For example, none of the best bass players in the world have the same techniques. Billy Sheehean IS playing bass. In his own way. I asked him about Geddy Lee and he was so respectful. Class act...
christ, that was awesome, but throughout i was thinking 'is he better than cliff? i'm not sure cos thats kind of blasphemy, but reading the comments did bring up that tune point, cliff wrote anaesthesia, a tune all the way through, rather than pausing every minute. cliff maybe is a bit slower but.........AHHHHHH i don't know, cliff is still the king for me, but billy is very close

@thisiskris017 Hahaha no. Electric bass is based off of the double bass, which comes from a completely different family of instrument than guitar, and originated during the Renaissance. And while some bass players do use picks now, basses are meant to be played with a bow or fingers. Basically, a guitarist CAN pick up a bass and play it like a guitar, thinking it is merely simplified, but historically speaking, you're doing it completely wrong.
In no way am i discrediting how impressive this video is, trying to keep up on the bass is damn near impossible, and ive been playing for a while now. But I don't consider this good bass playing at all. He has incredible speed and precision, yet this is a guitar part on the bass, only in a few instances does it feel like a bass part. Most guitarists that grab a bass immediately want to shred on it, I've seen it happen and they just do it to show off. If you can play this good for you but that doesn't mean you're talented. @PimpMyForzaSport Honestly, what amazed me is how fast he played with his fingers. Nowadays bass players are "guitarists" who join a band with 2 guitarists in them already, although some people actually like bass, but most bass players use picks. His solo does use scales because you can hear all sorts of arpeggios and scales in there, but it might not be structured, because he is improvising. Just my opinion though.
I agree with you in one thing: you're not amazed with this video because you play guitar. get a bass, try to play this and you'll see why we glorify Billy.

Look, he is no doubt highly skilled in his speed, and perfection of hitting notes. But that's all you can really give him credit for in this solo. He has no melody or tune to this. Im not saying he isnt good, he is better than i will ever be, but this solo is over rated major time. Other bassists i have seen can play nearly as fast, but have a tune to go with it.

And another top bassist in CA, an old friend...us to play for MILES DAVIS till he passed. then he got this gig playing with this dude that played WOODSTOCK '69..Carlos Santana. >>the guy is Benny Rietvelt. (San Diego, CA) I don't know if he's even playing with Carlos still.
I met him at a JVC Jazz Festival in NY when he played with MILES. Got to meet the Great MILES too. It was Very Cool.

@Aveation For the distortion? He isn't, it's his signature Ampeg pre-amp OR his Pearce BC-1 pre-amp, either way both very hard to find these days! Though rumour has it he has designed a pedal for EBS which might get released :D

@PimpMyForzaSport Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I respect that. What makes this a great solo, in my opinion, is that it is being played on bass. Most guitarists that grab a bass immediately want to shred on it, I've seen it happen and they just do it to show off. If you can play this good for you but that doesn't mean you're talented. Structure or no structure scales or no scales just let us enjoy this BASS solo alright?

Sorry, its maybe because im a Guitarist, but i find this song or "solo" anything amazing. It has zero structure, all he is doing is playing fast and sorry to offend anyone but I can do just as good. He uses no scales, it doesn't flow what so ever. It seems like its all over the place, and just because a solo is played fast means absolutely nothing. My opinion, please justify your reason as to what makes this Solo so good. No hate please =) just my opinion!

@PimpMyForzaSport Honestly, what amazed me is how fast he played with his fingers. Nowadays bass players are "guitarists" who join a band with 2 guitarists in them already, although some people actually like bass, but most bass players use picks. His solo does use scales because you can hear all sorts of arpeggios and scales in there, but it might not be structured, because he is improvising. Just my opinion though.
