick based vids as a kind of breakdown of what I play.

    Thanks again.

  • Very lucid and helpful - not to say beautifully played.
