Maybe it's just me but I love how the two times music is used in game you're on a horse and the tone of the music affects your actions. Here the tone is soft so you ride your horse slowly, taking in the breathtaking views of Mexico, whereas later on when Compass starts it's a much harder tone so you ride your horse as quick as you can back home. The same thing in Undead Nightmare and Bad Voodoo, well done Rockstar
One of the most emotionally charged moments in gaming. An almost spiritual experience. The atmosphere was so heavy that I could really feel how wild and fresh and breathtakingly beautiful this land was. And it wasn't even a cutscene. The player was just riding to some music. But the whole way it happened was just...just masterful. It was a work of art.
@sugar833 This isnt a cut scene, when you are first riding into mexico it is a long and gruelling task, so this music fits the moment at the perfect time
@sugar833 the song plays if you get on the horse thats in front of after you finish the mission to get to mexico, if you call your actual horse the song wont play.
Personally: rockstar have the best games ever; they all have huge maps with free-roam and also a huge amount of side quests and secrets in the game. I always look forward to every new Rockstar game coming out
I think this moment shows that more games need to use songs in certain set pieces. It's normal to have background music but sometimes an actual song with lyrics has such a different and amazing effect.
Nothing compares than what I did, or what happened to me when I hit this level. It was at night, and the full moon was out. One of the best emotional transitions ever created.
@chickensesame i was thinking the same thing, but you have to realize the game revolves around seeing the map, and there isn't really a good toggle on/off system in use these days. perhaps pressing the down arrow on the d-pad in later rockstar games will do such.
This was the first time in a long time that something in a video game compelled me to tears. This literally was the most incredible thing that I've ever seen in a video game. The atmosphere was just wonderful. It literally is the best moment in the game. Rockstar...Jose Gonzalez....thank you for giving the world this. Seriously.
The song won't play if you get off your horse at the beginning. I bet a lot of people missed this because they felt compelled to loot the last 2 guys you kill just before getting off the raft. Also, the song ends if you dismount or get into a gun fight at any point I believe. You can open a map and set a way point to LR and if you ride at full gallop for most of the way you'll reach the destination just as the song ends.
@chrispellis yea, i got off that horse to ride my horse, it turned off, i was really bumed out cause my dad and bro got to ride through mexico withthat song, so i think im just gunna replay it so i can hear it whail im riding through mexico... cause i think its quite unfair... :(
@chrispellis A cougar snatched me off my horse the first time this played. I came to youtube to listen to the song and the comments spoiled the ending for me. It was a real shit day.
I was so lucky. I came into Mexico in the middle of night. My path and all the land around me was lit by moonlight. I just kept riding. It was incredible.
When I got this the first time it was twilight. The sky was partially overcast and it had just started to rain. The sun was still setting on one side of the sky, while black clouds and lightning were behind me. As I rode the storm got worse, but only enough to frame the sunset in weird blue clouds.
After the song, I paused the game and went and bought a pack of Red Man tobacco, which I've never used before. Hells yeah.
Oh man I'm missing so much!!! I love Great Rockstar games and this one having Jose Gonzalez and Jimie Liddell on their soundtrack!!! I just found out today and been hearing this song for the past week
i agree with you guys. this is one of the most epic moment in a videogame ever. the calm feeling of victory and grandeur i felt after all the us missions got finally realeased in this slow and long ride to mexico. and when the music faded in i nearly cried. never felt like this before with a videogame or a movie or anything. the best narration experience ever.
It's honestly better in the context of the story leading up to it, serving as a landmark in your journey as much as slogging your guts out in a marathon and spending what you thought were your last reserves to cross a finish line that turned out to be just the first checkpoint of many. The rest of the course looms in front of you like Atlas' footprints for you to follow alone... alone in every possible way. But, like Atlas, you can't put your burden down, so you move forward.
@D3f11 I don't know about the PS3, but on the 360 if you tap A til you're at the pace you want, (trot/canter/gallop) all you have to do from that point is hold the button down and not re-tap it.
This game is so epic and grand. I love this scene in the game. It happens as soon as you get to Mexico after a long shoot out drifting by he river. Amazing song really matches the mood of the scene. I think I had goose bumps on my arms when I first heard this song.
the atmosphere is magical. me, my horse, the new landscape and this song, which came totally unexpected. i sat in front of the game and was taken. i could continue riding for hours.
This bit was legendary. I did this part when it was night and was amazed at how atmospheric it was. Nice vid man. For anyone who is interested, the song is called: 'Far Away' by Jose Gonzalez. You can download it on iTunes.
