It's bittersweet to see Terry just 9 years before his death, looking so healthy and happy. His version of Suspicion will always be the definitive version of the song. I don't think Elvis' version even comes close. God Bless Terry...we miss you and love you.
Elvis recorded the song first.. and it was an album track on the "Pot Luck" album. RCA didn't release Elvis version' of the song, as a single until after Terry's version had been released as a single. Too late and a missed opportunity for RCA and Elvis. The faster tempo and the girls doing the backing vocal.. add some magic to Terry's version. Both Terry Stafford and Elvis Presley do a great job on this song.
Terry's version is great and so is Amarillo by Morning which he co-wrote with a guy who's name escaped me but Elvis sang Suspicion in 1962 and it was written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman with Elvis in mind check it out if anyone's interested Terry had a hit with it in 1964 and I think I may like it better than Elvis' version though both are great as are Terry's version of Amirillo by Morning and George's also
This MC says Terry Stafford wrote Suspicion? It was written by the legendary Hall of Famer Doc Pomus & his co writer Mort Shulman. I love Elvis- been to Graceland and more. But without a doubt Terry Stafford does the best job on this. He puts his own sound on it. It's all in the studio, production, engineering and artist that make the tune. Of course the song has to be there first. It all started with Doc.
After listening to Elvis's version it now seems obvious that a lot of Terry's arrangement was copied from Elvis's version. The big difference is the female backup which Elvis version does not have. It does wonders for the song! I once read in an Elvis bio that some young singer had heard an unreleased song at Elvis's home (in California I think it was.) The story goes that this unknown singer got the song out and Presley was peeved, but did nothing. He said, "Let the little b___ have his hit !"
Terry Stafford, well I never,he's MUCH better than that numpty Elvis ever was.
What clown said he was an 'Elvis clone'?,they want their ears washed out thoroughly with candle wax!!.Great stuff Terry and thanks for putting this one on here Joel,Murray in Scotland.
i saw terry stafford and his then backgroup group, the frantics at glen echo park in washington, d.c. back in 1964. An under-rated talent. He also debuted i'll touch a star that day.
Joel: It's amazing how much he looked like the late Jimmy Orion Ellis here! I have a 45 by Terry where he sounds a lot like Roy Orbison, but Ellis always sounded like Elvis and couldn't change his voice if he wanted to! Don't get me wrong! Terry was great! Sincerely, Joe
Elvis is the original artist on this song having recorded it in 1962 and this guy recording it in 1964. This guy ain't no comparison to "The Hillbilly Cat." This guy isn't much in comparison to anyone from the terrible way he sounds on this.
Check out Vivian Stanshall of the Bonzo Dog Band's version. Very funny. "Please give me some proof of your love. Have it on my desk in triplicate by Monday".
Wow, This is fabulous! One of my favorite songs from the early 60's. Great video, great sound! What a treasure to hear and see Terry do this great song live. One of the best on Utube. Thanks for posting!
Great version of the song. Stafford did not write this. Doc Pumus wrote this as he did so many Elvis songs. Supposedly Elvis was friendly with Stafford and Stafford took the demo from Elvis' house and recorded it before Elvis got the first crack.
What an awesome talent. If you'd like to check out a remake of this classic, produced by Bob Summers visit my profile. Bob not only played all the instruments on Terry's version but on the new one as well. Terry was a great friend and Bob is one awesome individual as well.

On this date in 1964 {Feb. 22nd} "Suspicion" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100; eventually it peaked at #3 and spent 15 weeks in the Top 100.
Ranked 22nd on Billboard's Year-End Hot 100 Singles of 1964 chart...
Originally recorded by Elvis Presley in 1962 for his album "Pot Luck with Elvis"...
This version reached #31 on the U.K. Singles chart; in 1976 Elvis released his version in the U.K. and it peaked at #9...

Terry Stafford...Big Time now. Great Respect.
Playing with a bunch of poseurs more intent on being noticed by schoolgirls than actually keepeing time on a strum FGS.
Terry Stafford...Brilliant....I love Elvis, and I know he took the demo you did for him.
I truly wish you get your full royalties, because that is one BRILL song mate
