I had a similar experience last fall here in the mountains in Colorado - I was meeting with a buddy of mine on my back porch & all morning the crows would not shut their beaks - had to be at least 20+ all over this tree. Finally we noticed this giant great horned owl sitting on one of the branches, looking all manner of annoyed. Eventually he flew off, but really who can blame him - those crows were obnoxious!
I believe great horneds steal crows' nests, which is why they flip out around one :)
Reminds me of a time when I saw a red-tailed hawk in a tree and it was getting the shit yelled out of it by a measly red squirrel in a branch right by it! Guess it took it since it lost the element of surprise. : /
If the crows had any idea what that owl could do to them, they wouldn't be so obnoxious. The great horned owl eats bigger things than that all the time.
I always hear great horned owls out in the desert. I see more barred owl than any other. Occasionally I'll see dead screech owls on the side of the road. If you want to see owls, check out the Louisiana coast, Cameron and surrounding area. I've seen great horns flying during the day, and screech owls at dusk. In the Texas hill county I once saw an elf owl. I'd love to see a Great Grey in Minnesota. Cheers. Thanks for the vid.
I just saw this happen a few minutes ago in my yard in GA. Probably 15 crows. My owl flew away...hopefully it'll come back tonight when crows are gone.
@mrstjs LOL. This is happening right now in my backyard! at first we kept hearing some crows...barking... chirping... in the backy ard around 12 p.m. and now its like more owls are comming and its getting so annoying! and then we finally found out around 7 p.m. that the owl is sitting in a tree! i so wanna take a pic...
No that's just the typical strategy of an owl when under threat. They try to hide by staying still and freezing. They also do it when humans approach, which makes people think they're tame, when they're not.
what i also thought about is crows are not birds of prey...but they are dangerous.
I could have to say for not being a predatory bird it is by far one of the bravest birds i have evr seen.
You also have the eagles and falcons who are birds of prey but super brave. I have seen those 2 birds attack things that a bird should not be messing with.
Sleeping in my basement in a residential area, I hear the hooo every darn morning from 6am till 10am. I cant sleep. At first I thought there was a neighbor close by playing that bird distraction device to keep birds away.
He's so regal, so beautiful. I love owls; what a magnificent bird.
The crows are funny, though. I like crows and I think they get a bad name because they're always harrassing bigger birds. THey are very adaptable birds and I think people should recognize their strengths.
Owl's like, you flying rat's are worse than sea' gulls. Im so high tech., the government want's to build jet's. Not gonna happen. Mother Nature rules.
They actually do this on a regular basis. Owls will frequently kill smaller birds including crows at night. So when they find a Great Horned during the day, they try and get it to go away.
This video reminds me of a few years back, some crows were messing with a hawk. I just happened to be running around in the woods with my pellet gun and ended taking a couple of the crows out of commission.
Good ol white boys hate dem some crows and coyotes. Blast em to smithereens. Good ol red men admired crows and coyotes for their superior intellect. The red men were perceptive. The rednecks are just beasts, lower than crows and coyotes. This good ol blue eyed Germanic American wouldn't even shoot the rednecks, let alone the crows or coyotes.
I've called in lots of horned owls, by voice, and a few screech owls. Had more than one horned owl swoop at me too. Sends a chill down the back.
Do NOT worry about the owls! Those guys are the absolute top of the food chain. The crows know that, and are doing 'mobbing' behavior to try to get the owls away. Too badh, people talking about killing crows . . .
I think the crows are trying to get him to communicate with them but the owl is like..... "um leave me alone what are you doing here I am trying to have some peace and quiet".
