@Xaahu Those are all operating systems that use the Linux kernel. There's no operating system called "Linux", because it's not an operating system- it's a kernel.
@Xaahu There is no "linux" operating system. Ubuntu, Debian, Mint are Software distributions that Include Linux, and use it as the Kernel [Debian can run on FreeBSD's Kernel, even on the GNU Mach(With the help of Hurd, of course)]. The operating system is called GNU. It runs on top of a kernel, called Linux, but can run on other kernels too, and additional software is provided by the Distribution maintainers, or by your self. (BTW, i AM a GNU user :D)
@merkur32123 Don't be a GNUazi douche. There are far more userspace components in Linux beyond GNU. Linux isn't a GNU project, X.org isn't a GNU project, Gnome isn't a GNU project, KDE isn't a GNU project, Apache isn't a GNU project. I could go on all day, but you should get the point by now. One could just as easily port BSD's libc et al, to Linux. The OS doesn't belong to GNU, GNU is only a small portion the software, and Linus rejected any such generic naming convention.
@aidanjt As i said: "and additional software is provided by the Distribution maintainers, or by your self.", this includes X, KDE, Etc. And i never said Linux is a GNU project, i said GNU runs on it, and makes it usable. If you remove X from a Linux Computer, it works, so we won't call it X/Linux, but if you remove everything of GNU, you get an unusable system. And yes, you can port BSD stuff to Linux, but no one has done that. (BTW, Gnome is a GNU project iirc.)
@merkur32123 Nonsense, there's plenty of non-GNU userspace available for Linux nowadays, I used BSD's libc as an example of pre-GNU userspace Linus could have used back in the day. The GNU components are entirely swapable.
And no, GNOME isn't a GNU project, it's a GNOME Foundation project. Actually now that I think about it, even Glibc isn't a GNU developed project anymore, that's Red Hat/Ulrich Drepper's pet now.
@aidanjt Again, you didn't get what i was trying to say. I never said: "Linux is just a kernel, and GNU is everything else", i just said Linux it self is Obsolete, and it needs some utilities, that are packed in every Distribution, called GNU, and also a bunch of other. I simplified it by calling GNU a Operating system (Even if they now have a working Pure-GNU OS, called HURD, that runs on the GNU Mach, and is jet very unstable). Other apps are there depending on the Distribution.
@merkur32123@merkur32123 What you did was try to correct someone using the generic OS reference 'Linux' in a valid manner and instead giving all the glory to GNU. If someone doesn't specify a specific distribution, that doesn't automatically give GNU the title of globular placeholder.
@Laoch111 OS X and Windows have a reason. OS X is for the idiots which can barely turn on their computer and Windows is for Gamers and people stupid as hell.
Is there a text only version of this somewhere for those of us who don't watch video or listen to sounds? It would be really nice to see this in text instead.

I've also been interested in other versions of Linux, Ubuntu is great but I'm interested in broadening my Linux-experience. Does anyone have suggestions?
@Thrashler try Arch Linux, it's an awesome distro which you can make whatever you want it to be. You can install any shell you want there. Arch may seem complex at first but actually it really is simple and with the ArchWiki documentation anyone can use it. You will also understand how most things work in Linux. As for shells I suggest KDE if you haven't tried it already and E17 seems really nice, even though it's still not a stable release.

@kjeksomanen I'm not saying it's successful. I'm saying it's successful for non-technical reasons. FreeBSD is more stable and reliable. NetBSD is more configurable. They both have better licensing terms. And UNIXes in general have are very mediocre designs because they're written in C. They get the job done, but it'd be nice to have a better alternative.
@WSWarthog What do you mean? I think about them a lot. They're the OS design I know most intimately. The UNIX security model, in particular, is really bad. I don't really know of any good OSes though. I don't use windows, so I don't really know if it's any better, but I'm not holding my breath. And although there aren't really any good OSes, they haven't really made any effort to fix the problems in UNIX. Shitty UNIX security is why we have jackasses like lulzsec.
If you truly believe that there aren't really any good operating systems, saying that one of them is bad is meaningless because good and bad are of-course relative terms. If everything is bad then nothing is (this might be a bit sophistical but I hope you can see my point).
@WSWarthog I don't believe that's necessarily the case. There is good security and there is bad security. UNIXes security is definitely bad. "Better than the rest" is not a synonym for "good."
@WSWarthog Yeah, I use linux because I need to get practical work done. Problems with unix security aren't too big an issue yet for my desktop use because linux isn't too widely used. If desktop linux use increases, that'll be a bigger worry. Server side unix security is a problem. I work around the problems because I have to, but better security would be a godsend.
Nah, okay... Seriously now, it's fantastic! Linux literally takes carries on the fine community, culture and knowledge that has been accumulated by *Nices under the past several decades.
Still some things could be better along userland applications, but at least there is stable, sound and proof ground for applications to stand upon.
I think that I've only had like 3 crashes with Linux, ever. With other systems one has not been quite that lucky.
And how funny it now sounds that Linus got lots of critic choosing monolithic architecture for Linux operating system, instead a Server-Client architecture like what HURD and Minix are :D
Linux is live and owns the world technology side (not desktops because Microsoft dominant position ruling pre-installs of PC's) and allows technology to evolve even faster when people can download whole operating system from kernel.org to study how it works and even improve it.
"Hello everybody out there using minix. I'm doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones." So true =))
This video is very cool !! I LOVE IT and really Linux is such a good operating system for computers and phones , Android use Linux Core and also they made MAEMO .
runs on most hardware, for most users software is free, 1000s of coders, testers, debuggers who work for love not money, runs the internet, and like the human race comes in all shapes and sizes, and yet people insist on paying for a piece of software that is full of security holes, has been coded, tested and debugged under duress, and like the hand that owns it comes with the insistence that you bend over and take it up the arse while it fleeces you for more cash.
@Angelscarpwns Unless Linux makes some major strategy changes, it will remain obscure. Linux right now is more a potential than a reality. In b4 legions of rabid linux fanboys.
I think it's funny that the thing binding people to Window is drivers. That's a thin thread to keep a customer on. Happy with linux and happy it's going to be around for a looooong time. :D My income depends on linux.
if I could play steam games on linux i would format my pc right now and install a linux. my pc is totally for games, so using a linux doesnt make sense
@epicnidhogg Often but not always. Some games have been reported to run better in wine than in native windows, particularly legacy games. Many games you can't even tell the difference.
Once I use Linux, I am hooked. Though I still use Windows, I love Linux for its easier maintenance, numerous customization, ability to install to anything you want such as external hard drive etc.
@Angelscarpwns for most end users it is hard to live with linux because many companies still don't support it. Because it's cheaper to just support windows which has 90% market share on desktop. And I think the european commission and others should really do something about this.
@Isamu715 oh right, but still unexperienced assholes might stick this into their command line (without hash) and doesn't work, then try sudo and fuck their pcs.
@corgrath it's not mandatory, it all depends on the license that the software is currently under... zlib license for instance doesn't even make you tell people you've used their software... you need to read... idiot.
@TheMetaPhaze We are not discussion the zlib license or any other licenses, than the one actually mentioned in the video; the GPL license (1:20). Don't call me an idiot or tell me to learn to read, when you are clearly not following this video at all, but just looking for a way to argue in a youtube video's comments. And yes, your name suits you.
Clearly man, clearly, i don't understand the video, clearly you are god and know everything, clearly.
You should not spread misleading information. I can see however that your English is very very poor and that you probably don't understand what you are saying anyway... and you obviously don't understand my nick. I don't argue, i debate to let the truth stand forward... I'll call you what ever I want to call you... especially an idiot when it comes to grammar... We are not discussion.
@TheMetaPhaze Err, who are you? And why are you bashing and calling me an idiot, due to my "English grammar"? When and where? And why are you writing all this in a YouTube video comments instead of just sending private messages.
Comments here should be related to the video, not for any insulting, trolling, flame war, or what ever your agenda is.
I liked the video, but a small critique would not to fall into the "LOC-graph trap". Quality not quantity is something that most people accept as a given in this age of unstructured data and the need to "solutionize" people's problems. The easy, high-quality way of doing things has always been the most enticing in open source development, but LOC-graphs threaten to be the next "clicks" (of the web-bust era).
it should have been specified that along with the freedoms the GPL licence compels those who use it to share the code, that's not a freedom, but it is a very important part of the licence.
I feel special after watching this video

Once I use Linux, I am hooked. Though I still use Windows, I love Linux for its easier maintenance, numerous customization, ability to install to anything you want such as external hard drive etc.
Congratulations, Linux. Congratulations, Linus.

@Angelscarpwns for most end users it is hard to live with linux because many companies still don't support it. Because it's cheaper to just support windows which has 90% market share on desktop. And I think the european commission and others should really do something about this.
bv90andy 6 months ago
Nope, the ATM I use is using windows. How do I know that? More often then not it has a big fat "send" or don't send". And sometimes a blue screen.

rinkavideos64 4 months ago
@rinkavideos64 he's already running it as root as there is a hash(#) at the beginning if the command :D
Isamu715 4 months ago
@Isamu715 oh right, but still unexperienced assholes might stick this into their command line (without hash) and doesn't work, then try sudo and fuck their pcs.

YEA I installed Linux on its 20th anniversary (Fedora 15+GNOME3, nothing is better)

Its not a "freedom" to share the changes you make, its mandatory! (if you distribute the software)
corgrath 7 months ago
@corgrath it's not mandatory, it all depends on the license that the software is currently under... zlib license for instance doesn't even make you tell people you've used their software... you need to read... idiot.
TheMetaPhaze 6 months ago
@TheMetaPhaze We are not discussion the zlib license or any other licenses, than the one actually mentioned in the video; the GPL license (1:20). Don't call me an idiot or tell me to learn to read, when you are clearly not following this video at all, but just looking for a way to argue in a youtube video's comments. And yes, your name suits you.
corgrath 6 months ago
@corgrath
clearly man, clearly... you know everything.
TheMetaPhaze 3 months ago
@corgrath
TheMetaPhaze 3 months ago
@TheMetaPhaze Err, who are you? And why are you bashing and calling me an idiot, due to my "English grammar"? When and where? And why are you writing all this in a YouTube video comments instead of just sending private messages.
Comments here should be related to the video, not for any insulting, trolling, flame war, or what ever your agenda is.

why is atheist Stallman so often portrayed as a person from mosaic mythology?
dulcetAirman 7 months ago
I liked the video, but a small critique would not to fall into the "LOC-graph trap". Quality not quantity is something that most people accept as a given in this age of unstructured data and the need to "solutionize" people's problems. The easy, high-quality way of doing things has always been the most enticing in open source development, but LOC-graphs threaten to be the next "clicks" (of the web-bust era).

electrictroy2010 7 months ago
it should have been specified that along with the freedoms the GPL licence compels those who use it to share the code, that's not a freedom, but it is a very important part of the licence.
