I don't condone a lot of certain actions that took place but tbh i can't help where i was born and locally im living a good life. The fact that im able to live such a good life here compared to other countries is easily a good enough reason to be patriotic.

Its about how great the country is, not about where we're from, if I was born in Iran, I'd prolly dislike it (I know many Persian people)..
I love this country, for it is my home..

@bugzNstuff yes but to a point, my parents on both sides came here legally and went through a process, the condoning of no borders is absurd, you can kiss goodbye any aspect of language, culture and ethnicity if you want to just allow no citizens.. without a set line in the woods of who belongs to what tax roll you have nothing... and that makes all the same..no identity of anything, just all the same language, the same food and the same same same same same, borders are what make us all healthy

It's obvious that the song is about immigrating specifically to america. But at the same time who says the song can't apply to other situations like timoc90 mentioned. That's the beauty of music. Although the artist may have a specific message the audience can adapt it however they may like and still enjoy the song to it's fullest value.
