i thought it was much better than series 7- 8, it was more like series 5-6. it really surprised me. i hated the last two series but this was much better, the characters were as they should be, it was funny in places and i thought it was quite clever. Red dwarf is never gonna be as good at the first 6 series , but this was a great effort and much more like the original series. series 7 -8 were terrible.

I agree. People say things like "it's crap compared to the old ones" yet the last two series were TERRIBLE!! Not Red Dwarf at all, more like a lame ITV sitcom. This latest special was a return to form and a much more worthy installment.

it a well made point (both opinions) i think doug naylor has brought red dwarf into the 21st century and has made a good effort with the storylines the mini series was alot better than series 7 and 8 and was very funny. series 10? fan smeggin tastic!!!

Its so weird seeing people who liked series 7 & 8 dislike these specials. The only thing series 7 & 8 did for me was teach me if I wanted to enjoy Red Dwarf in the slightest ever again, I needed to stop expecting Rob and Doug material, and just expect Dougs efforts.

Sure enough, Ive come away so far thoroughly enjoying the two specials I have seen. Its not as good as old Rob & Doug together Dwarf, but it comes fairly close. I cant wait for the final ep.

'tell me why rimmer is dead again?', I thought Death talking too Rimmer at the end of 'Only The Good' would be a hint. But I must say the jokes in this episode were awful. They went for slapstick more than real gags

i agree that is probably the reason he is dead again but i just think it would have made sense for him to still be alive as holograms dont get older and rimmer being alive would have coverered up the fact that chris barrie clearly was.

true, no real explanations but i must admit after watching all 3 episodes i was less disapointed than i was after the first 2, i thought the last episode was good. as for your comment on rimmers hologram, i see one problem with that explanation, the older rimmer hologram wouldnt have been older because rimmer died 9 years ago and would have been the hologram image of him 9 years ago and would have looked like rimmer did in series 8, as i said before holograms dont age.

I agree. The old series had the most basic effects and it added to the charm I think. It needs to be FUNNY as it's a COMEDY..Not a serious sci fi.

Yeah but just having better effects won't make it non-funny. The original series had cheap, if charming, effects due to its budget, not an artistic intention. It seems they managed to keep the visual style, and that's what matters.

Red Dwarf was actually had a very large budget, it was on of the BBCs most expensive shows at the time. It's just all the money was spent on set design, costume and hiring 30 nazis for Ace Rimmer to take out

Well, there's nothing wrong with highly improvised special effects per se. Star wars used drug boxes for the surface of the Death Star and slowed-down cat meows for the tie fighter engine sound.

For the new RD, there was enough money for professional CGI, also due to the fact it got incomparably cheaper and more advanced over the last ten years.

If these resources were available for the first series, they would have no doubt tapped them.

There is a higher quality version of the video going around, so this is not a youtube matter. It's not so much the photorealism of the CGI, but whether the characters look like they are really in those spaces. I can't quite put a finger on why, but to me in a lot of those close-ups (for example at 9 seconds in) the characters look pasted-in and the shot not quite finished. But as I've said, there's a lot in the trailer that looks intriguing, and I'm looking forward to the episodes.

yeh and without a hugly insaine budget they get for high end movies then u won't get the graphics ur after. yeh its cheaper to do effects these days than it was but even so. u can only spend so much money and time on a scene. Seeing as this spans across 3 episodes now and not the 2 original planned i can safly say this seems about right. and actualy the quality of the shots look impressive compaired to most of the junk u get on tv series these days
