@FoodOddities me too skin that fruit while wearing thick gloves, it small needles on that fruit feels like fine slivers in the skin, I almost went crazy trying to get the needles out of my skin by rubbing it against sandpaper and what not! Tamarind is better when made into a drink, not eaten directly. As you experienced, the flavor is overwhelming when eaten directly. Dissolve tamarind in water and add sugar.Tamarind dissolves better in warm or hot water. The amount of water and sugar you add depends on personal taste. It's a very refreshing drink. It should be drank cold, although you can drink it hot if you like.I don't know anyone who likes it hot though.
By the way, there's sweet tamarind and sour tamarind.(sour is best)
@7k7p1mnm we make soup made of tamarind and YES it is delicious. :D ALSO, there are sugar and salt coated tamarind that's considered as treats here in Philippines and YES! They're ALSO delicious! :D
Two ideas from Bolivia in South America. Salteñas and Chuños.
Salteñas are just absolutely incredibly delicious and are eaten almost every day, no matter who you are. Chuños are small potatoes that have been frozen and thawed many times before being squashed underfoot, peeled and dried rock hard. They're great in soups!
@FoodOddities Essentially, they are naturally freeze-dried. They are left out overnight where they freeze, and as they do the moisture in them crystallizes. When the hot morning sun hits them, the crystals sublimate (evaporate without thawing). They let this happen for a number of days until they are completely dried out. To speed things up, and to remove the skins, the farmers usually roll and squash them with their bare feet! They have a wild sort of earthy flavor, almost mushroomy!
@FoodOddities Because Ohio State got in trouble with the NCAA because this tattoo parlor was giving the football players free tattoos and paying them for "jobs" they were hired to do but they never actually did any work hahaha
You should try Bird's Nest Soup. It's another one of those expensive delicacies. I hear it tastes like something that Big Bird may have swished around in his mouth before spitting it into your bowl!
Hey Remy, getting back at the stinky stuff, you should try Surströmming (fermented Baltic herring). According to a Japanese study the smell of a newly opened can of this is the most putrid smell of food in the world. Since it's Swedish, you'll have to import it or have someone send it to you. Happy meals!
@FoodOddities I live in mexico, they sell them here, if you give me an adress where I cand send you some, I'll do it ok? you cand send me a private message if you want ;)
You're one of the most awesome kids on the planet. Surprisingly guanabana juice and durian candy are much more common than scorpian lollipops where I live. I love durian aswell and guanabana (also known as soursop) juice is so refreshing. Guanabana is also related to sugar apple and the cherimoya. If you get the change try kiwano horned melon it is a very strange fruit. I've only had it once and it was amazing. It would be cool to see you eat it on food oddities and see what you think of it. Yo
@stephaniebarney lol! that is awesome! i wonder if i should take some to school. thank you again so much:D i forgot that on nate berkus show we never even actually ate the candy because he woudnt do it. so this was my intro duction to it!!
@FoodOddities I'm not really sure cuz it depends on the individual like to me just smelling the aroma gets me slightly intoxicated. It's an acquired taste like I hate how it smells and even tastes but I still eat it once in a while cuz it's texture gets addicting to chew.
I've eaten durian and I likes it. I didn't think the smell was very bad. I've ate prickly pear and tamarind but I haven't had a scorpion pop. What did the scorpion taste like when you ate it? Awesome video Remy
I love tamarind candy! I get it at the Indian grocery store here in Charleston...it has a bit of chili in it and it's delicious. Jarritos tamarind soda is good too :)
@FoodOddities They do. Jarritos is a Mexican soda company. They make tamarind, mango, guava, hibiscus, strawberry, pineapple and something called tutti frutti that tastes like hawaiian punch. Piggly Wiggly and Winn Dixie carry them down here, and if there are Mexicans in Lansing the local Mexican market would have them.
@janellek21 you know what?my cousins just moved from charleston and my grandma used to live there as a young girl and my grandma and grandpa got married there!!
That's better, I can actually hear you over the music this time...
Those all look pretty good, I have to say. I'm guessing the rest of that bag of prickly pear popcorn didn't last long... I tried fresh soursop when I was in Kenya - I wasn't overly impressed with it I have to say, but I would imagine the juice would be quite refreshing. Hadn't heard of it being used to cure cancer before though.
The durian candy reminds me of some leece nut gummies I got at the mall a while back in the asian food store. They smell like old lady mixed with garbage, but they taste amazing.
My friend Stephanie brought me some tamarind from her family visit in Mexico years ago- it is very sour, but is good! The popcorn does sound really good!
@FoodOddities LOL! Disgusting food is kind of the crowd pleaser!
:P
But I do like when you mix in stuff like this! Most people would never try any of the disgusting stuff you try, but vids like this might get a lot of people to try something new that they'd never have thought of trying!
@harmgb1 o! lol! well we shot that last shot 5 times and i coud never bit through it!!first i tried with my front teeth that is a big mistake it hurt! then my side teeth then 3 times in the back it was too hard!! but i still have it. maybe if i freeze it i can cruch through it
@ulawan5 it really smells like raw onions that were left in the trash and you went on vacation and came back and the whole house smells like rotten onions:)
Good job Remy ! Have you ever eaten friend Fat Back ? It is a southern food, it is bacon that is not cured and you wash the salt off and slice it and fry it, it's one of my favorite foods in the world !
