  • If you try inhaling the "hydrogen gas" you will first feel extreme pain for 2 seconds then die. I dont think just plain hydrogen gas will do that.

  • Isn't it Hydrogen Gas that is produced, and not Chlorine Gas? I see Zinc Chloride in the equation, but isn't that a liquid?

  • can you collect the copper from the solution to use to plate something?

  • @8DuncanConstruction8 In this experiment I dissolved the zinc and not the copper.

  • Why did you just retrieve the penny with your bare fingers. No type of protection.

You said "Hydrocloric Acid is dangerous and can burn your skin".

    Epic Fail.

  • >:D VS. XD.... WHO WILL WIN?! Fav if you think XD will win!

  • I IST A MONSTER >:D

  • Whoops.... :P

  • Sorry but I WILL try it at home seriously! XD its part of my science project! It seemed really cool! Me ---> >:3

  • 2:30 won't that burn your skin???!!!!!

  • gay pennines =p

  • i just ate a mint. my breath is minty fresh

  • thanks for helping me do one of my chem labs over the break!

  • Hydrochloric acid isn`t ``similar`` to stomach acid. Stomach acid has hydrochloric acid in it but it has other fluids so it is not concentrated as much.

  • can u still use it?

  • Did this in science class...

  • can it melt away plastic if it was in a water gun i wanna try

  • lol "deadly Gas" .... its just Hydrogen gas... which yes can kill but you make it sound so dangerous to do... and the amount of gas it produces... wont be enough :P

  • that is pretty sweet

  • I am superman. : )

  • Ummmmm... If that was hydrocloric acid.. Then how did you stick your finger in the shot glass without getting really bad acid burns?

  • go hollow ur balls like dat!!!

  • how the hell did you put your fingers in there?

  • giving me qoosebumps

  • wow u r right, that kid did copy u

  • Thanks fhjj22. Good man!

  • try and use this when you go to a super market, ive tried cutting quarters in half, a lady asked if she can accept it, haha freaking idiots.

  • its kinda funny because that's a felony to deface government property... but nobody cares

  • you're right.

    nobody cares

  • how did u stick ur finger in there? dont u get burnt real easy with HCl???

  • lol, HCL doesn't burn.

  • was it low concentrated or...

maybe i was thinkin of hydroflouric...LOL

  • after the experiment there's no HCl left ;-) it's all Zn2+ and 2Cl- and the hydrogen comes bubbling out :-)

  • i did that in school exept we just use the acid

  • "Muratic acid is dangerous It can burn your skin" Coming from the genius who isn't even wearing chemical gloves or a respirator for that matter due to muratic acid's high purity level. The fumes could easily kill you by burning your lungs and throat.

  • Seth. Rather than being sarcastic. What have you learned from this?

  • Nothing because I already know how to safely handle chemicals, especially Muratic acid.

  • Good for you Seth. Dont forget the coolestdude when you are a successful scientist or doctor.

  • plant more trees save the world.

  • You said it would burn your skin, and then you just reach your hand in and grab it...

  • if u let it sit on ur hand it will

  • Files only cut on the forestroke.

  • Jews only cut on the foreskin.

  • we did that in science class lol

  • dude what mol/L is the acid? cuz i used 15.8mol/L of HCl and the penny was gone in 3 mins

  • Yes. It goes to prove the dillution of the brand. I did this a few years earlier with a different brand and it was quicker. Brilliant deduction realfidel....

  • Ok lets crack out the Hydrometer...

  • Illegal...

  • Nope...its for educational reasons...

  • It's not illegal. Defacing or destroying money is only illegal if it's for fraudulent purposes.

  • A penny is not worth it's weight in copper. If the Federal Reserve keeps devaluing our currency with multi-trillion-dollar bailouts, a penny won't even be worth its weight in zinc. That's why Congress is trying to phase the penny out altogether.

  • LOL first learn some chemistry...

Any average joe can write down a simple UNBALANCED chemical equation.

The proper equation would be 2HCl+Zn--->H2+ZnCl2

notice the number 2 infront of the HCl.

Second of all Hydrochloric Acid does not make Chlorine gas when reaction with chemicals like zinc. It makes hydrogen gas and zinc chloride. The only wat to make HCl give off chlorine is reduce the oxidation state of the chlorine with a strong oxidizer like KMnO4.

Third chlorine not kill in 20 sec

    Third

  • Hollowing-out pennies? You got the job. I bet you are a real lady-killer at parties.

  • there is also a way to remove the copper coating and leave the zinc, but it uses a lot of toxic ccyanide compounds

  • "Most impressive". You are an obviously advanced student.

  • Ok, For all you simpletons.... The scientist that you saw picking the penny out of the shotglass has very callas skin. Also, the acid is somewhat nuetrallized after ( 4hours) combining with the zinc. I sure hope you students have rich parents. :}

  • i did this in class...except we left the pennys over the weekends and nothing was left lol

  • LOL!

  • very clever, loved the experiment. i understood that CU(copper)outer layer doesnt react with HCL (hydrochloric acid, so all the Zn (zinc) was, well, as you say eaten away.

  • isnt it ilegal to destroy money ,like a jail sentance? well over here it is.

  • he put that penny to better use in the effort to educate than its really even worth

  • tru

  • just wondering, what do u do for a living? does it deal with chemicals or is it a hobby?

ive always wanted to try this, but didnt know wut acid to use...

    nice vid

  • Actually. The sky is the limit. You can do what you want with your life. That is called Muriatic acid (hydrochloric acid). Good luck...

  • I also used viniger it just took a couple weeks...

  • hahahah nice

  • Did you stick your finger in acid? That doesn't seem like a very intelligent thing to do, your finger would have almost immediately begun to burn. I call foul.

  • That is really funny!

  • ok..first...why did you pour that chemical out without gloves on? lab safety 101 dude.

    Cool experiment though.

  • My hands are callus. I work with chemicals all the time as well as physical things....

  • why did you pick it out with your hand?!

  • yeah...after that, you dip your finger in that shit????

where the hell would you get that stuff...and what temp. do pennies melt?

  • As long as you wash your hands straight away, diluted acid (guessing 10% acid) wouldnt start to burn your hand as quickly as zinc

  • kick ass demonstration! the shell it was reduced to foil- thin as it is- its actually thinker than i would have imagined it to be, probably should start saving even the zinc pennies because ive heard the zinc is worth slightly more than the face value of the coin,, just wondering what the hcl would be after the zinc is dissolved?

  • Zinc Chloride. (Zinc Butter) Still a solution of the remaining Hydrochloric acid. It becomes a crystaline in pure form.

  • pulled the penny out of the shot glass with your fingers? hmmmm.
