  • Great lesson.

  • Very informative. Many thx!

PS : H8ers : Put down ''Guitar Hero'' and pick up a REAL guitar already...

  • it takes a couple of watches till you get it , thanks I see, name the fingers with the numbers, find the number of the note of the next key you want to play, find the finger template number/pentatonic position number and you've got it, thanks!

  • Does this work for the Major pentatonic also because i tried it and it dont sound right

  • Did a light just go on? Can i use this to play different scales over chords in a song? In a 12 bar blues, if I understand this, would be 4 bars of A scale (#1) 2 bars of D(#2) 2 bars of A(#1) 1 bar of E(#3) 1 bar of A(#1) 1 bar of D(#2) 1 bar of E(#3). Then I can move these around the neck as in the first lesson.

If this is so, this may be the best lesson on youtube. I gotta go practice.

One other question, does this work with the major pentatonic scales too?

  • Awesome video man!

  • nice lesson, very helpful ty.

  • He looks like the guitarist of the Journey

  • I would give it 5 stars... but there are no more stars :(

  • Amazing lesson, except this I don't know what finger you use in massive moments!

  • yeahhh, i have lots of questions ^ ^, because i am a very beginner.

Just downloaded "Guitar for Dummies" - exactly my level ^ ^

    Thanks for the lesson!

  • Joe,

Great lesson! Insightful way to organize the patterns, clear explanation and application.

  • I think this video is ver good. I give it 5 stars

PLEASE go to my favs and click on ARIEL SIMANTOV (he is an awesome shredding boy without knowledge of notes) the other videos SUBURBAN GUY ROCKIN OUT is total improvisation as he goes along (amazing) and ARIEL (awesome shredding) pls view comment and rate them as we think he deserves recognition .thanks everyone!

  • I've played guitar for 10 years and I didn't understand any of that. I just play what sounds good to my ears, not to a bunch of notes in a box.

  • thats great :D pretty helpful.

  • This is actually a really helpful video, I never thought to play all the pentatonic patterns in 1 position. Would it work for other scales I wonder?

  • the first scale is a minor scale! I know that one! haha

  • looks like the guy from superbad, just older

  • he looks a bit like mahony...^^

  • @DamageManu Exectly , mahoney:D:D

  • @DamageManu Kinda like Spoonyone and Mahony's gay lovechild xD

  • @Emil315 thats true!

  • its a simple solution learn the shaps!

  • Gangstareel02 post a video of you playing some things and prove that you are better than people playing for 5 to seven years. Ive been playing for 10 years and would like to see you prove that you are as good as advanced players.

  • gangstareel your obviously a liar who thinks he is better than he is if you been playing for 7 months i can garantee you now...YOU SUCK

  • well not necessarily....i went to guitar school for 3 months (after playing for 9 months) so after 1 year I was already pretty advanced. although, based on gangstareel acting like a jackass, he probably does suck...lol

but yeah, some people learn music fast, some average, some slow, so going by how long someone has played doesnt always work.

  • Going by how long someone has been playing is the biggest amount of bullshit I've ever heard..

What if someone played 1 hour a day, and another guy 8 hours a day... for 1 year........ uncomparible

I been playing for a year + but I probably have the experience of someone who's been playing for 3 years to be honest, I've put so much time into it.

  • hes making it simple for begginers ....

  • Dude... You just don't know what real guitar is if you're saying this guy isn't a good guitarist. + If you've been playing for 7 months then you can't be that great. I bet this guy could kick your ass if he wants to (guitarwise). + What are you playing? Heavy Metal riffs? That isn't that hard, I could do that with one hand.

  • @PowerofJohras haha are you serious? even though I havent been playing guitar that long i've been playing music and composing music for almost 6 years. I have gotten recruit letters from Berklee, Julliard, and boston college of music. i think i know what music is you fucking hypocryte

  • I never said you didn't know what music is, did I?

  • This guy is so underrated.

  • Could I get tabs for this?

  • could someone tell me what size of pick should i use for me to able to shred flawlessly... THX

  • I use a .73mm it strikes the strings pretty well.

  • you are right-it is all in the pick. forget about practice and discipline if you have the right pick you can shred flawlessly!

  • shoould be able to use any pick, weather floppy or thick/stiff.

I personally like Ultex Jazz III's.

  • Nah, not really, some picks feel more comfortable to some players. If you're not comfortable, you won't be able to relax, and so you won't be as fast. Then again, if you're quite good, you're going to be able to play some things well with picks you don't like. More technically demanding stuff though, definitely not.

  • yes the pick that makes you practice more.

  • this helped me alot

  • I didnt understand this. Although dont take my opinion ive only been playing for 7 months. But hes a damn good player

  • I've been playing for one and I got this :P

  • Your full of shit.

  • Sweet sound.. played by a good guitar player, penatonic rocks. One question : Can this be linked to modal approach?

  • might be that i havent payed enough attention to the lesson but i dont get it :P

  • just started out and didnt get it at first cos i only know the first 2 shapes of minor pentatonic, but thats ace a really great way of working it out thanks

  • so far of all tutorials,, this one really makes sense,,,, its from the point of how we/ us wanting to improve but cant cope up with the experts,, this one did help,, hoping all other tutorials are like this.

  • Joe--How about moving back to Marin. Everyone here I talk to says they know you and that you are one great teacher. The guy at Magic Flute recommended your you tube lessons and they are like magic.

  • The two lessons Joe made are absolutely amazing. What a way to understand the fretboard. Thanks Joe.

  • this is cool..gonna try n learn!!!!

  • This is a fantastic video, have been looking for something like it for a while! highly recomendable.

  • How is it 1,4,5,3,2???

  • It's: 1 - 5 - 4 - 3 - 2

That's just the way the shapes are numbered.

  • this kicks ass, thanks

  • its a good lesson....im a beginner so its kinda hard to take it in all at once.... but with some practice hopefully I canget it down

  • I don't get the point...

  • The point is that if you know your notes on the bottom string and your pent scales you can pretty instantly jump into that key on any fret on the guitar at all by changing to one of the shapes.

Its a great trick. If your song changes key a lot you can flip around really easily. Heh, not that I've got it down or anything though.

  • its awesome when your playing blues or some rock

  • Is the pentatonic scales the only scales that have this trick? Does ever other scales have it's own similar trick?

  • Awesome! 5 *****

    gagi

  • I can't thank you enough. You have a great ability to show and explain things to people. I have played for 20+ years and am just now trying to learn this stuff, and you have helped a ton. Thanks.

  • awesome dude ! Thanks a bunch

  • Find Joe's website or search CD Baby for his new release, "Fear Itself". If you like his playing, you'll really enjoy the whole CD...

  • best lesson ever for me, thx a bunch!

  • he's talking about the basics of modes i think...

  • Very usefull! Thx

  • I see what your doin' but I still can't get it. Very informative though.

  • as soon as i think i have the pentonic scale mastered...

  • These lessons should be pay per view, i've been learning lead on and off for years and i've learnt more theory in one night than in 5 years!

  • Whats wrong with you retard?

  • What are you? A dick?

  • That was meant for SRVisthebest

  • No. But I have one. Unlike you.

  • Does anyone know the backing track in this video?

  • Find Joe's website or search CD Baby for his new release, "Fear Itself". If you like his playing, you'll really enjoy the whole CD...

  • that is some amazing tone and teaching

I have been playing a lot of speedy riffs, but this makes me want to just kick back and jam some slow melodic songs.

    thanks for the lesson

  • an absolutely excellent concept, and I'm definitely going to try it out, Mr. Cefalu.

    Thanks a bunch!

  • One of the best videos for this type of lesson, great job! Now I don't have to learn the scales the hard way, just learn those five shapes hehe. :D

  • Comment removed

  • and...

  • great video man

  • what songs were you playing over/where can i find them? they seemed like a good way to jam, and i'm really tired of crappy midi backing tracks

  • then write yourownshit if u don't lick midi tracks just get audacity and record the backing and play over the top

  • thank you... helped me and i hope to see more...

  • your high..XD

  • this guy is my real guitar teacher!

  • Mine too! Really!

  • @TeenRacer12 subscribed

  • Find Joe's website and check out his new CD "Fear Itself" - If you enjoy his playing, you'll really like the whole record.

  • thanks alot for this vid

  • What song was he playing?

  • Congratulations! In a sad attempt to make it sound like you know what you're talking about, you have revealed to everyone that you've completely missed the point!

    LMAO!

  • Thanks Joe, you rule. I echo the previous comment. You do teach well!Very helpful video here. Please keep it up.

  • Thank you, Joe! You teach well.

    Thanks again, Jed

  • sound cool man. CTROCK THE HIP HOP ROCK GUITAR ARTIST

  • lol what does he want to teach with this lesson??? i didnt understand the purppose :S

  • You are not ready for this lesson, Grasshopper.

  • lol, I agree.

  • you explane very nice and simple,5/5, myfave.

  • these pentatonic lessons really helped me get out of a rut in my learning lol

  • The reason the numbers are in that order was because that is the "Box" pattern that it corresponds to.

  • You moron..! that's because you didn't understand what he was sayin'! You weren't able to relate what he was saying... Too bad for you maybe you're not as good as a musician is meant to understand things like this... Tsk3x.

  • i agree with most here that these two lessons just gave me ideas to branch out with for awhile. I knew it was a must to converge the boxes together but I learned that speed is what impresses the ladies! Thanks for the post

  • This was complex? Blues scale? Why, because he bent a note up to the b5 every once or twice? It seems like pretty bare-bones Pentatonic playing to me. Simple enough to show the patterns and make the point. A fine job I'd say.

  • nice!!!!

  • im well confused

  • This one and the other video just gave me enough material for months/years. Joe, thanks for helping me to think 'out of the box'. U are one helluva teacher!

  • the 2 lessons of cefalu in Youtube are two greatest lessons i ever watch in any internet page , this two lessons are a gift ir shoulnt be free

  • Shred Academy is amazing, i didn't know shredding at all and ive watch 2 of their vids and already ive got an idea of what to do, and the teachers there are amazing! keep it up guys!

  • This is a great way of thinking, thanks

  • This is great! Although it seems more pracical to visualise the patterns to chord shapes. The five chord shapes in the first position of E7, D7, C7, A7, G7 shifted to the 5th position become A7, G7, E7, D7, C7 and relate to Joe's patterns 1,2,3,4,5. Using 7chords makes you aware of the minor third, which in blues is easy to bend up to the major third (for correct harmony).

  • I simply love this guy...

  • this guy is really cool. Great info, great presentation.

  • Joe doesn't personally answer these comments, and I doubt he even sees them. They are hosted by Shred Academy.

  • this is really awesome... you have my respect and gratitude Joe Cefalu :)

Could you perhaps tell me what gear you are using when playing the improvisations (guitar, Fx, amp/pre-amp, mics) ?

  • wow great job u really r a good teacher.

  • Thanks, Joe! This is a well explained lesson. I'll definitely come back for more after learning these two. I got everything memorized just need to pick speed.

  • Hey Joe where do i go to download those those

low notes templates you are talking about. Also i am wondering how you came up with the 1 ,5 4,3 ,2 template. how do you come up with the #5 ?

  • Thanks for the help Joe I need all the help I can get! And this lesson here is a winner! Great style, Great playing, Great teaching!

  • You absolutely have the most beautiful phrasing skills. ROCK ON!

  • is it the same w/ the major chord

  • huh?

  • what kind of guitar does he have?

  • Tom Anderson Strat

  • an electric one

  • hahahahahahah XD

  • ive been practicing those pentatonic scales for a long time and its kinda hard for me to find scales for every key til i wwatched dis video, thanks joe!

  • Your lessons are the best I have seen. Thanks for the help.

    God bless you

  • i dont get it

  • Thank you for this lesson. This is the sort of advice that I wish I was given YEARS AGO! hahah. Once again great! I have the scale diagram and I have been using it regularly. You say the 'hop scotch' method can be used with other scales.

    Here's my question...

Are there other important scale patterns I should learn?

  • GRRRREAT

  • You have an easier way to explain it?

  • Joe you are an awesome guitar teacher!! Thanks so much for all this GREAT INFO!! Very helpful!

  • thanks joe you made understanding soloing better easier. I play in a band with my brother and our lead guitarist wants me to learn to play lead so we can go back and forth during our songs. But i was having a hard time trying to memorize all keys and figure them out...you just made it so much simpler for me to understand...thanks

  • 1 more thing ...and i guess this is the most important..i guesss most of the good guitarists who can play lead guitar already have figured out what u have taught...but they keep those secrets very close to their hearts...thanx for sharing sir..thanx a lot...wish there were more vids...

  • man u r the best..u cleared my doubts about soloing which was troubling me 4 such a long time...now there's some light at the end of the tunnel

  • I'm clearing out the rest of my video lessons. This man is now my teacher!

  • TY TY TY

  • love your lessons.. very practical... not just another frickin sweep picking lesson

  • Thanks for the lesson Joe. I've played bass for XX years and recently went back to guitar. You broke it down in less than 10 minutes what I have been trying to figure out for a year. Thanks again.
