Hi there. ... . Tory from Austin Texas. Singer songwriter musician. Check out my originals and subscribe if you like. Please listen to my own original of The Little Tramp..a tribute to Charlie Chaplin. Namaste.
It's interesting how timing and 'delivery' have the same importance in physical comedy as in verbal. The immediacy of Charlie's escape attempt once he realises the bully is impervious to blows is hilarious and the well-expressed element of desperation in his attempt to knock him out as he turns around. I love the little details like the facial expressions and the skewiff helmet to emphasise the idea of his bewilderment. Great stuff!
It's a real shame Eric Campbell, the best known Scot in silent films along with James Finlayson, was killed in a car crash in 1917. In Chaplin's words "a very gentle humble man" and someone who would have had a career in the talkies. He was also an opera singer and he first wore his trademark false eyebrows when playing the Mikado on stage.
@Cool2BCeltic - Itt's funny how some of the movies' villians turned out to be nice guys in real life. I'm thinking about Boris Karloff, Edward G. Robinson, and Oliver Hardy (who played comic villians in films before teaming with Stan Laurel).
Why no sound?

This is one of the funniest scenes in movie history. Too bad it doesn't have music though.
