@KCbeernerd Thanks for the constructive criticism. :) This is not my favorite episode. I hope you will check out some of our other episodes or our Top 10 Beers of 2011 video. We have come along way since we recorded this video.
I agree with some of this, but I think its really a beer that you have to drink a few times to really appreciate. Its very powerful upfront, but the beer is very rewarding after about 30 minutes. I think the score is too low. Id give it a 9 within its prescribed context. Obviously not a every day beer but on the right ocassion its a real beast.
Well like most craft beers as they warm up...more flavors become present... that's prolly why in Europe they drink brews at room temp. But I love Palo santos and I think u guys should definitely revisit this one...
Explain why "Joby" is on here? He obviously has no idea what is going on and should have never been invited on the panel. He would rate Coors Light higher than this epic beer. Please, I can't stand him on here and I can watch no more.
@funface2 None of us had any beer experience when we started the show. It's more about how average guys see beer. However, our tastes have been evolving as we've tried some higher end beers and some of the stuff that we didn't like at first has become more appealing as we've done more episodes. Hope you will tune into watch the evolution. Our upcoming Dale's Pale Ale episode is a really good one I think.
@AgileHProductions I sort of like what you guys are doing here, but it needs to be more nuanced. If you are the "better beer authority" than your reviews should reflect this in your reviews.
@funface2 I agree with you about the name. I picked the name before we shot our first episode because I liked the sound of it & the website was available. It might not be perfect, but I like to think of it as what we strive to become someday. You should watch our videos "2011 Beer Year in Review" & "How we Rate Beer" to learn more about us. Honestly, this was not one of my favorite episodes. I liked this beer way better than the other guys and I new we would get criticized for it.
@funface2 (cont.) However, this show is based on the honest assessments of our panelists. I encourage them to be honest about the beer even if it means that they aren't in agreement with the rest of the craft beer community. Sometimes that puts us in the crosshairs when our opinions don't line up with those of other beer geeks. Hopefully, people appreciate the honesty. I think it actually adds to the "suspense" of our show because you aren't always sure if the guys are going to like it.
@AgileHProductions I happen to love Palo Santo Marron. I heard the panelists talking about a black licorice taste. I don't happen to agree with this, because I've hated black licorice since childhood. I get more of the caramel notes in it myself. Your panelists were right in that you have to let it warm up a bit first. This beer is definitely not for 'Joe Sixpack' who's only goal is to slam down one after another at a ball game, but by those who like, say, a good sipping whiskey.
@maestr0123 We need to revisit this beer in another year or two. Thanks for watching. Check out our Dale's Pale Ale episode. It's one of my favorites. I really liked that beer.
Raison D'Etre seems to be widely available out west, not sure why Stumpy hasn't seen it (although 4 months ago). Raison pales in comparison to Palo Santo. Fresh batch great, 1 year of age, stunning. By far my favorite.
@ThaBigE I'm a big fan of D'Etre. I thought the Palo Santo was nice too. I would love to sit around and sip that one. I haven't had it since we did the show though.
anyone who buys bud.miller.coors would not buy this beer, and i f they did they wouldn't know what they were drinking. this is a very complex beer that is made with very different methods. Hats off to DFH once again!
Nice of Scott to roll out of bed and come straight to the beer review. No need to put a shirt on, Scott - LOL
I love how James rolls the r in "marron" like when Alex Trebek tries to say spanish words. LOL
I actually haven't had this beer yet but I knew you guys weren't going to warm up to it. I'm surprised you keep drinking DFH beers since most of the panel isn't DFH's target audience.
@ChadzBeerReviews This review was actually shot a while ago and I waited to post it because we had too many Dogfish Head beers in a row. Fun fact: This was our last episode shot with SD cameras.
I wouldn't say that our panel is not in DFH's target audience. We don't just gush on every beer. We have had several positive and several so-so reviews for DFH. We were positive about 60 Minute, 90 Minute, Sahtea. Negative about Punkin and Palo Santo. Raisin D'etre is one of my favorite beers.
@TheHammer609 I think that's too broad of a statement to be true. La Fin Du Monde got a good rating and that has 9% ABV. We've been doing a lot of top-shelf beers and we just don't jump on every bandwagon because beer geeks get all ga-ga about these beers. I don't pressure these guys to give good ratings so that we sound like other reviewers. I want them to be honest about what they think of their beer. 1st and foremost, is the beer good enough to inspire them to buy it again.
One of the best beers DFH makes in my opinion. This one really grew on me during my second bottle of it when I knew what to expect. Still not for most people though.
And I don't care what glass the brewery or some website recommends, you should have been drinking this beer in a tulip or snifter. There's a bunch of nuances with this beer. Check out my review on the Beer Geek Nation website.
@AgileHProductions I like Raison D'Etre, but the 90 minute is my favorite DFH beer. But I think that most DFH beer are great so rating them against each other is hard especially when the are so different from each other.
@StumpyJoeJr I agree. This is one of my DFH favorites. Lots of complexity in both the nose and the palate and the abv, while detectable, is masked quite well considering that it's 12%.
Haha, Joby's comment about it basically being "a piece of black licorice dunked in alcohol" makes me want to try it all the more. I'll have to see if I can pick up a bottle of this the next time I go get some craft beers.
@DocFunky Interesting beer. Definitely don't want to drink it too cold. It got much more interesting as it warmed up. The brewery recommends a pint glass, but I think a snifter seems more appropriate. I would be interested in exploring this one again.
@z0a0c7h I never would have pronounced it right if I hadn't taken Spanish class - I'm not even sure I'm right now, but I just wanted a chance to roll my "r"s!
Who the hell cares what Bud/Miller/Coors drinkers think about beer?

@StumpyJoeJr What do you think of Raison D'Etre? Have you had that one? It's one of my favs.
We usually try and sample the beer the way the brewery recommends. I do think a snifter would be better.
