Fletch seems to have filled the same capacity back then as he does today! At least he is consistent! :D And for those who may bicker with me due to this comment, I've been a fan of DM since I was 12 - 1984 when People Are People hit the American airwaves, so don't bother . . . :P
Don't know why, mayby because the songtext not is written by any of the members, not 100% sure
.The song is better than some songs from Speak and Spell. But there was some other good songs they only played live. I think Addiction (AKA 'Ghost of modern time') is better than Televion set
VINCE CLARKE has arranged and produced the title track for Robert Marlow's forthcoming album 'Inside/Outside' and has also remixed one of the tracks, 'Home'. The album will feature ten tracks and two remixes. MARLOW has also announced a gig at Nottingham's Junktion 7 on November 14th where he will be supported by up and coming synth acts Electraset and One Moment. The show will also be the launch of the much anticipated 'Trans Continental Electronica' compilation tv set cover on cd
According to the 'Stripped' biography this song, or at least the main riff, was written by a friend of theirs not in the band which is why it was never officially released as a DM tune. Still a pretty happening song, though I agree with CurtisTuch in that it wouldn't have really fit in with the track listing for 'Speak & Spell'. However, I don't think anyone would have minded if it replaced 'What's Your Name'. LOL!
It has become commonplace to bash "WYN." Sad, because the musical arrangements are quite impressive, if one listens to them carefully. If the song had used the words "pretty girl" instead of "pretty boy," perhaps it would not have been bashed by everyone, including the band. It would have remained a cute, catchy early Beatles-like tune of the synth-pop era.
In my opinion placing "TV Set" on S&S would be like putting "Shout!" on S&S...it would have stuck out as the odd song on the LP. Would've worked as a B-side though as "Shout!" did for "New Life." It would be like half of the songs on "A Broken Frame." Great tunes, just no theme, kinda sounds hodge-podgie...as if there were no other songs available for options.
I think it would have fit quite well, actually. Why, is "Big Muff" meshing well with "No Disco" and "Any Moment Now"? This has a very "JCGE" edge to it, and it certainly would have made a better addition to S&S than the aforementioned "No Disco." Still, if the piece was not theirs, it does not belong.
This is so brilliant ! Thx and FULL respect to Koffe74 for posting this !! DM are (yet) so 'innocent' on this clip. This is 'genious' and music at their best. If anyone ever looked for a definition of such terms, a link to this clip could be "copy-pasted". Best regrads to all DM fans across the globe - this group gives me so much of self-respect, they are truly unique (and best !!), but then all fans know that...:o))
There are a few songs from Vince Clarke, that should have been on Speak & Spell, but they chose not to use them, because most were cover songs, and they wanted to use there own original material. But, Vince's music was more alternative sounding, than the popy music style they chose on Speak & Spell. I think Speak & Spell would have been more popular with Vince's music ideas from TV Set, Reason Man, Price of Love etc... All the songs are out there, I have them all.
Thank you for posting this. I am a Depeche Mode fan for more than 20 years and I HAVE NEVER EVER HEARD this before. Thank you very much. Keep posting stuff like this.
Thank you very much for posting this video!!! :) They're my all time favourite group, and this in so amazing to watch. I heard this song in the late 80s on a cassette I ordered from some guy, and I still think the song is so great!! Just like the other songs they made during the early 80s!
this song is quite good- this could easily havebeen on speak and spell it's certainly better than some of the songs that do appear on that album. thanks for the upload this is super rare, but you know that already! ;)
This is so rare, rudimentary, and amazing it's mind boggling. Dave even turns on the reel on this one! I would have enjoyed "TV Set" on Speak and Spell.
why do they do this to me??? I want this song on my Zune!!! T.T not fair!!! I guess I will have to just use youtube for now!

it wasnt included on Speak n Spell because one of the keyboard riffs has the same pattern as Just Cant Get Enough's main riff.
RabbitPunching 11 months ago
I thought Vince Clarke wrote this. I thought it was excluded because it wasnt up to standard for Speak and Spell
40of50 1 year ago
@40of50 Certainly better than No Disco and What's Your Name.

Dave the Revox player -- mmmm.
I always wonder why the tape machine stood in the centre of stage. Why not behind Vince for example.
MargusKiistheCritic 3 years ago 2
I think they wanted the tape machine to be seen...like "We´re not hiding anything, we don´t have a drummer but still can make interesting music"...
looks odd though

Vince didn't wrote this song. It's a cover from another local band in those days. Just as you know:)
