  • John Prine ,what can you say,he makes you cry in one song and laugh your ass off in the next one, just like life. He's helped me thru the hard times and helped me celebrate the good times, thank you,my friend

  • Brilliant.

  • I find it ironic that so many people flagged the "I don't believe in god, I believe in Prine!" comment as spam. John Prine wrote about all of the things that no-one was supposed to talk about in "mixed company" (politics, religion, sex, drugs). If anyone knows anything about JP, it's that he is ALL about free speech. For people to spam judeyorke's comment because it doesn't conform to their religious beliefs is silly, imo. Remember: "Your flag decal won't get you into heaven anymore."

  • Heard him on the CBC and instantly liked his music. It's hard to find his music on Youtube or on iTunes.

  • @lotusflower281 there is tons of prine on youtube.

  • @dannooozy I mean this specific song though.

  • I don't believe in god, I believe in Prine!

  • I first saw him in 1996....didn't know much about him or his music, but I was blown the hell away by the time the first few words sang from his mouth. one of the best songwriters this country ever had.

  • i became a fan of his in the late 90s when i first saw him at the Britt festival

  • Cool !!!

  • The best of the best.

  • no other word but genius can describe John Prine he wrote about our lives made us laugh one minute and cry the next

  • The first time I heard this song it hit me like a ton of bricks. If you know about grave yard and old pawn shops you know the pain......This man is the best.

  • @floatingkonkey Complacent and stupid? Are those your middle names. This is one of the greatest singer songwriters of the 20 th and 21st century. Bad taste always presents as knowledgable, but can't back up BS with truth!

  • "I have graveyards and old pawnshops". Amen brother.

  • @ Floatingkonkey a.k.a floating terd. There's an old saying that everyone knows and one I'm sure your Mother taught ya. I know country folk have it in their DNA. "If ya can't say something nice, then say nothing at all". In your language, I just wanna tell ya to STFU ya floatin' terd.

  • @floatingkonkey everyone's entitled to an opinion. YOU HAVE YOURS – John Prine is not at his “prime” but as the song says “it took me years to get those souvenirs” - I have the original 1972 “Diamonds In The Rough album, (my own personal souvenir) your comments are based on the above video, (John has lost something from yesteryear) but by listening to the original, you may appreciate why you have received emotive comments. BTW if you play 4 a living why is your only video of a dog throwing up?

  • "I wrote this in about 20 minutes while stuck in traffic on I-285 outside Atlanta" ~ John Prine at a concert in the 1980's

Thanks for posting this, I love it.

This man should be declared a national treasure; OMG, he is the greatest ever!!!

  • Yeah...y'know?

  • Apparently 13 people are either deaf, dumb or both!

  • some people aint human, john's right.

  • John Prine has always had a distinctive, unique voice, but there was a noticeable change after he had a tumor removed from his neck, and he went through weeks of chemotherapy, which the doctor cautioned may effect his vocal chords. I saw him in concert in '09, and he was truly amazing. He had the audience cheering, laughing and crying (in a good way). John Prine has left an undenyable mark on folk music, and his genius exists in every song he writes.

  • @karmadhyana Not tryin do dis but John has left a rather large footprint on mankind not just folk music. PEACE!

  • @CactassDupree Word. (I should have left out the word "folk"!) His music does transcend genres... Peace back at you, my friend. :)

  • @karmadhyana just to be correct,he had 6 weeks of radiation,he didnt have to get chemo.he said he couldnt sing for six months and then he had to change the key to his songs that he had been doing for years, but,it made them seem new to him.

  • love all Prine, but "Please Don't Bury Me" is what we played at my brother's wake, he wanted that way.

  • John Prine rules. Got to meet him a couple of times in Memphis where he had some buddies that lived there. John's lived a hard life but his songs are as human as it gets.

  • what kind of Muppett votes to dislike this song?

  • i have this song tattood on me in memory of my father

  • I miss Steve and his great talent. His live performance was so good.

  • My favorite

  • this guy fuckin sucks

  • @floatingkonkey You fuckin suck...if u dont like it don't listen!!

  • actually i listen to a variety of music, studied music, play for a living, go to shows every night that i'm off, am very in tune with the greats, and this guy just represents the part of America that is complacent and stupid, so i was investigating more rather, so to you sir EPIC FAIL.

  • @floatingkonkey Music is like a woman...there are so many diferent aspects to appreciate. It is not only the physical beauty that attracts a man to them. It can be simply how damn nice they are to be with...it is also a matter of taste. Someone that I can't stand may be the next guys greatest thing. So it is with music. A large part is a matter of taste. I persoanaly would rather listen to this than a lot of the stuff that the music industry pushes on us simply because it fits an image.

  • @floatingkonkey Maybe the voice is not the greatest, but it is real! John is also older than he used to be. I don't know how many popular artists I have heard live that sound terrible. The only thing you have proven with your comment is that you are so close minded that you cannot accept other peoples likes and dislikes. Your musical experience, knowledge, etc. impresses me none after you call anyone complacent and stupid simply because you don't like this music.

  • @floatingkonkey I can't stand Justin Bieber but hey it's selling to someone so....I'm not gonna like it but anyone can listen to what they want...diferent strokes for diferent folks...don't pass me off as stupid because I don't agree with you.

  • well put

  • @floatingkonkey You arrogant little twit. First you come on this page and dis the song then you make a sissy ass excuse for what you said. So your a musically educated man huh? Sounds more like you have a degree in social studies. I studied music in college and exclusion of genre was not part of the curriculim. As well I am a performing musician and a session player. I've played everything from Americana to industrial goth and I get paid for doing it and enjoy doing it. You sir are an epic fail.

  • @Eatm308amA Ditto thanks for posting...

  • @floatingkonkey yeah keep listening to eminem and ditty asshole

  • Mr. Prine has a real different way of puttin' things. Love his tunes.

  • Started listening to John in the early 80s. A TRUE friend of mine put dusty old albums on a dusty old turntable, the sound was terrible, I never heard better! Over the years we drank beer sat around campfires and did our best to sing and play John's songs. I NEVER tired of listening to the same songs over and over. My friend has "cashed in" but I still listen to JP, sometimes getting a tear in my eye when no-one is watching.

    Mr7CRJ 1 hour ago

  • @Mr7CRJ fuckin aye man

  • Brilliant

  • Started listening to John Prine in Joliet IL around 1976. WXRT radio. And when I am fortunate enough to hear him played I'll always say "God Bless Him".

  • I saw him play fri nite in Kazoo MI..What a blast. He played for 3 hours. It was a the first time I had heard him play live. I have listened to his work since I was a teenager. The concert was a joy!!~!

  • When the radio announced the death of Steve Goodman, they followed it with this song. I cried.

  • great songwriter, we love this man also in Germany, fantastic !

  • fantastic

  • John Prine just played last last night in Madison Wi. My dad who lives on the streets and plays Prine songs for money got two free tickets for covering his song... Plus John prine signed his guitar and ticket stub... fuckin nuts... so love the illlegal smile You never know who you'll meet.

  • This song brings tears to my eyes ..... so much truth in the words... love it!

  • Omg this song is good not

  • @jblakely23 NOT GOOD! This is probably one of the best written songs ever. Compared to the recent crap by Brittany, Lady GAG GAG it is out of this world.

  • @jblakely23 OMG, what are you. like twelve? Give it a little while, it'll come to ya. maybe

  • Was this filmed in Virginia, Wolftrap?

  • @EGM210 John Prine 2004 Philadelphia Folk Festival

  • somebody recommended this songwriter to me. had never heard of him so I thought I'd check him out. Glad I did!

  • @mooncrow17 I've loved listening to John for almost 40 years. At the risk of getting flamed I'll suggest a look at Billy Joe Shaver........another one of our great song writers. He wrote most of the "Outlaw" songs for Waylon.

  • One of the best songs you have written-LOVE it.!

    Thanks

  • Heard "Inspite of Ourselves" by Prine and Dement; hooked on both of them ever since. I'm dumbfounded as how they could be around for so long and I've never heard of them. It's like you live through renaissance and never knew what it was. O' how they sing directly to my soul. Let's play this again, shan't we?

  • Be well, John, we need you to write, sing and tour for many more decades :)

  • It's sad to admit but if I had not watched My Name is Earl I would not have heard of this GREAT singer.

  • @ethanbrod77 Yeah, but you DID

  • I hate graveyards and old pawnshops.

  • grandpa was a carpenter

  • "It's a Big Old Goofy World"

  • John Prine and Iris Dement - In Spite of Ourselves is a great love song

  • I've been fan of Mr. Prine since the late 70's.Saw him in Victoria B.C. a couple of years back.Got harassed by snobbish high paid help at royal theatre but stood my ground long enough to share a smile with one of personal heroes.I'm a bit of an old rocker but over the last 20 years John has soothed my soul and made me laugh and cry countless times. Souveniors is a song that can do just that. ago.

  • This was truly great. Weird as it is, I've never heard of the guy before. Nice song, and what an amusing voice.

  • I ment amacing voice.

  • this was after he recovered from throat cancer, even more amazing voice :}

  • @rfranklinw1 I agree. For me his voice now is what his songs call for. I bought my first JP album back in the early seventies.

  • It's a happy enchilada and you think your'e gonna drown, that's the way the world goes round'

  • My dad loved John Prine and especially this song. He passed away in Jan. at the young age of 55.He always sang this song and sounded just like John. We played it at his funeral.I know he must have been proud. He loved John. In loving memory of the best daddy in the world.(Gerald Lee Seyer)love Nicole-Daddy's Little Girl!!

  • Your a wonderful daughter. Your dad is very proud of you. God bless.

  • @namdahl same thing here... i was raised on prine by my dad who died when i was young , this song makes me cry everytime. thank you john for shaping my morals my thoughts on love and for singin songs that should embarass the hell out of ya meaning that much..

  • @namdahl god bless and im sure anything you set your mind to you will succeed ten fold

  • @namdahl after i red this i am sure that he must be proud..:) dont worry nicole. beautilfull name btw.

  • @namdahl I hear ya. My uncle (who I was really close with) was a big John Prine fan died last Aug. and John Prine pretty much supplied the soundtrack to the entire service. I already miss hearing him play all those those songs on his guitar. I can't even hear or play a John Prine song anymore without getting choked up.

  • @namdahl Thank you for sharing that.

  • Thanks John, There are still a few of us who need the real deal. You are it.

  • Steve Goodman is where I go when I am happy and where I go when I am sad. John Prine is a fixture in my life.. I am better for knowing his music. It has gotten me through tough times and good times.

  • to hell with "THEM" any who

  • I love this song. Johns voice gives me chills. So much character

  • John Prine is the best!!!!!!

  • We've all been robbed of our childhood mentalities. I don't suppose there is anyone to blame except "them"

  • Good singer! 5*****s and thanks for posting.

  • i love john prine he is not just a another muscian, he puts his heart & soul into his music, he is one of the best singer/songwriter & performers that i had the priveledge of seeing in mephis,TN

my husband & i got married to john's song titled "unlonely" it was perfect, my husband told me that song best described how he felt about me after i heard the song i was overwhelmed that a man could love this much, thank you john for the perfect wedding song & thank GOD for a wonderful husband

  • what a cool story. "unlonely" is the J.P. song i introduced my g/f to and thats all it took for her to become a fan. we are getting married in august. you two live happy and healthy!!!!!!!!

  • When I was 21, I started remembering all of those great christmas presents I had gotten... then I realized that I didn't have any of them anymore, worse yet, I couldn't even remember what happened to them at all. It's like they just turned to dust like old corpes in my toybox. When I first heard this thought, it made me re-wonder... where's all that crap go? I always think of this song (and play it) on christmas morning.

  • i love mr prine to

had about 90 different songs by john and people who sang with him but the great days cd's he put out were alsome

  • You left out Guy Clark and Billy Joe Shaver.

Also, check out Ronny Elliott and Frank Thomas, a couple Florida guys.

  • @cornholewithpoop they were pretty good too

  • This guy is good and this is my fav

  • great song!

  • An American icon...we love you

  • John had cancer surgery that changed his voice but he is still the greatest to me and I love him

  • john prine, you are one wise man and i need to say that you and bob dylan are equally influental to me along with tom waites for writing songs...love you man

  • awesome.

  • some shite

  • I'm going to see him next week! Only took me 25 years...

John Prine, you are the best there is! What a great heart and talent.

  • For what reason?

  • Take that somewhere else. We are just trying to enjoy some music. Your Probably a Non American, with some criminal activity. Shame on You for involving your daughter. Can I help you move funds from Nigeria???????? Fkr.

  • I saw Steve Goodman open for John in Missoula, Montana just a couple years before Steve died. They had something magical going on! Give me that rough edge on Prine's voice over any sugar coated, silver throated pop singer any day! There will be some Prine and Goodman tunes at my funeral some day!

  • John writes about all human emotion--that's one thing that makes his songs so real. His songs can be sung at funerals and birhtdays--it's amazing!

  • He started as a mailman in Chicago and started to write and sing songs.

  • I love Prine. I grew up listening to him. My cousin Jeff introduced me to Prine when I was around 3 or 4. He died when I was little and Prine makes me think of him.

  • Beautiful song.

  • What a genius.

  • Nobody does it like Johnny

  • I have loved this song, and the connection between John and Steve Goodman since I first heard it. The most poignant song- sad, but wonderful.

And God rest your soul, Steve Goodman.

  • My Dad asked us to play this at his funeral. He died in 2003. I miss him SOO much!

  • youngjme Did you play the song or a recording of it? I wonder what to ask for when I die. LONG ago, my best friend said she'd want us to hold a party in if she passed away, & 3 weeks later, she was killed by a serial killer, just shy of turning 21 years old. I think funerals really are for those left behind, not the dead, but there should be a way to honor the loss of them in our lives. Bet your Dad is standing behind you right now, but you can't feel him b/c of your grief. You are loved.

  • Oh I know he is :-) Yes, I believe its more for those left behind. But those are the songs that make us think of him. We made a cd to play at his funeral. thanks for commenting

  • So sorry for your loss. I have always said funerals are for the living not the dead. My sister always said she wanted us to tell jokes at her funeral but nobody could bring themselves to do that.

  • my favorite john p. song. bring tears to eyes. i have many souveniers that i have missed placed and lost over the years. this song brings those lost items of endearment back to me.

  • This song grows more beautiful every time I hear it. I listen to it like a souvenir meant to be cherished.

  • I can remember picking the needle up off the old vinyl and lowering it back down on this song over and over. The album had Steve Goodman backing on guitar and yes, he did sound good.

Had the good fortune to see John headline and Steve open for him at the Santa Monica Civic auditorium mid 70's. After a rousing Steve Goodman guitar picking exhibition someone shouted, "Get loose Steve." To which Steve replied, "If I was any looser I'd pee my pants."

  • he's the best!!!!!!

  • Great working class guy sound, great lyrics and guitar.. where in america does he come from???

  • Was born in Chicago.

  • Prine was born October 10, 1946, in Maywood, Ill., to William Mason Prine and Verna Valentine Hamm, who had moved from Kentucky to get away from the mining life. Prine grew up in a music-loving family steeped in rich country tradition and blue-collar pragmatism. He learned guitar as a young teen from his grandfather and brother, and quickly began writing songs and setting them to music.

  • Maywood, IL.

    He's the best, eh?

  • Maywood, IL.

    He's the best, eh?

  • I've loved his music since I first heard the album " Prime Prine" better than 20 years ago

  • And I don't know how..... they slipped away from me.....?

  • I've listened to John Prine since.... well since the early seventies. Caught him in concert at a small venue and can still hear Saddle In The Rain in my head. His lyrics were a lighthouse to a confused generation. He just made sense of a diffcult time. My two favorite songs are, Thats the Way the World Goes Around, and now that I'm older Hellow In There is timeless. Thanks John.

  • I agree. He's brilliant.

  • I had the opportunity of hearing one of his albels in the early 70's and I've been listning to him ever since.

  • John Prine's lyrics are crisp and clear..... and relay a precise feeling... That's 78-83% of the reason he's my favorite.

  • this is my favorite john prine song - the guitar line in it is just so perfect. but i'll be damned if i know how he's playing it...i've just began to learn it though.

  • John Prine!!! I saw him Live in the mid 80's in Houston on my Birthday. I will never forget the clarity and heart that he projected and still does. We are blessed with the truth that he tells.

  • Anyone got John singing 'Quit Hollerin at me' and can post it. Would appreciate.

  • I've never heard of John Prine until today. I like his style of playing.

  • welcome to the club... but I have to warn you... your life will never be the same..

  • Saw JP's show in Memphis,March 7,great show,JP sang this, and sounded better than he does here,my 4th time seeing him live, been listening to him 4 over 30 years, an American treasure! plus met him after the show, cool dude, not full of himself and into himself like a like a lot of celebs r.We love ya John.

  • The only two song writers on the planet who currently matter: PRINE AND DYLAN. And you couldn't separate them with a credit card.

  • dylan doesn't have half the talent of John Prine

  • I first saw John in the late eighties in Southern California. I didn't know one of his songs, and yet I he had me hanging on to every word he sang. Today I'm hooked, desperately trying to mimic his picking. I think I know every prine song today. LOL

  • well i l love john prine as well and was raised on him, but if you like him, you'll love steve godman, b/c steve wrote about 70% of his songs, but john sings them pritty damn good

  • Do you have John singing 'Quit Hollerin at me' - can you post it? Would be good to see/hear
