  • Joe Lewis was a great fighter. One person that most definitely beat Bruce. He turn down Bruce's offer in a movie role in return of the dragon due to HIM not accepting such defeat from a mediocre opponent ''BRUCE''.

That's the whole debate now with Chuck and Bruce, due to the filming where Chuck losses to Bruce. Bruce knew by doing such chirography on his on screen movies , the gullible Americans would accept such lost. Chuck paid the price, but gain movie stardom in Hollywood.Chuck would win

  • @martinez418 wtf ....its obvious chuck lose to bruce ...chuck norris is not such an expert ...he isn't faster and stronger than bruce ...if he knows how to do a roundhouse kick doesn't make him better than bruce lee ..van damme fights better than chuck norris ...but not better than bruce ...

  • it's funny how these guys sing a different tune since Bruce died. I remember reading Joe Lewis saying he could not avoid Bruce's low sidekick to the knee. And that

    Bruce taught him fighting strategy.

  • Thx

  • wow he would go back to his wrestling roots still!! jus shows why wrestling is dominating in the ufc thats crazy!!!

  • joes awsome teacher and sure they all new bruce was awsome and cuting edge on top of eveyrthing .it was the time .just like elvis and the beatals for what they did i realy like joe and his defence and countering

  • 1.) there is something inside of joe lewis who wants to find out how good bruce lee really was. he never showed lewis how good he really was. it was all about a teacher studend relationship. the only one who saw bruce lee in a real fight was bob wall and hes the only one from these so called world champions who said that bruce lee was the best of all time. i think joe lewis wants to find out but hell never get an answer and that is hard 4 him to accept to let his ego survive.

  • @Brucelee4eva

Lewis didn't need to find out how good Lee really was. Lewis did not even need Lee anyway. It was Lee, who needed Lewis to be able to claim he was the teacher of the top karate fighters in the US. Lee was just scared of losing his face. That's why he never fought in tournaments, not even once. By the way, why don't you find out how good Joe Lewis really is yourself? Are you scared of finding an answer because it would most likely destroy your stupid ego?

  • @legkicker01

Joe Lewis does refer to Bruce as his teacher, read article Joe wrote for KARATE INTERNATIONAL were he states this, don't be an igorant Joe fanboy who doesn't know anything about him but just want to lick his ass.

There is also an article from the Washington Star which states that Bruce handles and instructs Chuck Norris, Mike Stone and Joe Lewis as a mother would to a child

    v=tsN0g3p9_-U

This article was published when they were all here.

  • its Lewis not Louis actually!

  • Joe Lewis was rated the greatest karate fighter of all times. He received his black belt in 7 months( in the service). Then studied under Bruce Lee and Sugar Ray Robinson. This guy is a beast!

  • thumbs up!!

  • Joe Lewis a legend!!!

  • LOOK UP GORDON DOVERSOLA. JOE MENTIONED HIS NAME WHEN HE FIRST CAME BACK TO THE MAINLAND. HE TRAINED IN OUR SYSTEM OKINAWA-TE BEFORE HE EVER MET BRUCE LEE. JIM KELLY HAS A 2010 INTERVIEW ON THE TUBE IT'S VERY INTERESTING WHAT HE HAS TO SAY ABOUT MR. DOVERSOLA AND BRUCE LEE. FACTS I DID NOT KNOW AND MR. DOVERSOLA IS FATHER-IN-LAW.

  • The way he talks, combs his hair and the angles of his face reminds me of Elvis Presley. They both had that Southern accent going on.

  • He's absolutely right, more MMA champions are wrestlers than any other style.

  • He was on walker texas ranger in 2001 and he was still that fast.

  • Joe Lewis had a falling out with Bruce Lee because when Bruce asked him to be in Return Of The Dragon and play the evil american, who would be defeated by the little Dragon, Joe said, "I would never lose to him."

    Sal Caradonna, CLEAR COMBAT®

  • @clearcombat They were all friends. I don't think "play the evil american" thing was portrayed in the movie. Bruce Lee gave that role to Chuck Norris and jump start his career.

  • @clearcombat Joe Lewis had a falling out with Bruce Lee because he accusedLee of Having an affair with his then girl friend or wife. That is the correct reason why they never spoke again.

  • i went to one of his seminars he is a great stragetist and a master of psycology.

  • i went to one of his seminars this guy is a master at stragedy and a great psycologist.

  • He said a wrestler would beat them all! I agree!

  • It's true, a "wrestler will beat them all." But think more BJJ rather than WWF.

Trust me: Joe Lewis knows, this man has been voted the greatest martial artist in history (twice).

When he says a wrestler will beat them all (think BJJ holds, bars, breaks, take-downs, etc- come on now folks, this is '91) he is correct. Watch UFC & see!

I learned a lot of fighting techniques but when push comes to shove, in a streetfight I am going to ground & pound EVERY time, sometimes breaking an arm first.

  • All the ufc champions are jujitsu experts. mir, machida, silva, penn, have all destroyed wrestlers. as far as wrestling on the street, I seen a dozen people get stomped and football kicked. wrestling is a sport.

  • @tonyvalente More wrestlers are MMA champs than any other style. Period.

  • I should have said that Lewis incorporated some of Lee's techniques in the latter portion of his point fighting career. A good example would be Joe Lewis' use of the forehand strike or back knuckle.

  • Robert: Joe Lewis was certainly influenced by Bruce Lee, but there continues to be major differences between JKD and Lewis' fighting system. Bruce Lee's trapping techniques and his adherence to the power side forward fighting stance didn't meet with approval from Joe when they trained together from 1968-1969. Joe did like Bruce's focus on bridging the gap and firing the hand or foot before snapping the elbow or knee. Lewis incorporated those techniques during his point fighting career.

  • Excellent. U are absolutely correct.

  • a lot of what i've seen in this vid looks like jkd, the feinting, half beats, kind of fencing with hand and feed but I wonder why he doesn't like giving credit to Bruce

  • Possibly because these techniques partially came from Western style boxing. Remember that Bruce Lee was very impressed with Muhammad Ali's boxing style (which he learned from Cuban boxers).

  • @mazilin2

Joe Lewis has ALWAYS given proper credit to Bruce Lee.

  • @mazilin2

GORDON DOVERSOLA MADE JOE LEWIS A CHAMPION. THE STYLE OKINAWA-TE THERE IS A PICTURE OF JOE WEARING OUR PATCH BEING CONGRADULATED BY BRUCE LEE AT THE 1964 LONG BEACH INTERNATIONALS. THAT IS WHY BOB WALL AND JIM KELLY TRAINED IN OUR SYSTEM. JIM KELLY HAS A 2010 INTERVIEW LOOK IT UP. IT'S INTERESTING WHAT HE HAS TO SAY ABOUT GORDON DOVERSOLA AND BRUCE LEE. MR. DOVERSOLA IS MY FATHER-IN-LAW AND DID KNOW THIS FACT!

  • @mazilin2

He gives a lot of credit to Bruce Lee on his DVD's. In fact, he has one called what Bruce Lee taught me

  • @mazilin2 joe lewis was killer, don't know if he really learned from Bruce Lee.

  • @blugularis

He did. I actually have pictures of him training with Bruce Lee.

It's in Lee's book: Art of Expressing the Human Body.

  • Bruce Lee was his last master (Sifu), his karate is influenced by JKD.

  • ....He just said that Tai Chi was his last style...

  • what style of karate is this?

  • The All-American full-contact kickboxing. He is the one who actually created it.

  • @legkicker01

No, Bruce Lee introduced kickboxing concepts to America in the early 1970s.

    v=rvWgQPeyhrU

  • i think shorin ryu

  • joe is world class plus.what a great champion.

  • IF he had to choose, hed go back be a westler. if he was he'd beat them all with the skills hes got now

  • notice he said wrestler could beat them all...joe is a great great striker AND grappler.this was BEFORE the gracies got big in the usa...

  • If you ever have the opportunity to train with Mr. Lewis do not pass it up. No one breaks down and explains the fight game like him. If we had more teachers in our education system like Mr.Lewis , kids would want to go to school on Saturday!

  • aww, they spelled his name wrong!

  • Yup, we did.

  • Geez I'm amazed by figuring out that Joe was a Wrestler before a Karate master.

I even thought he'd be very traditional and say Karate is the best but instead he acknowledges Wrestling as better for fighting.

And I agree that wrestling has it's advantages in a one on one combat, there are many MMA fighters who'd agree.

It's also great to hear the mentality of his training seminars and how much experience he gained through different masters.

Joe Lewis is certainly in my book a great MA Master.

  • You're right. As early as 1984, in one of the magazine interviews, he already mentioned 80 percent of real fights would end up on the ground. Him and Chuck Norris, Bill Wallace, and Benny Urquidez and Don Wilson were active grapplers before making career in striking sports.

  • Yeah I know Bill, Don and Chuck had some experience with wreslting and all, didn't know Benny was also a wrestler.

Thanks for the info and greetz from the Netherlands.

  • Urquidez has an extensive background in judo, jujutsu, and aikido. He's also been a life long training partner of Gene LeBell. Oh! speaking of the Netherlands, many of the pioneer MA champions, such as Jon Blumin, Chris Dolman, Dick Frij in your country were also striker/grappler long before the UFC.

  • Most martial arts have grappling hidden in the upper levels of the systems. While grappling has received a lot of attention in the past two decades, you can ask many of the older instructors (who know grappling) how many students they would have if they introduced it in the first few years. Not many.

  • Oldschool names there.

Dick Vrij had some experience with grappling from Dolman and some other wrestlers in the Rings orginization.

But Johannes really an underated guy and was truly at the level where Geesink was with his submissions.

BTW sorry for not responding sooner but're you repyling by using the replay button on your name?

Because I didn't even know you said anything untill I rewatched this.

And yeah, MAT user's right, back then submissions and wrestling was underated.

  • He's a true renaissance man, a man as relevant today as he was a few decades ago.

  • I would like to see him fight in Full Contact Karate that Kyoksuhin fight in

  • He has fought full contact. He was a kickboxer, and a legendary one. Check out his fights. He is in his 60's now, but could probably still hold his own. He has nothing to prove, because he already has proven himself.

  • if a wrestler would beat em all then quit doing karate/gungfu joey.

  • le plus grand du full contact avc bill wallace,je cherche ses 2 films non de code jaguar et force 5 si quelq un peux m aider merci!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Great Stuff!

  • 5 stars!

  • I love this guy. I haven't had the pleasure to meet him yet, but would like too. I love the way he thinks. He's a legend.

  • If you think he's deep here talk to him today. Training with him is one thing, have lunch with him and you'd be amazed at the philosophy he teaches. And, he's my neighbor.

  • Are you an instructor?

  • Joe Lewis teaches the nitty gritty detales of the science of fighting. I have seen him fight and he is the real deal.

  • Joe and Ed Parker were great friends, Parker showed Lewis some kenpo and sometimes you will see the influence in his system. Joe has several students that are high ranking under him, that also trained under Parker.

  • Nice vid. Didn't he also train kenpo with Grandmaster Ed Parker?

  • super

everything Joe Lewis is doing and saying is about real martial arts

  • There's much more to come!

  • these videos you are posting are awesome. 5 stars.
