@StuUngar: Exactly. Right after HBK stuck it to Vince about his not be able to be fired & how HBK--as Commissioner--had say-so over all WWF competitors sans SCSA (in which case, Vinn-Man was himself a competitor the moment he entered into the 1999 Royal Rumble) & placed Vince as #2 to SCSA as #1, he hinted at a Stone Cold surprise for the exasperated Chairman, after which he turned to HHH & told the production team...
The attitude era was fantastic but it was only made to counter the rise of hardcore wrestling in ECW. In conclusion: No ECW, WCW wins the ratings war by such a margin that WWE goes out of business
Maybe I wasnt paying close enough attention around the time Triple H got punished, but I still think he had a big image still. Maybe he was a heel for a good long time, but all Vince did was spit on a raging fire. Still enough force left over.
@hello11197 Yeah but 5 months later that year became Intercontinental Champion for 4 months. Then next year went to Wrestlemania 13 beating Goldust. Next won '97s King of the Ring and from there created DX and became the hardcore rebel he is now. So its not like Vince's punishment hurt his face-time and image; and mechandising DX kept his wallet full.
And remember, one of those mid-carders back at that time was Matt Hardy. Triple H was a helping boost in quite a few headliners.
I am fucking pissed hhh haters here..i mean so what he married boss's daughter? can anyone of u haters say after his 15 years of contribution to wwe

He was in WCW before (do a youtube search for Jean-Paul Levesque or Terra Ryzing). He mostly tagged, and left when Bischoff wouldn't push him as a singles wrestler. I personally think it wouldn't have done much. You can't assume one wrestler can go to the other place and hold it down. Just look at Bret Hart. He went to WCW and should have had a HUGE ax to grind that WCW could have EASILY capitalized on, but thanks to the infamous WCW backstage politics, it went nowhere.
HHH is a soldier i'll give him that anybody else would've said screw you i quit went to WCW or ECW and enjoyed bliss. That would've meant no DX, so nothing to counter act stone cold and the nations Tough Guy image WWF would've gotten stale and we'd probably still have three companies.
God, is HHH an egomaniac. Austin was the by far #1. He needs to stop thinking he was a close second to Austin.......he wasn't. They were over, and yes, DX was very popular. But they were not Austin.
@patg316 I agree. And when Austin's flames started to settle (late '98 and going into '99). The Rock started to make a huge impact pushing DX further down the line.
if young superstars like randy orton come along and becoming a superstar like orton than attitude era will be reborn because orton is now at main event better than every superstars besides triple h,undertaker,& chirs jericho than wwe is better and turn 2 tv-14
I give HHH credit for putting up with getting punished for the MSG incident and still being able to climb his way back up and get to the top. Some wrestlers (especially those today) would've just given up.
The MSG incident was when Scott Hall, Kevin Nash, HHH, and HBK (two faces and two heels, can't remember who was which) hugged in the ring, breaking what's known as kayfabe. Since Hall and Nash were leaving and HBK was the champ, HHH was the only one who could be punished.

@HipnosisV1Games Not really WCW killed WCW with questionable decisions. REally things went downhill when Russo arrived Sure those guys helped but WCW sanked WCW themselves
@Reed019 Not to mention after his historic spot that I'm guessing wasn't scripted either in King of the Ring 1998 vs Taker in HIAC. I'll quote Gem, "after Mankind got thrown off the top of the cell and through that announce table, nobody cared about dubya see dubya...AAA-GAIN!"
Triple H is made...he's rich, he's got the boss's daughter, and has done it all. He should start slowing down so he doesn't end up too jacked up when he's old. And put some other wrestlers over while you're at it.
I know triple H gets a lot of sh** for marrying the boss's daughter but you gottat hand it to the guy as he certainley knew how to get ahead by association...as soon as he got to wwf he hooked straight up with Nash,Hall,Michaels and the rest as they say is history....
The Attitude era had nothing to do with HBK losing the title to Austin. Vince should have sacked HBK and HHH and run the company with Bret and Stone Cold at the top.
Then maybe 'douchebags' (haha, still cant believe you ended your comment with that) like you would worship merchandising machines like John Cena.
It was a house show back in the day before everyone had youtube, how many people then saw what went on? If it happened now it would be dif cos everyone would see it the next day but not people saw what happened back then.
Randy Orton isn't getting over on the fans, are you serious??? He's only the most hated wrestler in the WWE now which means he's doing a perfect job at selling his role which is to be the most hated. Orton is a great wrestler and will continue to grow into one of the best wrestlers this industry has seen.
@baba3231 Once again.....my first post was 5 months ago, when Orton was still a heel. I like that they are keeping his same traits that he had as a heel in his babyface persona but I think they still need to keep up his vicious side as well making him more of a shaded grey character. Who knows, maybe this is what can finally turn Cena into a heel
nWo to me is the best stable and storyline ever, because back then not everyone knew that wrestling was fake. So people really bought into the nWo thing. Not only that, because Eric Bischoff could spend a lot of money, he could sign so many popular wrestlers and group them up.
But I can see why DX is seen as more popular, because at one point, I did compare DX with the nWo, and the nWo seemed boring in comparison. DX did a lot of skits and college humour, and thus seemed more colorful.
nWo was way better at the time, but at the end DX did win the popularity battle. not cause they were better, but because the nWo had nothin else after they basically "took over" WCW and most of the wrestlers. I mean DX played it smart in only havin a couple members, nWo just grew "2big"
New World Order were just... nowhere near as awesome as DX. They had amazing members in it obviously, but like this says, DX was cutting edge. nWo just wasn't.
I miss Chyna from DX :( I hope they get another woman member soon :P
Triple H was suppose to win the King of the Ring that year? THANK GOODNESS the MSG incident happened!!! Stone Cold Steve Austin all the freakin' way!!!
Paul seems so candid here...But I think he'd not slept well before. I'm a fan of 80's wrestling, and wish some stars from that era could speak so honestly about all the incidents that'd happened then.
I knew how HHH was the one punished for the MSG incident, but i never knew it went to the extent that HHH and HBK couldnt even hang out together or even ride or be together backstage...that was crazy!
Basically what happened a while back, when HHH, HBK, Hall and Nash were in the clique, they each were in different match ups. Triple H wrestled as a bad guy against Scott Hall. HBK who wrestled as a good guy went against Nash. Hall and Nash were in their last match against HHH and HBK because they were going to WCW. When the match was done, they got together and group hugged in the middle of the ring and said their last goodbyes to each other. IT WASN'T IN THE SCRIPT.
They were all supposed to be punished for ruining the original script, but since Nash and Hall left for WCW and HBK was the WWF Champ, he couldn't get punished since he was main eventing, leaving Triple H to take the full heat. The punishment prolonged his rise to the top but eventually as you may know, it made little difference!
sure. vince specifically had it all. he made major mistakes. there were times since 2001 where WWE had some incredible moments. shawn michaels returning, the return of hulk hogan to the red and yellow, things like that. even the 2006 DX reunion, but these moments were not given proper chances to develop, with the exception of HBK's return.
I agree. When NWO returned I thought it was going to be a huge group, not just three superstars even though they were icons. The same goes for DX, I thought that at least they would feature Road Dogg, and X-pac but no, it was just two of them. I agree most memorable moments were not lived for long.
the attitude is the austin era,the attitude era officially begun when austin was given the title,he was the number 1 draw and the number 1 seller but their is no doubting that dx was special and highly entertaining and compulsive viewing.
Look, the HHH/Shawn DX was special. The DX afterwards (minus the Nation skit) was not great. In fact, I wasn't much of a fan. Rock, Foley, Austin, Taker.......these were the guys that really shined in the early stages of the Attitude era (1997-1999). HHH got better later. As for the "MSG Incident", they deserved to be punished, for you just don't break kayfabe like that. Plus, there was no point to it except to those four, and that was very selfish.
if you really think about it who has HHH had a good, memorable match with someone that isn't a big name superstar. He is just a product of his environment. I hate to say it but Scott Steiner was right about the fact that HHH got to where he is because of the Kliq and Stephanie.
I don't think Steiner was right at all! Did you even see how the MSG incident turned out? Triple H got punished for what Nash, Hall, and Michaels and he pulled off. At the King of the Ring Austin won, Triple H was supposed to be the victor. Yet, the year afterwards Triple H won it. Even after all that he had to put up with, he came out on top. Funny how a nobody like Steiner would talk smack about Triple H.
Just call it the Attitude Era. That time frame featured the best storylines and characters period. Up and down the card was entertaining. The worst of that era would be above average compared to what we got in the present day.
If any of the wrestlers today (WWe, TNA, ROH etc.) can do what DX, Austin, the Rock did in the 90's.... Hogan and Ric Flair during the 80's. MAKE A TREND!!! ESTABLISH SOMETHING not follow the trend and NOT worry about what the punishment will be! A lot of wrestlers ARE afraid of being hurt or humiliated today; not the guys in the forementioned!!!
I am n auston fan but honestly DX was just as big.
Face it lol the only reason people liked stone cold more is because he drank, he broke rules and he kicked the bosses ass all the time.
If it came down to it I would say HBK is better then all 3 of them when it comes to skill. But stone cold is the best when it comes to being a redneck who drinks and comon everyone loves that.
People loved Austin. The McMahon feud was legendary. Who didn't want to beat the shit out of their own boss and just overcome whatever bullshit they got? Thats what Stone Cold did. That was the hook to him, the "I don't give a rats ass who you are, we're doin this my way" attitude.
DX was heel, but DAMN was it fun to hate em. They were unpredictable, they always went to that next level you didn't think they would take it to. You booed em, but ya wanted to see what was next.
well that maybe true but lets take a step back from you comment of this will be known as the austin era......... fact". dx was the best of all time no one person could top them at all. there material was better they had something new every week. what did austin do other than flip the bird flip the bird stun this guy and stun that guy then roll out. so yes it was known as the austin dx era. sorry bro.
It's a shame you own nothing.

And put some other wrestlers over while you're at it.
maxpower789z 2 years ago 11
only short: HBK was the attitude era before the attitude era was "officially" there...just as he was dx before dx was cool!

triple h is awesome

I know triple H gets a lot of sh** for marrying the boss's daughter but you gottat hand it to the guy as he certainley knew how to get ahead by association...as soon as he got to wwf he hooked straight up with Nash,Hall,Michaels and the rest as they say is history....

Triple H has no respect for the business. Vince should have fired him and HBK after the MSG incident.
cullindmc 2 years ago
Umm.. yeah right.
If the case, then HBK would never have lost the WWF championship to Steve Austin and kick started the Attitude era.
Henceforth whether you like it or not, HBK and HHH should never have been fired after the MSG incident.
And if you seriously sit there and class the MSG incident as bad for breaking kayfabe, then you sir and an absolute tool.
Fuck off, douchebag.
martinlamaletois 2 years ago
Haha, you know nothing!
The Attitude era had nothing to do with HBK losing the title to Austin. Vince should have sacked HBK and HHH and run the company with Bret and Stone Cold at the top.
Then maybe 'douchebags' (haha, still cant believe you ended your comment with that) like you would worship merchandising machines like John Cena.
cullindmc 2 years ago
It was a house show back in the day before everyone had youtube, how many people then saw what went on? If it happened now it would be dif cos everyone would see it the next day but not people saw what happened back then.
westie420uk 2 years ago
1:50 to 1:58, they were a close 2 behind austin when it came to selling merchandise?
They sold more than the Rock? I find that hard to believe.
balancer182 2 years ago
Triple H is just bitter that he could never be as big as Austin. Stone Cold could come back now, not even wrestle and pull more money than HHH.
How long before HHH and HBK start trying to destroy Randy Ortons career?
cullindmc 2 years ago
Huh what do you mean? HBK even jobbed to Lance Cade once. DX lost to Legacy, and has been putting them over.
It's only Randy Orton's fault if he can't get over with the fans.

Randy Orton sucks.
archona4 2 years ago
Randy Orton isn't getting over on the fans, are you serious??? He's only the most hated wrestler in the WWE now which means he's doing a perfect job at selling his role which is to be the most hated. Orton is a great wrestler and will continue to grow into one of the best wrestlers this industry has seen.

He sucks. He can't wrrestle. He can't cut a decent promo.
My opinion. Which, by the way, can be different than yours. I think your opinion is way off. Grow into one of the best? Are you nuts? Apparently so.

DX did a lot of skits and college humour, and thus seemed more colorful.
balancer182 2 years ago 5
If you didn't know that wrestling was fake in the 90's then you my friend, were/are a HUGE mark!
mastervoz 2 years ago
Fact: DX was the answer 2the nWo
nWo was way better at the time, but at the end DX did win the popularity battle. not cause they were better, but because the nWo had nothin else after they basically "took over" WCW and most of the wrestlers. I mean DX played it smart in only havin a couple members, nWo just grew "2big"
apc0000 2 years ago 4
New World Order were just... nowhere near as awesome as DX. They had amazing members in it obviously, but like this says, DX was cutting edge. nWo just wasn't.
I miss Chyna from DX :( I hope they get another woman member soon :P

IT WASN'T IN THE SCRIPT.
romanceescondio 2 years ago
They were all supposed to be punished for ruining the original script, but since Nash and Hall left for WCW and HBK was the WWF Champ, he couldn't get punished since he was main eventing, leaving Triple H to take the full heat. The punishment prolonged his rise to the top but eventually as you may know, it made little difference!
romanceescondio 2 years ago
No, it was Micheals and Hall vs. HHH and Nash.
ctothecman 2 years ago
It was Michaels v Nash and HHH v Hall
If you mean at MSG, btw.

from 1997-2001, wrestling was the biggest thing on the planet. they could have built on that, but they failed miserably
theogofextreme 2 years ago 8
Can you explain what you mean by "fail miserably?" I just want to be sure I know what you are talking about.
romanceescondio 2 years ago
sure. vince specifically had it all. he made major mistakes. there were times since 2001 where WWE had some incredible moments. shawn michaels returning, the return of hulk hogan to the red and yellow, things like that. even the 2006 DX reunion, but these moments were not given proper chances to develop, with the exception of HBK's return.
theogofextreme 2 years ago
I agree. When NWO returned I thought it was going to be a huge group, not just three superstars even though they were icons. The same goes for DX, I thought that at least they would feature Road Dogg, and X-pac but no, it was just two of them. I agree most memorable moments were not lived for long.
romanceescondio 2 years ago
the attitude is the austin era,the attitude era officially begun when austin was given the title,he was the number 1 draw and the number 1 seller but their is no doubting that dx was special and highly entertaining and compulsive viewing.

i luved the dx era. best times in rasslin
xXxGATExXx 2 years ago 7
Look, the HHH/Shawn DX was special. The DX afterwards (minus the Nation skit) was not great. In fact, I wasn't much of a fan. Rock, Foley, Austin, Taker.......these were the guys that really shined in the early stages of the Attitude era (1997-1999). HHH got better later. As for the "MSG Incident", they deserved to be punished, for you just don't break kayfabe like that. Plus, there was no point to it except to those four, and that was very selfish.
patg316 2 years ago
if you really think about it who has HHH had a good, memorable match with someone that isn't a big name superstar. He is just a product of his environment. I hate to say it but Scott Steiner was right about the fact that HHH got to where he is because of the Kliq and Stephanie.
LiLpLaYaS69 2 years ago
I don't think Steiner was right at all! Did you even see how the MSG incident turned out? Triple H got punished for what Nash, Hall, and Michaels and he pulled off. At the King of the Ring Austin won, Triple H was supposed to be the victor. Yet, the year afterwards Triple H won it. Even after all that he had to put up with, he came out on top. Funny how a nobody like Steiner would talk smack about Triple H.

all i have to say
attitude era rockss
wrestling sucks balls now
YVsoccer1 2 years ago 6
Just call it the Attitude Era. That time frame featured the best storylines and characters period. Up and down the card was entertaining. The worst of that era would be above average compared to what we got in the present day.
manofpeace20 2 years ago
If any of the wrestlers today (WWe, TNA, ROH etc.) can do what DX, Austin, the Rock did in the 90's.... Hogan and Ric Flair during the 80's. MAKE A TREND!!! ESTABLISH SOMETHING not follow the trend and NOT worry about what the punishment will be! A lot of wrestlers ARE afraid of being hurt or humiliated today; not the guys in the forementioned!!!
pats14fann01 2 years ago 2
I am n auston fan but honestly DX was just as big.
Face it lol the only reason people liked stone cold more is because he drank, he broke rules and he kicked the bosses ass all the time.
If it came down to it I would say HBK is better then all 3 of them when it comes to skill. But stone cold is the best when it comes to being a redneck who drinks and comon everyone loves that.
Comonguysdontbemad 2 years ago
People loved Austin. The McMahon feud was legendary. Who didn't want to beat the shit out of their own boss and just overcome whatever bullshit they got? Thats what Stone Cold did. That was the hook to him, the "I don't give a rats ass who you are, we're doin this my way" attitude.
DX was heel, but DAMN was it fun to hate em. They were unpredictable, they always went to that next level you didn't think they would take it to. You booed em, but ya wanted to see what was next.
