why do you have to put in the C#. can you use another note thats less difficult

if you want to, you can do without the C# and just play B, E, A. I used the C# because that's what I hear when I listen to the song

It is called a CAPO, and it is used to raise the pitch of the guitar two half steps... So the D fingering is actually an E on a tuner.
You can place the capo anywhere on the neck to play in different keys
