I think the fact some people need subtitles for this film is good. Rather than tone down the accent so people understand, he has kept the realism

wow...ewan sounds COMPLETELY different here. i wonder if thts how he really sounded back then, and he has gradually lost his accent, or if he emphasized his normal accent a lot more in this movie...

He grew up in the Scottish town of Crieff, so this would more or less be his normal accent when he is with his Scottish pals, or whatever. He may have "hammed" it up a bit, as he was meant to be with drug-taking lowlife in this film. Most Scots can moderate their accent naturally if speaking to someone English for example, like I had to do today when I made a business telephone call to London. So Ewan could soon slip back into what was his normal Scottish accent.

@graceofacat Trainspotting is an activity where you spot the numbers on trains passing by and record them. It's a pretty pointless game. Irvine Welsh chose it as the title of his book about young drug addicts in Edinburgh - so it's probably a parallel of how drugs pull you into this cycle of doing nothing except what it takes to get more drugs. But it's up to to each person's interpretation.

The title trainspotting refers to "track marks" on a drug addicts arm.

p.s. i actually heard the director say that way back when the film was being released. But the idea of those track marks being symbolic of a pointless and depressing journey into self destruction, is pretty in keeping with the concept of the book and film.

@graceofacat this scene isn't in the film because it probably more symbolic of how his friends got him into drugs. Getting into heroin is like having your friends tie your head to a railroad track. One way or another you're pretty much done for.

@graceofacat in the 80s there was a drug rehab centre in edinburgh that was an old railway station/building so people who where giving up drugs were said to have gone" trainspotting " or people who said they are going to quit would say " i am going trainspotting "
