@Emprizr Even though the minor pentatonic scale is used a lot in blues, its used a lot in metal. You can hear it in solos by classic metal bands like Maiden, Metallica, and Megadeth. I've even heard Trey Azagthoth from Morbid Angel use some pentatonic licks. It has a wide amount of applications if you know how to use it.

@FenderStratShredder It's really simple. Think about it; there are harmonic markers on the 3rd fret, 5th, 7th, 12th, 15th, 17th, 19th, 21st, and 24th if you have a 24 fret. That must mean they mean something special, right? Just take one, like 5, and add it to that scale. Move that scale up 5 frets at one point in it, like on the d string for example. Just kinda mess around there when your practicin someday, then come back to the normal position.

ok yes the chromatic scale is basically every note, but you can't just play every note over every chord, you will generally need to be in the same key as the music you're playing over (!)

the key you're playing in is determined by the 'root note', and then the minor pentatonic is the root, minor 3rd, 4th, 5th and 7th 'degrees of the scale'

its very simple really, but you will need to look this stuff up yourself, if you actively try and make sense of this stuff you'll progress far far faster

@araknoth the root is basically decided by what chord you're playing over, the chords in a progression will mostly fit in a particular key, if you look at a scale, when you say the 3rd or the 5th, you're talking about the number of notes from the root note, within the particular scale, as you shift the pattern 1,3,5 pattern along the scale, you find that some have a full two tones between the 1st(root) and the 3rd this is a major 3rd, while some will have a tone and a half(a minor 3rd)

@Rrrrobbo you will also find thats not until you reach the 7th chord in the scale that you have a tone and half difference between all the notes, giving you a minor third and a diminished fifth which basically means it is a semitone lower, like a minor third, you could wrongly think of it as like a minor fifth but it doesn't have the effect on the sound that the third does, so its not minor, its diminished, this set of chords are the chords that fit in a particular key, sorry ive gone off on one

the patterms are the same yes, also this may help you understand a little better, search "Pentatonic scale positions" on google and you will see the extended Pentatonic scale (if you want to learn all of it take it slow) now... you can move the basic shape on another fret like to the 8th fret, and move the whole extended pattern along with it to play it in another key, same goes for dropped tunings, you're basicly just playing in a different key. hope that helps
