@dagosonfire I hear ya! I'm 43. So, I was 9 when this came out! This was part of my youth! I also played little league baseball and can definitely relate, to those times! I really feel sorry, for today's kids. Most of them, have only seen the garbage of a remake, of this film! I spoke to a 20 something kid just yesterday and he only knew the remake! UGGGHHH! I told him he had to see the original film! And yes! Everything is way too PC these days! Long live "The ORIGINAL", Tanner Boyle! :)

The "joke" is that rotten adults make rotten kids -- a small town's little league team championship seeming like D-Day to adults satirizes middle class white America. Tanner, practically an albino and full of bigotry, is a perfect example repeated throughout the movie . . . only "losers," including Matthau's Butterfield, have any chance of escaping the life of pointless consumerism and competition that is WASP America. The language mocks bad values not worships them and Tanner comes around.
